Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney met in Calgary on the sidelines of the G7 summit, which is set to take place in Alberta, Canada, from 15-17 June, setting aside protocol to highlight shared values and warmth between the two countries and their leaders.After a handshake atop his slate-blue RAAF jet, PM Albanese was greeted by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek, and Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski, everyone expressing gratitude for Australia's recent deployment of 96 firefighters to assist with Canada's raging Northern Prairies wildfires.Carney presented an iconic Stetson cowboy hat to Albanese, who replied in kind by gifting a traditional Australian Akubra. Albanese also shared a framed poster from the Australian classic Gallipoli, and Carney gifted a cold‑cast bronze bear sculpture by Roy Hinz, on behalf of Canada's rugged landscapes.'You always do, and Australia always does step up,' Carney said, personally thanking Albanese for the firefighters' efforts. Albanese, in return, said, 'You can always rely upon Australia. I know our firefighters are really proud.'The pair celebrated Canada's decision to acquire Australia's Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) valued at $6.5 billion to boost Arctic surveillance.They also explored expanding ties on critical minerals essential to clean‑energy supply chains. Carney noted that Australia 'had a lot to contribute to the G7' in this space.Though not a G7 member, Australia received a gracious invitation to the summit. Albanese expressed thanks and underscored the urgency of global cooperation, 'climate‑change response, defense, prosperity,' he told reporters.In the coming days, he will meet leaders from South Korea, France, Germany, Japan, the UK, the EU, and the US, culminating in his first in‑person meeting with US President Donald Trump Albanese plans to advocate for Australia on steel and aluminium tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump and underline the strategic value of AUKUS, the trilateral security pact with the US and UK.

Raj HC orders visa extension for Oz child born to Indian parents to stop deportation
Jaipur: Rajasthan high court Tuesday directed the foreigners regional registration officer in Delhi to extend the visa period for a five-year-old Australian citizen born to Indian parents without insisting on a no objection certificate (NOC) from the child's estranged mother who is fighting a matrimonial dispute with her husband. Hearing a writ petition filed by the child's father, Justice Anoop Dhand observed that the child, born in Australia to Indian citizens who returned to India in 2022, was residing with her father and could not be left at the mercy of her estranged mother. The HC stressed that the court's paramount consideration is the best interest of the child and that denial of visa extension would classify the minor as an illegal migrant, potentially leading to deportation. The court invoked international conventions, particularly UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), to assert that separating a child from either parent violates Article 9 of UNCRC. It also noted that no custody order favoured the mother, who earlier withdrew her application for guardianship. The court also allowed the petitioner to apply for an overseas citizenship of India (OCI) card for the child, urging the authorities to consider the application sympathetically within three months. The court called upon Union home ministry to revisit laws concerning children born abroad to Indian citizens, to address such unique and complex legal issues in the future.

Stricter rules likely to curb substandard steel imports

According to officials aware of the development, instances of non-Bureau of Indian Standards (non-BIS) compliant steel being sold in the domestic market are being flagged. These substandard products are said to be imported duty free by export-oriented units under the advance authorisation."The imported steel, meant for export production is often sold in the domestic market, resulting in revenue loss for the government and putting domestic steel makers at a competitive disadvantage," the official told currently levies an interim 12% safeguard duty, and a 7.5% basic customs duty on steel imports. There is also a Quality Control Order (QCO) which bans the import and sale of non-BIS steel in the advance authorisation scheme allows exporters to import raw material at nil duty and without QCO regulations with an export mandate that needs to be met within 18 months."Eighteen months is too long, and traceability of non-BIS compliant steel is a matter of concern since it is making its way to the domestic market and not being used to make exported products," the official centre is now said to be considering lowering the Export Obligation Period (EOP) of advance authorisations to six months in a bid to ensure the substandard steel is not tightening the Advance Authorisation regime, India is also planning to withdraw an exemption from the QCO granted to domestic importers under the scheme. This too is aimed at plugging misuse of the scheme, officials to Fitch Ratings, India is also expected to extend its 12% safeguard duty and even revise the duty rates upwards as industry conditions worsen globally. "Governments around the world have been raising barriers to steel imports in recent months," Fitch said while adding India has introduced other non-tariff measures to protect domestic producers in recent steel imports fell by 16% annually in the first half of this calendar year. "Barriers to steel imports should benefit domestic producers," Fitch added.

MoSPI proposes new base years for IIP, GDP & CPI

The new CPI will draw weight of items from the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2023-24."The Ministry is underway to revise the base year of GDP, IIP, and CPI," MoS for Statistics and Programme Implementation Rao Inderjit Singh informed Lok Sabha.
