Who are Bob Vylan and why are they in the spotlight after their Glastonbury set?

FOOTAGE of punk duo Bob Vylan's Glastonbury Festival performance is being assessed by Avon and Somerset Police to see whether any offences may have been committed.
The duo, made up of Bobby Vylan and Bobbie Vylan, led crowds at the West Holts Stage in a chant of 'death, death to the IDF' as they performed before Irish rap trio Kneecap.
Formed in Ipswich in 2017, both members of Bob Vylan keep their real names secret to maintain their privacy.
The band's musical style is an innovative mix of grime, punk and hard rock, and they have released four albums, Dread (2019), We Live Here (2020), Bob Vylan Presents The Price Of Life (2022), and Humble as the Sun (2024).

They won best alternative music act at the Mobo Awards in 2022, and best album at the Kerrang awards in 2022 for Bob Vylan Presents The Price Of Life.
They have collaborated with Amyl And The Sniffers singer Amy Taylor, Soft Play guitarist Laurie Vincent and rock band Kid Kapichi.
Bob Vylan perform a high energy set of sampled guitar tracks mixed with live drumming from Bobbie, and the band often see their audiences pogoing and moshing, but they make an effort to ensure the crowd acts safely.
The band's songs often speak out against racism, homophobia, toxic masculinity and far right politics, and the track Pretty Songs is often introduced by Bobby saying that 'violence is the only language that some people understand'.
In their early days Bobby would sometimes wield a baseball bat, thrashing it in the direction of the crowd, and carry out other provocative actions such as wearing the football shirt of the rivals of the town or city in which they were playing.
Recently, the band has become less confrontational, and Bobbie regularly performs a drum solo to the late Roy Ayers' chilled out Everybody Loves The Sunshine.
During their Glastonbury set, Bobby brought out his daughter to sing with him on Dream Bigger.
In 2021, the Norwich Evening News reported that one fan was on the end of a tirade from Bobby, after he was hit by an ice cube while performing in an Ipswich Town shirt, and the gig was said to have been halted while the singer ranted.
Bobby is also said to have wielded a baseball bat at the gig, and the news article was headlined 'the frost and the fury'.
Sarah Corbett, from Norwich, who was on the receiving end of the alleged tirade, told the newspaper: 'We were all having fun on the dance floor. I'd put an ice cube down my friend's top for a laugh.
'Another girl then threw it at her friend, but it missed and landed at his feet.
'At that point he stopped the gig and demanded to know who had thrown it.

'Seeing the girl's face drop, I decided to take the flak and announced it was me. He started abusing me through the microphone.
'As I tried to leave, one of his fans tried to grab me by the throat.'
A band spokesperson told the paper after the incident that they 'completely refute any wrongdoing' and that Bobby 'did not want to engage'.

Karen Gillan Joins the New ‘Highlander' and Has the Best Reaction to the News

The cast of the upcoming reimagining of Highlander is just getting better and better. Henry Cavill leads the ensemble that includes Russell Crowe and Dave Bautista, and now we know that Karen Gillan, the genre queen best known for her roles in Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Jumanji franchises, is joining the mix. In a way, it's a film she was born to be in. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Gillan's casting, and she reposted it on X with the comment 'Dialect coach can sit this one out…' Highlander, of course, is largely set in Scotland, Gillan's home country, so there will be no Nebula voice here. Just pure Karen Gillan. Highlander is a sweeping epic across the ages about eternal beings fighting each other until only one remains. We follow Connor MacLeod, played by Henry Cavill, as he learns about his destiny and fights to survive across the centuries. Gillan plays Heather, his mortal first wife. Beatie Edney played the role in the 1986 original, which saw MacLeod marry her after being ousted by his clan. The two live a peaceful life, but MacLeod doesn't age, being a Highlander and all, and Heather eventually dies of old age. It's unclear if the role is the same in this new version, but it's a solid supporting role. In addition to Cavill, Crowe is playing the role of MacLeod's mentor, Ramirez, which was originally played and made famous by Sean Connery. Bautista is the Kurgan, another Highlander who is very proficient at killing other Highlanders and sets his sights on MacLeod. Black Bag star Marisa Abela is also in the film, possibly as a modern scientist who finds herself investigating the events. Written by Michael Finch (John Wick: Chapter 4) and directed by the franchise godfather of John Wick, Chad Stahelski, Highlander starts shooting in September, and we cannot wait. It's a franchise that has lived on the fringes but, with this cast and this team, has the potential to be really special. Want more io9 news? A Painting That Captures London at Dusk

In Solo Show, a new series from T Magazine, we ask Black artists to curate a list of three treasured works that they've encountered or made, and to reflect on how their practice connects to a broader art lineage. In 2020, the figurative painter Cece Philips, 29, left her career in advertising to pursue art full-time. She moved back into her parents' home in West London, and soon became known for her large-scale oil paintings of interior scenes at nightfall, often using a vibrant palette to depict women in or around strategically lit windows, doors and rooms. Here, she discusses two of the artworks that have most influenced her practice, and one of her own, which continues her exploration of spectatorship and voyeurism and will soon be on view in the three-person exhibition 'Interior Motives' at Hauser & Wirth in London. The first work that inspired her Barkley Hendricks has had a big influence on me stylistically. I love the way he paints — it's smooth and buttery. I first encountered his work when this piece was exhibited as part of the Tate Modern's 2017 show 'Soul of a Nation' [which explored the contributions of African American artists during and after the Civil Rights movement]. At that time, I was studying history at the University of Bristol, and we were doing a unit on 1960s America. Much like the exhibition, [the course] had a lot of difficult imagery. I was drawn to 'What's Going On' more than any other piece because it radiated empowerment: The Black figures contrasted with the white suits and background immediately drew my eye to their faces, their expressions and small details like their lipstick, sideburns and the casual way they held their hands — comfortable and assured. It was the first time I'd seen an artwork in a show that represented Black figures in a manner reminiscent of the large portraits of nobility at the National Gallery in London. Want all of The Times? K-Pop Superstars Twice Chart A Debut Top 40 Smash

Twice reaches the top 40 for the first time in the U.K. as 'Takedown' jumps to No. 35, while 'Strategy' climbs to No. 45 on the Official Singles chart. SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - FEBRUARY 22: The girl group TWICE attends the 6th Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards on February 22, 2017 in Seoul, South Korea. (Photo by Han Myung-Gu/WireImage) WireImage For the past several weeks, Twice has filled two spaces on the Official Singles chart, the ranking of the biggest songs in the United Kingdom. That's a rare feat for any K-pop act, and the girl group has the Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters to thank. Both tunes from the South Korean outfit that appear on the competitive list come from that project's soundtrack, and this frame the smashes are on the rise. Twice scores its first top 40 hit in the U.K. this week as 'Takedown' climbs 12 spaces. Last time around, in just its second turn on the Official Singles chart, the track appeared at No. 47. Now it rockets to No. 35 — a new all-time high for both the troupe and the song itself. Twice may be on track to earn another top 40 hit in just a few days when the Official Charts Company publishes new data. 'Strategy' also improves, and by an even greater number of spaces than 'Takedown.' 'Strategy' soars from No. 64 to No. 45, sitting just below the important region which typically dictates when a charting track becomes a proper hit. Throughout the years, Twice has landed just three wins on the Official Singles chart. 'Takedown' and 'Strategy' easily rank as the group's highest-climbing wins, and they are also tied as the band's longest-running hits. In 2021, Twice debuted on the Official Singles roster with 'The Feels.' That cut spent one turn at No. 80 and then disappeared. Between Twice's two hits in the U.K., 'Takedown' is perhaps enjoying the most exciting frame. Not only does that title dance into the top 40, but it also debuts on a trio of other rankings, as sales and streams of the smash grow considerably from one week to the next.
