Jalur Gemilang: A Symbol Of Malaysians' Unity And National Pride

Barnama9 hours ago
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Flying the Jalur Gemilang is more than raising a flag; it embodies Malaysia's soul and spirit, etched in the hearts of every citizen.
Information Department (JAPEN) Community Relations and Development Division deputy director Hazlianayati Sudin @ Subdin said the Jalur Gemilang, flying proudly in the sky, symbolises the unity of Malaysians across different backgrounds, religions and walks of life.
She therefore urged all citizens to take part in the Satu Rumah, Satu Jalur Gemilang initiative to foster patriotism ahead of this year's National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations.
'Imagine if every house in Malaysia, from remote villages to high-rise apartments in Kuala Lumpur, flew the flag; the sight of a sea of red, white, blue and yellow would surely fill us all with pride.
'This effort is not just about decorating homes but about sincerely instilling a love for the country in the heart, not out of compulsion,' she said at a media briefing today on the procedures for the publication and display of the Jalur Gemilang in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day 2025 here today.
Hazlianayati said the Jalur Gemilang also symbolises the nation's sovereignty, freedom and prosperity and should be proudly flown by all citizens.
She added that the Satu Rumah, Satu Jalur Gemilang initiative, first introduced by JAPEN on May 19, 2024, has been expanded to seven clusters this year to foster patriotism and love for the country among the people.
She said the seven clusters were education, security, health, government agencies, higher education, community and industry.
'It is hoped that this initiative will encourage widespread display of the Jalur Gemilang across homes, government buildings, businesses and public vehicles in celebration of National Day and Malaysia Day,' said Hazlianayati.

Doing it right: Liew, putting up the Jalur Gemilang at the family's business at India Street, Kuching. — ZULAZHAR SHEBLEE/The Star KUCHING: For Bernard Liew, displaying the Jalur Gemilang as part of National Day celebrations is an act of patriotism. 'It's all about the Merdeka spirit. We're proud to be Malaysians. 'We're also proud to be Sarawakians who live together in harmony and mutual respect,' he said. Liew was putting up a new flag to replace an older one at his family's business premises at India Street here. It's their practice every year to put up the Jalur Gemilang alongside the Sarawak state flag for National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations. Liew, 38, said it was important to put up the flag correctly but added that mistakes should not become a controversy. He said that Merdeka month was a time for celebrating together, not politicising unintentional mistakes. 'If I happen to see a flag that is displayed wrongly, I will remind the person to put it up the correct way. 'There's no need to turn it into something controversial,' he said. Liew added that the Jalur Gemilang's star and crescent should be at the top when putting up the flag. 'The flag should have 14 stripes and the star has 14 points,' he said.

Pride on display: Chng hanging multiple Jalur Gemilang near his stall in George Town, Penang. — CHAN BOON KAI/The Star Vendors and residents highlight their patriotic values with Jalur Gemilang GEORGE TOWN: The Jalur Gemilang flies proudly across markets, neighbourhoods and homes as Malaysians gear up for their 68th National Day. At the bustling Lebuh Cecil Market, drinks seller Chng Beng Chye has built tall illuminated poles around his stall, adorned with over a dozen mini Jalur Gemilang flags. 'Each year, I decorate my stall with flags and light the poles in red and blue LED strips to match the flag colours when National Day approaches. 'It lifts the patriotic spirit among locals and shows tourists how we honour our country,' said the 70-year-old when met at the stall yesterday. While acknowledging recent controversies over flags being wrongly displayed, Chng urged Malaysians to look past them. 'I believe no one born and raised in this country would purposely disrespect the flag. 'If we all come together for the love of the country, we can move forward to greater heights,' said Chng, who has been trading there since the 1990s. Just a few stalls away, Lim Siew Eng, 90, has her pastry stall crowned with a neat row of Jalur Gemilang flags that flutter in the breeze all year round. The national flag, she said, holds deep meaning because she lived through the hard times before independence and has seen how far the country has come. 'By decorating my stall, visitors know they are in Malaysia and we are proud Malaysians. 'I was born here, even without much education, I can speak Bahasa Malaysia because it is my national language. 'We should celebrate National Day as one nation,' she said. The patriotic fervour is also spreading through residential areas, with Pangsapuri Pelangi's Kawasan Rukun Tetangga putting up about 60 flags around the neighbourhood. The place is home to some 5,000 residents. Its chairman, K. Muniandy, 59, said as a multiracial community, no one is left out when it comes to celebrating National Day. 'Surrounded by the Jalur Gemilang, we are reminded of our independence and the harmony we enjoy today,' he said. At Sri Saujana Flats, joint management committee chairman Yeoh Kean Huat, 54, said six flags now greet residents. 'Last year, we had over 100 flags strung down the blocks. 'Although fewer this year, the spirit remains, and we urge residents to respect the flag and play their role in upholding it,' he said. Malaysia will celebrate its 68th National Day with the main parade in Putrajaya on Aug 31, followed by Malaysia Day celebration at PICCA@Arena Butterworth in Penang on Sept 16.
