Operation Abhyasa simulates bomb blast, boat attack, fire outbreak at KRS dam
MYSURU: Tourists who had gathered to enjoy the serene beauty of Brindavan Gardens at the KRS dam were left stunned on Sunday as loud sirens, smoke and scenes of chaos unfolded around them. Many were unsure whether they were witnessing a real-life terror attack or a film shoot — only to later realise that it was a high-intensity mock drill conducted by the Mandya district administration as per the Home Ministry's directions.
The drill -- Operation Abhyasa -- was aimed at testing the preparedness and coordination of various departments in case of a potential terrorist attack.
The exercise, which unfolded in three phases, involved police, fire personnel, health officials, NCC cadets and representatives from several other departments.
The first scenario simulated a drowning incident during an attack at the boating point of Brindavan Gardens. As soon as the 'accident' was reported to the control room, alerts were sent out to various departments. Fire and rescue teams rushed in with boats and life-saving equipment, rescuing the 'victims' from the water.
Police personnel ensured the crowd was controlled and ambulances had free access. Medical teams, including doctors and nurses, were quick to administer first aid on-site and shifted the severely injured to nearby hospitals.
The second phase depicted a major fire breakout at the police guest house next to Hotel Mayura Cauvery run by KSTDC. The final drill was centered around a bomb blast scenario inside the garden.
In the final phase, a 10 minute black-out was observed. Deputy Commissioner Dr Kumara, Zilla Panchayat CEO KR Nandini, and SP Mallikarjuna Baladandi were present to oversee the operations.

Create awareness against drug, alcohol abuse: DC
Mandya: As part of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, Mandya deputy commissioner Kumara instructed officials to organise awareness programmes on the harmful effects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco across the district. During a district-level meeting of Narco coordination centre committee at the DC's office on Friday, Kumara emphasised the need to raise awareness at district, taluk, and gram panchayat levels. He said the use of drugs is increasing in engineering and medical colleges and asked officials to closely monitor drug trafficking in and around schools and colleges. Kumara also highlighted the possibility of illegal drug cultivation in forest areas and instructed forest department officials to investigate any suspicious activity and take strict action if any such cultivation or trafficking is found. Since certain crops may be grown alongside narcotic plants, the horticulture department was told to stay vigilant and to create awareness among farmers about the dangers of cultivating such substances. Referring to the recent seizure of 12kg of ganja in Srirangapatna taluk, he instructed the police department to conduct a thorough investigation and take strict action against those promoting such criminal activities. Superintendent of police Mallikarjun Baladandi stressed the importance of spreading awareness about the ill effects of drug, alcohol, and tobacco use in every school and college. He asked the education department to mandatorily organise awareness programmes highlighting the harmful effects of smoking and tobacco consumption. Dr K Mohan, district health and family welfare officer, Cheluvayya; deputy director of pre-university education, and Shivaramegowda, deputy director of public instruction, were also present. Gangster Goldy Brar Was Asked Why He Killed Sidhu Moose Wala. His Response
New Delhi: On a late May afternoon in 2022, Sidhu Moose Wala, the popular Punjabi musician, was driving his black Mahindra Thar SUV near his native village in Punjab's Mansa district when two vehicles began to tail him. Within minutes, one of the vehicles cut sharply across the road and blocked Mr Moose Wala's path. Moments later, gunfire erupted. His SUV was peppered with over 100 bullets. More than two years after the murder, the main accused in the killing, Satinderjit Singh or Goldy Brar as he is better known, in an exclusive interview with the BBC, spoke about why he and his associates killed Mr Moose Wala. "In his arrogance, he [Moose Wala] made some mistakes that could not be forgiven," Brar told the BBC. "We had no option but to kill him. He had to face the consequences of his actions. It was either him or us. As simple as that." Goldy Brar, a native of Punjab's Sri Muktsar Sahib, is a close aide of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Operating from Canada, Brar is officially designated a terrorist under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against him and there is an outstanding non-bailable warrant for his arrest. The Home Ministry in a notification had said that Brar is part of a network involved in the smuggling of high-grade weapons and explosives across the India-Pakistan border via drones. The ministry stated Brar's association with the banned group Babbar Khalsa International and accuses him of conspiring to disrupt peace and law and order in Punjab through targeted killings, recruitment of terror modules, and other anti-national activities. Brar continues to operate his criminal enterprise from North America, "Lawrence [Bishnoi] was in touch with Sidhu [Moose Wala]. I don't know who introduced them, and I never asked. But they did speak," Brar told the BBC. "Sidhu used to send 'good morning' and 'good night' messages in an effort to flatter Lawrence." Brar claimed that the tension began over a kabaddi tournament in Punjab. "That's a village our rivals come from. He was promoting our rivals. That's when Lawrence and others were upset with him. They threatened Sidhu and said they wouldn't spare him," Brar claimed. According to the BBC report, tensions were defused through the intervention of Vicky Middukhera, an associate of Bishnoi's and an intermediary. But Middukhera was gunned down in Mohali in August 2021. "Everyone knew Sidhu's role, the police investigating knew, even the journalists who were investigating knew," Brar said. "Sidhu mixed with politicians and people in power. He was using political power, money, and his resources to help our rivals. We wanted him to face punishment for what he'd done. He should have been booked. He should have been jailed. But nobody listened to our plea. So we took it upon ourselves. When decency falls on deaf ears, it's the gunshot that gets heard." When pressed Brar on whether this constituted justice or vigilantism, he was dismissive of India's legal system. "Law. Justice. There's no such thing," Brar told the BBC. "Only the powerful can... [obtain] justice, not ordinary people like us. I did what I had to do for my brother. I have no remorse whatsoever."

Officials to get notices for failing to prevent child marriage: Mandya DC
Mandya: In a stern response to the rising number of child marriage cases, Mandya deputy commissioner Kumara announced that notices will be issued to officials who failed to prevent such incidents. During the 2024-25 fiscal year, the district recorded 57 cases of child marriage, all of which led to FIRs being registered. In the last five years, the district reported 729 child marriage cases, among which 431 were prevented and 298 of them got married. Kumara emphasised the responsibility of grassroots officials—including anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, panchayat development officers (PDOs), and school principals—in detecting and preventing child marriages. "It is hard to believe that these officials are unaware of weddings taking place in their villages," he said. He added that the prolonged absence of high school girls should raise immediate red flags and be thoroughly investigated. Mandya currently ranks sixth in the state for child marriage cases. Despite an annual child welfare budget of Rs 2.3 lakh, the persistence of such incidents points to a failure in planning and intervention, the IAS officer said. Kumara suggested conducting a comprehensive social study of child marriages over the past five years to identify the underlying causes. A majority of the victims in these recent cases were girl students attending govt schools. He directed child development project officers (CDPOs) to coordinate closely with education department officials to monitor school attendance and act promptly on any unusual dropout, particularly among adolescent girls. He also called for anganwadi workers to engage more actively with their communities and play a proactive role in identifying at-risk families. To strengthen grassroots awareness, he recommended organising regular sensitisation programmes during children's village meetings. In 2024-25, among 186 child marriage cases that were reported, 129 of them were prevented, while 57 of them got married, and FIRs have been filed against them. In the last five years in Mandya district, that is, from 2020-21 to 2024-25, 729 cases of child marriage were reported; 431 of them were prevented, while 298 of them got married, and an equal number of FIRs have been filed.
