Air India To Insure Passengers On All Flights For Next Few Months After Ahmedabad Tragedy

A London-bound Air India Flight AI-171 crashed into a residential area of Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing all but one of its 242 passengers and over 30 on the ground.
Following the devastating Air India accident that killed more than 260 people, Air India has decided to insure every passenger on all its flights as a precautionary measure, according to a source in the airline.
As per the source, each passenger will be covered for approximately Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. This move will remain in effect for at least the next few months.
Three days after the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, which has so far claimed over 270 lives, hospital authorities on Sunday confirmed the identification of 47 victims through DNA matching, including that of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
Rupani was among the 242 passengers and crew members on board the London-bound Air India flight AI-171 that crashed on Thursday. Only one passengers managed to miraculously survive the crash on that day, while more than 30 people were killed on the ground.
Due to the severe condition of many bodies, as they are burnt or disfigured, authorities are relying on DNA matching for identification. '"A total of 47 plane crash victims have been identified so far through DNA matching. Of these, the bodies of 24 victims have been handed over to their respective families. These deceased were from Rajasthan and different parts of Gujarat," Additional Civil Superintendent Dr. Rajnish Patel told reporters.
Meanwhile, Air India on Sunday said it is working closely with other Tata group companies to provide every possible assistance to the families and loved ones of the plane crash victims.
The airline in a statement also said that over 400 family members have reached Ahmedabad and are being assisted by its teams on the ground. It had earlier promised complete transparency in the investigation into establishing the cause of the accident.
PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visited the crash site to assess the situation on Sunday. He was briefed on the sequence of events and interacted with the injured at the Civil Hospital. 'I am very pained by the enormity of the tragedy. Everybody is sad. It is our duty to share grief and express our feelings for the victims," Mishra told reporters.
Authorities announced Sunday that the second black box, the cockpit voice recorder, had been recovered. This may offer investigators more clues about what went wrong.
There were 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, seven Portuguese and a Canadian on board the flight, as well as 12 crew members.

Ahmedabad plane crash: DNA confirms identities of 87 of those killed
The identities of 87 persons who died in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12 have been confirmed through DNA testing, PTI quoted an official as saying on Monday. The bodies of 57 persons have been handed over to their families after the identification, said Dr Rajnish Patel, professor of surgery at BJ Medical College and Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad. On Sunday, the civil hospital confirmed that the body of Gujarat's former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had also been identified through the DNA test. The body was handed over to his family on Monday. Rupani was among the 242 persons aboard the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft – enroute to London's Gatwick airport from Ahmedabad – that crashed just 33 seconds after taking off. Only one passenger survived with ' impact injuries '. The aircraft's crash into the hostel building of the BJ Medical College also killed at least four medical students on the ground. This is being viewed as the world's worst aviation disaster in a decade. Though the number of persons killed on the ground has yet to be ascertained, the civil hospital said on Sunday that 250 samples, including those of persons killed on the ground, have been collected for identification, reported PTI. Meanwhile, a high-level panel constituted to probe the accident will likely hold its first meeting on Monday, The Indian Express reported.

Jewellery worth Rs 2.6 lakh, rubber scrap valued at Rs 1.25 lakh stolen in separate incidents in Dakshina Kannada
MANGALURU: In an incident that recently came to light, a woman from Rekya village in Beltangady taluk reported the theft of gold jewellery worth Rs 2.6 lakh from her home. Kusuma, 48, the complainant, stated that she and her husband follow a daily routine of locking their house and placing the key in the cattle shed before heading to work. According to her complaint, she owned approximately 52 grams of gold jewellery, including a chain, bangle, and earrings, which she stored securely in a locked cupboard inside their house. The key to the cupboard was usually kept in a corner of the house. She last saw the jewellery on May 23. However, on June 14 around 6.30 pm, while preparing to visit a temple, the couple looked for the jewellery, and the valuables were missing. The key remained in its usual place, suggesting that someone familiar with their routine may have accessed the locker. A case was registered at the Dharmasthala Police Station under Sections 331(1) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. In another incident, a man accused a rubber tapper of stealing rubber scrap worth Rs 1.25 lakh from a leased plantation in Kuthluru village, Belthangady taluk. He employed Jobin Mathew as a rubber tapper on May 3, who was also residing in the plantation's shelter. According to the complaint, between 1pm on May 17 and 8pm on May 19, Jobin allegedly stole around 13 quintals of collected rubber scrap and absconded. The stolen material is estimated to be worth Rs 1.25 lakh. Vino said he travelled to Kerala to trace the accused at his native place but was unable to locate him. The complaint was filed after these efforts failed, leading to a delay in reporting the incident. A case was registered at Venur Police Station under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
