‘It's been an absolute blast': Northern Ireland's record goal scorer announces retirement
Furness capped off her international career with a starring role by helping Northern Ireland not only qualify for their first major tournament at Euro 2022 but play all three games at the tournament.
At club level, the midfielder is best known for her two spells with Newcastle United, with whom she ended her club career this season, as well as also featuring for Sunderland, Reading, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Bristol City and Icelandic side Grindavík.
"I've had 20 fantastic years. Coming in as a 16-year-old to now, it's been an absolute blast. The progress I've seen, especially over the past couple of years, has been fantastic,' commented Furness.
"Whether I've been in it or out of it, I've been the biggest fan. Everyone has stories and this is part of my chapter. I'm going on to a new chapter now which I'm really excited for.
"I've been in football a long time and I'd like to think over the years I've made a difference, especially with Northern Ireland. That's all I ever wanted; I wanted to make a difference and help pave the way for all you coming through."
Furness scored her first goal for her country in October 2005 against Romania and would go on to represent Northern Ireland for 18 years, playing her final game in a Nations League clash with Hungary in October 2023.
Her crowning moment came when she became the country's leading goal scorer in November 2021, scoring twice against North Macedonia to break the record.
Some of her most important goals came in the qualification process for Euro 2022, though, grabbing five in the group stages before scoring in the Play-Off first-leg against Ukraine, and she would then provide the assist for Julie Nelson's famous header against Norway in the group stages of the main tournament.
Although she didn't feature, she was recalled by Tanya Oxtoby for the recent international window with Poland and Bosnia-Herzegovina, ending her career on the international stage.
On the club scene, the Sunderland-born star made exactly 100 appearances in the Super League, scoring 13 goals, but success followed her around throughout her career.
Furness would win the Premier League Nations Division title with Sunderland in 2011 before helping Liverpool earn promotion to the Super League in 2023 and then do the same with Bristol City a year later, before bringing down the curtain on her playing days at Newcastle United last season.
'Rachel has been the ultimate professional the entire time I have known her, whether she's been in the squad or not. The respect she's shown, and her ability to always put the team first, speaks volumes about her character,' said Northern Ireland manager Tanya Oxtoby.
'She came into the last two camps and gave the squad a real lift to ensure we got the job done — that really speaks to the person she is. I'm so glad we could send her off in style. She has done so much for this country.'

'It's an old principle of teams maybe 15, 20 years ago that they could defend leads and they could be really focussed and concentrated on the defensive side of the game.' But while Neville has confidence in Arsenal's defensive solidity and set-piece nous, he believes there remain 'question marks' over the side's firepower up front. 'They're like a bit of a throwback to an old Italian team at times with the long throws, set-pieces, compact, don't give a lot of space away,' the legendary ex-Manchester United and England right-back continued. 'They've also got the dark arts of the game where the manager is trying to waste time and the players are going down feigning injury. They've got a bit of that going on so they're wise. Liverpool issued Marc Guehi transfer statement as Crystal Palace make feelings clear
Crystal Palace are facing a difficult situation over captain Marc Guehi, who continues to play for the club while in negotiations to join Liverpool in the summer transfer window Liverpool have been told they cannot sign Marc Guehi in the next week after Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner put his foot down over the frustrating situation. Palace played the first leg of their Conference League play-off against Fredrikstad on Thursday night without Eberechi Eze, who is leaving to join Arsenal. Palace beat the Norwegian side 1-0 with Guehi captaining the side, but the late withdrawal of Eze - who is leaving in a £67.5million move to Arsenal in the coming days - caused a distraction. Guehi has played both of Palace's matches this season but remains in talks over a move to Liverpool in the summer transfer window, which closes on September 1. He has entered the final year of his contract with Palace, who are under pressure to sell now or lose him for nothing next summer. It is a frustrating situation for Glasner, who openly expressed his dismay at his squad, after only being able to name nine of the 12 permitted substitutes on Thursday. "We have to, especially for the second leg," Glasner told Channel 5 when asked if Palace would hold onto Guehi. "No injured player will come back and we cannot register anyone so we have to keep him. "We already rested Chris Richards and Ty Mitchell who had small problems. There is no other choice than keeping Marc for these games. He knows it, everybody knows it. If we want to compete in all of these competitions we need players, that is pretty clear." Palace travel to Norway for the second leg of the play-off on Thursday, August 28, which would then leave a three-day window for Guehi to join Liverpool afterwards. Negotiations have reached a stand still, with Palace demanding £45m for their captain, while Liverpool won't go above £35m. "If Marc [Guehi] leaves maybe I will try my boots because I was a centre-back. We have to act. It's Crystal Palace 's future and we need to add numbers," Glasner added. "We are very, very late to find replacements. I think we could behaved much better than we did. It's not the best way to start the season. I think we are below the edge." While Glasner clearly wants to keep his centre-back, Palace chairman Steve Parish has a more realistic approach. He said: 'If Marc wants to sign a new contract then he can stay! It's a difficult situation. Everyone has to sell players to comply with the rules. That's a situation that we will have to look at in the next 11 days.' With Eze not present at Selhurst Park, the attention was on Guehi, who had a cameraman follow him across the pitch as he applauded the fans after the full-time whistle. "There's other players you know,' he said with a smile, pointing over his shoulder. Parish has negotiated the exit of Eze to Arsenal and said: "It is what it is, we've got to move past. He's been fantastic for the club, we all love him for what he's done, what he's achieved and we're pleased he can go on and achieve the other ambitions that he's got. "The King is dead, long live the King, we have to move past it. We have to find other players to bring in that can support the rest of the team and Oliver. "We'll bring in players, it's about finding the right ones. It's difficult to replace players like that. We're probably a little bit thin anyway. We'll try and use the money and make ourselves, maybe not as individually as good, but broader with a stronger base and with a few more options."

Harry Redknapp knows just how Eddie Howe is feeling… he lived the Alexander Isak transfer saga nightmare at Tottenham
YOUR best player is being wooed by a ruthless rival club. He wants a pay rise. He wants big trophies. He claims promises have been broken. 7 7 7 Harry Redknapp has been there and done that with Luka Modric. Now, Alexander Isak is at war with Newcastle as he tries to force a move to champions Liverpool. In the summer of 2011, Modric wanted Chelsea — only to end up staying at Tottenham for another year. Many in the Toon Army will hope the Isak saga has the same ending — but the stars have behaved differently. And Redknapp is not the only one who thinks it is inevitable Isak will end up at Anfield by September 1. But 14 summers ago, it felt certain Modric was off to Stamford Bridge. In his third season, Spurs finished fifth, six points off Champions League qualification. Chelsea, who came second, had just appointed Andre Villas-Boas as boss and sensed an opportunity. Modric wrote: ''Do you think Tottenham will resist your transfer? Are they going to put up a fight?' Abramovich asked. ''I think the negotiations are going to be tough,' I replied because I knew the clubs were not on good terms.' Redknapp, 78, joked: 'I didn't know about the yacht thing at the time. 'I'd have asked if could if I could have a week on it, too!' Modric's fears proved well-founded. Chelsea offered £22million. Spurs supremo Daniel Levy said no. The Blues came back with £27m. No deal. Modric's problem was that he had signed a new six-year contract 12 months earlier. So, like Isak, he went public with his desire to leave. Modric cited Chelsea's ability to compete for the Champions League and Premier League and said he had a 'gentleman's agreement' with Levy that he could leave for a 'big club'. Shades of Isak there, but Modric took a less aggressive approach. The Croatian added: 'I don't want to fight and argue with Tottenham. I want to go in a good way, a friendly way so I can stay friends with them. 'I love them and they love me but that's the way it is and I have to think what is best for my career.' Although Redknapp was disappointed, he could see Modric's point of view. Redknapp said: 'He wasn't earning anywhere near what average players at other clubs were getting. Harry Redknapp on Luka Mordric 7 'He had a chance to play Champions League and double his money. I couldn't sit there and go, 'It's wrong.' 'I loved my time at Portsmouth, but I left and went to Tottenham. That's football.' The tug-of-war over Modric went on through the summer. But Modric was on the plane for Spurs' pre-season trip to South Africa. Unlike Isak, who missed Newcastle's tour of the Far East because of an alleged injury as rumours of Liverpool's intentions grew. Modric remained professional for most of the summer but asked to be left out of the season opener against Manchester United, saying his 'head was not in the right place'. He also requested to miss the next match, at home to Manchester City. But Redknapp persuaded him to play in what turned out to be a 5-1 defeat and what Modric called 'one of my worst performances'. Chelsea made a £40m bid on deadline day, but Levy stood firm. Redknapp said: 'I told Luka I understood, but said, 'Come on, let's have another year, I think we can do something good'.' 'Luka could have easily thrown the toys out the pram and said, 'I'm not playing, I'm not training, I'm injured'. 'But he is an incredible person as well as an incredible player. 'That's probably why he's still at the top level now, at nearly 40.' Redknapp made Modric captain and he had an excellent season for Spurs. He earned their player of the season award despite the previous summer's intrigue. Redknapp's side finished fourth in the Premier League and would normally have qualified for the Champions League. But Chelsea, having ended up sixth after another tumultuous campaign, became European champions for the first time under caretaker boss Roberto di Matteo . . . and so snatched Spurs' place off them by virtue of being the holders. Redknapp left Spurs soon afterwards — and urged Sir Alex Ferguson to buy Modric for Manchester United. He recalled: 'What's funny is that the Chelsea manager who had been ringing Luka all the time, Andre Villas-Boas, ended up replacing me at Tottenham. 7 If he plays and scores a goal, there will be 50,000 Geordies singing his name." Harry Rednkapp on Alexander Isak "Sir Alex spoke to me about Luka and I said, 'Take him, take him, he's fantastic'. But Luka ended up going to Real Madrid. 'And that didn't turn out too bad for him, did it?' Real paid £30m for Modric, £10m below Chelsea's final bid of the previous summer. But Spurs had refused to be bullied by the Blues and got one more season out of their midfield maestro. So, if Isak does not get his move to Liverpool, could he win back his Newcastle team-mates and the fans? Redknapp said: 'If he plays and scores a goal, there will be 50,000 Geordies singing his name. The game has been like that forever. 'As long as you're winning, fans soon forget. That's how stupid it all is, really.'
