CBS cancels ‘Late Show With Stephen Colbert,' citing ‘financial decision'

Yahoo28-07-2025
Stephen Colbert's beloved late-night show is coming to an end.
CBS announced its plan to cancel 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' after the next TV season in a statement on Thursday, July 17.
The network claimed it was 'purely a financial decision.'
'We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire 'The Late Show' franchise in May of 2026,' CBS executives' statement read. 'We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television.'
'This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount,' the announcement concluded.
Colbert addressed the situation during the taping of Thursday's show at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York, sharing that he learned the news on Wednesday evening.
Delivering the news from his iconic 'Late Show' desk, the television host said he was appreciative to the network for giving him a platform.
As the audience booed, Colbert chimed in, 'Yeah. I share your feelings.'
He continued to explain, 'I'm not being replaced, this is all just going away.'
'I do want to say that the folks at CBS have been great partners. I'm so grateful to the Tiffany Network for giving me this chair and this beautiful theater to call home. And of course, I'm grateful to you, the audience who have joined us. … And I am extraordinarily, deeply grateful to the 200 people who work here,' Colbert continued.
'We get to do this show for each other, every day, all day,' he added. 'It is a fantastic job. I wish someone else was getting it.'
CBS' decision marks the end of the network's historic late-night programming, which started when David Letterman jumped ship from NBC in 1993 to host 'The Late Show With David Letterman.'
Colbert took over the show when Letterman left in 2015. He's been a consistent ratings leader for the network ever since.
The star has hosted nearly 1,700 episodes over the span of almost 10 seasons. His first show aired on Sept. 8, 2015.
Before his stint on 'The Late Show,' Colbert starred on 'The Daily Show' and 'The Colbert Report.'
There were already rumblings that Colbert might be on the chopping block, as Skydance Media is slated to acquire Paramount Global, CBS' parent company.
This is just another blow to CBS, which recently settled a lawsuit with President Trump in order to keep the peace and save the Skydance-Paramount merger.
The network already canceled 'After Midnight' with comedian Taylor Tomlinson, which replaced 'The Late Late Show with James Corden,' after just two seasons.
As for its competing networks, ABC's 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' is set to film its final season of a three-year deal in fall, and NBC's Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers signed deals last year to continue their shows through 2028.

Kristi Noem Slams South Park's ‘Petty' Portrayal of Her: ‘It's So Lazy to Make Fun of Women for How They Look'

No surprise here: Kristi Noem isn't thrilled with her unflattering portrayal on the most recent episode of South Park. The United States Secretary of Homeland Security called in to Glenn Beck's radio show on Thursday to share her thoughts on the Aug. 6 episode, in which an animated Noem recruited mild-mannered elementary school guidance counselor Mr. Mackey into joining ICE. More from TVLine South Park Savages ICE and Kristi Noem, Sends Trump to Mar-a-Lago - Read Recap South Park Premiere Delivers 6 Million Viewers, Best 18-49 Share Since 1999 Save the Dates: South Park Sets Return, Kelly Clarkson's NBC Series and More In addition to being ruthlessly racist, South Park's version of Noem had a penchant for shooting puppies — a nod to Noem's real-life memoir, in which she recalled killing her young dog Cricket after he was deemed too 'aggressive.' The show also gave Noem a melting face, which required an entire team to reapply each time it fell off. 'It never ends, but it's so lazy to constantly make fun of women for how they look,' Noem said to Beck. 'It's always the liberals and the extremists who do that. If they wanted to criticize my job, go ahead and do that, but clearly they can't. They just pick something petty like that.' Despite her strong opinions, Noem claims that she didn't watch the episode, as she was otherwise occupied 'going over budget numbers and stuff.' One person who likely did watch this week's South Park was Vice President JD Vance, who responded to his own portrayal by posting 'Well, I've made it' on X. The episode reimagined Mar-a-Lago as a Fantasy Island-esque retreat, with President Donald Trump as Mr. Roarke and Vance as Tattoo. Noem's displeasure with South Park comes two weeks after the White House released a statement regarding Trump's portrayal in the season premiere. 'The Left's hypocrisy truly has no end,' White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said in response to Trump's portrayal as a whiny-voiced, flappy-headed, Satan-loving, small-membered dictator. 'For years, they have come after South Park for what they labeled as 'offense' content, but suddenly they are praising the show,' the statement continued. 'Just like the creators of South Park, the Left has no authentic or original content, which is why their popularity continues to hit record lows. This show hasn't been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention. President Trump has delivered on more promises in just six months than any other president in our country's history — and no fourth-rate show can derail President Trump's hot streak.' Spend ‘Eternity' with Miles Teller and Elizabeth Olsen: Everything to know about the fantasy rom-com

It's been an Eternity since we've had a romantic comedy like this. Eternity, a fantasy rom-com from A24, will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September before opening in theaters in November (limited on Nov. 14, wide on Nov. 26). More from Gold Derby 'You can hear so much of his heart': Amy Berg on her years-long mission to create the definitive Jeff Buckley doc, 'It's Never Over' 'He really pissed me off!' Emmy nominee Brian Tyree Henry on why he loved to hate his character in Dope Thief Hailing from director David Freyne, with a script by Freyne and Pat Cunnane, Eternity stars Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen, and Callum Turner in a scenario that seems a bit like The Lobster meets Defending Your Life. The trailer is out now: Here's everything you need to know about this love triangle with a twist. What's the story? Eternity is set in a retrofuturist purgatory that resembles New York's TWA Hotel, where recently deceased souls wait to depart for where they'll spend the rest of time. It follows three people who are faced with the most consequential decision of their (after)lives. Here's the official description: 'In an afterlife where souls have one week to decide where to spend eternity, Joan (Olsen) is faced with the impossible choice between the man she spent her life with (Teller) and her first love (Turner), who died young and has waited decades for her to arrive.' Who else is in it? In addition to Teller (Top Gun: Maverick), Olsen (WandaVision), and Turner (Masters of the Air), Eternity features John Early (Search Party) and Academy Award winner (The Holdovers) as 'afterlife coordinators.' Olga Merediz (In the Heights) also stars. Who's behind it? Eternity is not Irish filmmaker Freyne's directorial debut, but it is his biggest film to date; he previously helmed 2017 horror film The Cured and 2020 comedy Dating Amber. It's Cunnane's first produced feature script. It landed on the Black List of best unproduced scripts in 2022. He previously wrote for the series Designated Survivor, and before that worked as a staffer in Barack Obama's White House. After this, he has Olympic skier drama Winter Games, also with Teller, plus Hailee Steinfeld. The film's producers are Tim White and Trevor White (Academy Award nominees for King Richard). What are its award chances? Eternity does not have any awards buzz at this time — it's not ranked on Gold Derby's combined odds for 2026 Academy Awards nominations. But we'll see what happens after it premieres at TIFF. Law Roach Is, Hands Down, The Best Part Of "Project Runway"

Earlier this month, Project Runway returned to our screen with some new and familiar faces. Most notably, Heidi Klum has returned as host and judge of the notable series. Nina Garcia, editor-in-chief of Elle Magazine, is also a returning face. Christian Siriano, Season 4 winner and acclaimed fashion designer, returns this season as the designers' mentor (replacing Tim Gunn). Related: Last, but certainly not least, to round out the panel of permanent judges is none other than celebrity stylist and image architect, Law Roach. As a long-time fan of both the series AND of Law, I was excited to see what kind of energy he'd bring to the table and, let's just say, he BRINGS IT. Law has never shied away from speaking his truth, and speak his truth he does! I want to be Law Roach when I grow up. In the Season 21 premiere, the designers were broken up into teams — House of (Disney) Villains and House of (Disney) Princesses. House of Villains took home the W this week, and it's so cool to have Law on the panel because he can speak not only to the now, but also to who is relevant. Like, as a designer, I obviously want my clothes to be well received, but to have a celeb stylist want to put a famous person in my clothes? Chef's kiss. Law also has an amazing eye for detail! Nothing gets past Law! Related: "Hate is such a big word." "It's a short word. It's only four letters." LAW!! Gooped and gagged. "Nigerian auntie" took me out. AND THIS WAS ONE OF THE TOP LOOKS! As a Nigerian woman / future Nigerian auntie, I see what Law meant and I have to say, I completely agree. In a full circle moment, Law was brutal — but honest! — in regards to Jesus' look last week. The following week? Law gave credit where credit was due! This goes to show that it's not personal, it's fashion! A look is a look is a look! Related: The challenge for Week 2 was to create a cohesive day-to-night athleisure collection to be produced by Calia, a women's luxury active wear line. Law was quick to hone in on one of the looks from the losing collection. Law said, "there will be no cultural appropriation on my watch!" I will start saying this: Say it louder, Law! "It's not called America's Next Top Best Friend." The internet is also loving Law's addition to the franchise: Related: Needless to say, I will be tuning into Disney+ every week to watch Law in action. Stream Project Runway on Disney+.
