Emmanuel Clase news increases chance for Guardians to trade other star players

The Cleveland Guardians have been in a tough situation after recent news on the betting scandal that highlights star closer Emmanuel Clase's name. Clase joined teammate Luis Ortiz on non-disciplinary leave after both players had been involved in gambling investigations; the earliest Clase and Ortiz can return to action will be Aug. 31. With this being said, the Guardians' biggest trade candidate lost his value for the season. This news has raised the odds for multiple other Cleveland stars to be traded before the MLB trade deadline on Thursday. According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, Emmanuel Clase's suspension "ended any chance of the Guardians becoming a buyer, and likely increased the possibility of the team trading right-hander Shane Bieber and perhaps left fielder Steven Kwan." "The Guardians intend to set a high bar for their desired return," Rosenthal mentioned in an article on Monday night. Shane Bieber, 30, is a former Cy Young Award winner and is coming off Tommy John surgery. He's currently playing on a contract that will have him earning $10 million this season and will have a $16 million player option for 2026. Steven Kwan, 27, is earning about $4.2 million this season and and the Guardians have arbitration control of him until after 2027. It's been reported that he's drawn interest from multiple teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies, and San Diego Padres. After Emmanuel Clase's suspension, it's looking like the Cleveland Guardians are going to have to change their intentions leading up to the MLB trade deadline. It looks like they will be changing from being a buyer to potentially selling players.

Brewers hitting coach Al LeBoeuf returns to team after cancer surgery

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach Al LeBoeuf has returned to the team after leaving earlier this month to have surgery for prostate cancer. LeBoeuf (leh-BUFF) is coaching in the majors for the first time this year. The Brewers named him lead hitting coach last October after he'd worked as a hitting coach in Triple-A the previous six seasons. 'We're happy he's back,' manager Pat Murphy said. 'Any time anybody goes through something like that, it's difficult. We kept in good contact and he was eager to be back and be part of it.' The Brewers have three hitting coaches on staff: LeBoeuf, Connor Dawson and Eric Theisen. LeBoeuf, 65, is in his 16th season in the Brewers' organization with many Milwaukee hitters having long ties with him that began as they worked their way through the minors, including leadoff hitter Sal Frelick. 'We love Buffy so much. I've been with him for the past four or five years now,' said Frelick, who was one of three Brewers players to hit home runs in an 8-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night. 'It was really tough losing him for a little bit. Everyone said their prayers and luckily he was able to have a good procedure and he's healing up quick. So happy to have him back.' ___ AP MLB: Rich Rovito, The Associated Press

Rockies score 4 runs in 9th inning against Cade Smith to rally for 8-6 win over Guardians

CLEVELAND (AP) — Tyler Freeman singled home the go-ahead run off Cade Smith as Colorado scored four times in the ninth inning, rallying the Rockies to an 8-6 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night. Smith (2-4) moved into the closer role earlier in the day when Emmanuel Clase was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of a Major League Baseball investigation into sports betting. Smith gave up four runs, one earned, and got only one out after entering with a 5-4 lead. Colorado scored the tying run on a throwing error by Smith, bringing rookie Warming Bernabel around from second after his leadoff double. Hunter Goodman had an RBI double in the ninth after hitting a solo homer in the eighth off Hunter Gaddis. Tyler Kinley (1-3) tossed a scoreless eighth and Seth Halvorsen gave up an RBI single to Nolan Jones in the ninth before earning his 11th save. The Guardians went in front 5-3 with a five-run seventh, highlighted by pinch-hitter Bo Naylor's three-run homer against Jake Bird. Carlos Santana drew a bases-loaded walk from Victor Vodnik to put Cleveland ahead. Freeman drove in three runs against his former team and Bernabel hit his second homer in three big league games. Bradley Blalock struck out a career-high seven in six scoreless innings for the Rockies, who have the worst record in the majors at 28-78. Key moment Brenton Doyle put down a sacrifice bunt with nobody out in the ninth and reached second base safely when Smith threw the ball wildly to first. Doyle wound up scoring the go-ahead run. Key stat The Rockies sent 10 batters to the plate in the ninth against Smith and Tim Herrin, collecting three hits, two walks and a hit batter. Up next Rockies RHP Tanner Gordon (2-2, 3.13 ERA) faces LHP Logan Allen (6-9, 4.16 ERA) in the middle game of the series Tuesday. ___ AP MLB:
