Julie Plec on why she hopes Meryl Streep likes ‘We Were Liars'

New York Post17-06-2025
Liar, liar.
Prime Video's new teen drama 'We Were Liars' (premiering Wednesday, June 18) is a twisty summertime thriller.
Based on a wildly popular novel of the same name, the show is helmed by 'The Vampire Diaries' mastermind Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie.
'What drew me to it is the deep emotional roller coaster that this story takes you on, starting from what seems just like a very simple, sweet, nostalgic coming-of-age story about first love and best friends and summer, and takes you from basically all those vibes on a very twisty-turny, surprising journey into a big tone shift,' Plec exclusively told The Post.

'We Were Liars' follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) and her circle of cousins and friends – including Johnny (Joseph Zada), Mirren (Esther McGregor), and Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) – who have adventures over the course of several summers on her affluent family's private island.
But, things take a darker turn as Cadence must figure out what's happening after she loses her memory, and everyone seems to have secrets.
Rounding out the cast is Candice King, Mamie Gummer, Rahul Kohli, and David Morse.

'Casting a big ensemble like this, where everybody is supposed to be related to each other and blonde, as in the books, is never easy,' said Plec.
She added, 'Blonde, you can usually fake, and, which we did pretty well in a couple situations, but you really need to be able to believe that they're all of one piece.'
For Gat, an Indian boy who is Cadence's love interest, she said, 'We looked high and low. We were able to cast the role of Gat from a beautiful young actor who had never acted for a living before at all. His audition tape was done in his dorm room on campus just before he graduated [from] university.'

Plec continued, 'We got to discover the incredible. Mamie Gummer, who's worked for years, but is stepping into her own as a leading lady.'
Gummer, 41, is Meryl Streep's daughter. When asked about the probability that Streep, 75, will tune in, Plec said, 'I have alternate [thoughts] of like, 'Meh, that fine, she won't watch it, that's okay,' to 'Oh my god, Meryl Streep is probably gonna watch the show.''
She quipped, 'I just hope she likes it, to be honest.'

'We Were Liars' is also America's introduction to Aussie actor Zada, who is poised to have his career take off, as he's been cast as the star of the next 'Hunger Games' movie, 'Sunrise on the Reaping.'
'I feel very proud. I know he's worked before in Australia, so somebody else gets to take credit for discovering him off the street, but Carina and I are gladly gonna take credit for discovering [him] in the United States of America,' Plec said.
She recalled how during filming, Gummer even set him up for his next major role – the Netflix adaptation of 'East of Eden' starring Florence Pugh – 'because Mamie called her very good friend, Zoe Kazan, who was directing it and said, 'You gotta meet this kid. He's extraordinary.''

Plec added, 'I think we knew it on set. When we were in the sound stage, the sound engineers would be like, 'God, that kid is so good.' I think we're just at the beginning of a very long, very cool road for him.'
Meanwhile, Plec has done three shows to date in 'The Vampire Diaries' universe, including 'The Originals' and 'Legacies.'
About whether there could be more coming, Plec said that she's not working on anything specific at the moment.
However, she added, 'I have had ideas in my head for more stories in Mystic Falls for pretty much since I started telling stories in Mystic Falls,' referring to the town where 'The Vampire Diaries' took place.
'So all anybody has to do is ask, and I will be there with bells on.'

Olympic rugby star Ilona Maher thinks we've ‘lost the plot' with this health trend: ‘Don't lie to yourself'

Hold the cottage cheese. Pro rugby player Ilona Maher — whose team won the bronze medal in the Paris Olympics — spends plenty of time training to dominate on the pitch. But there's one fitness-focused diet trend that she thinks is a bit over-the-top — and she points to herself as evidence that it's unnecessary. 3 Pro rugby player Ilona Maher thinks the obession with protein has gone a bit off the rails. AP A former athlete herself, Kylie Kelce complained about how 'everything is trying to be high protein' on a June episode of her podcast, Not Gonna Lie, arguing that not everything needs added protein powder. Maher was on the same page, and she's no fan of a low-carb lifestyle either. 'I have a high-protein diet, but I also have probably the highest-carb diet ever,' the 29-year-old Bristol Bears player said. 'I was raised on very high-carb diets. And carbs are really the energy that you need — that's science, truly.' That isn't to say she doesn't eat protein too. 'I get protein in for most meals, but I'm actually not as committed to the bit as I maybe could be. I think I could be leaner … if I was really focusing on protein. But I just don't see — I think I'm fine,' she added. A big issue for both women is the trend of swapping 'real' food for protein-heavy substitutes. In recent years, for example, cottage cheese recipes have blown up on social media, with people using it in place of cream cheese, sour cream, ricotta and even mayo and butter. It's low in fat and high in protein, a combo that can keep you full, increase metabolism and preserve muscle mass. Plus, the curdling process creates bacteria that are good for your gut. 3 Maher, whose team won the bronze medal in the Paris Olympics, eats protein most meals — but she's not swapping 'real food' for protein-ified recipes. Getty Images But Kelce said her concern is people blending up cottage cheese and pretending it tastes like ice cream. 'Don't lie to yourself,' Maher added in agreement. 'I saw a recent one, it was like protein tiramisu. She dips the rice cake in espresso and then she puts Greek yogurt on there. I was like, that's not even f—-ing close!' 'I think we really lost the plot on that,' she said. Though she is working to eat more protein at the urging of her dietitian, for her that means more 'real food.' 'So after training I'll have a quick protein shake — that's very easy, quick protein. But if I can, I'm gonna have the eggs. I love like beef jerky,' she said. 3 'I saw a recent one, it was like protein tiramisu. She dips the rice cake in espresso and then she puts Greek yogurt on there. I was like, that's not even f—-ing close!' she said. Getty Images 'I just think, I mean maybe I'm wrong in science, but I don't know if we need that much. Because I'm doing fine and I just had a bagel this morning.' She's not the first star to take issue with the high-protein craze. This month, Bethenny Frankel also called out the fad. 'The obsession with protein is an out-of-control fad that everyday people are fixated on as if they're training for the Olympics,' she told The Post. 'They can also be calorie-dense. It's another marketing gimmick like keto or carnivore or low carb or all the absurd fads I've witnessed over the years. Balance is key.' In fact, studies show that there is such a thing as eating too much protein — and it can make you gain weight and clog your arteries. 'Consuming excessive protein, particularly from animal sources, raises insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels,' Dr. Joseph Antoun, CEO of the longevity company L-Nutra, previously told The Post. Primarily produced in the liver, IGF-1 is a hormone, that plays a crucial role in promoting growth and regulating metabolism. 'While it's essential in childhood and for muscle repair,' Antoun said, 'chronically elevated IGF-1 in adults has been linked to accelerated biological aging and therefore an increased risk of age-related conditions, notably cancer.'

Pete Davidson didn't know 'SNL' was still on before he auditioned

Pete Davidson didn't realize 'Saturday Night Live' was still airing when he auditioned for the popular sketch show more than 10 years ago. During an appearance on 'The Breakfast Club' radio show earlier this week, the 31-year-old comedian opened up about his experience joining 'SNL' back in 2014. 'I was so lucky,' he said Wednesday. 'I was so young. I was super naive. So I just was like, I'm just going to smoke weed and talk about, you know, what's going on in my life.' 8 Pete Davidson stopped by 'The Breakfast Club' radio show on Wednesday, Aug. 11. The Breakfast Club/YouTube However, the 'King of Staten Island' star did not regularly watch the Lorne Michaels-created show, which made it difficult for him to answer questions about his favorite sketches and cast members. 'I was like, 'I like the Californians or whatever,'' Davidson, who rushed to the bathroom to look at older 'SNL' clips on YouTube at the time, said. 'But I had no idea what I was talking about.' The 'Bodies Bodies Bodies' actor also admitted that it was hard for him to connect with his fellow cast members, particularly because of the significant age gap between him and 'SNL' stalwarts like Colin Jost, 43, Michael Che, 42, and Kate McKinnon, 41. 8 Pete Davidson and Colin Jost on 'Saturday Night Live' in November 2017. 'Not saying I didn't work hard, but I was only doing comedy, like, three, four years,' Davidson, who revealed in July that he's expecting his first child with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt, explained. 'And a lot of what people liked about me was like, 'Oh, this is, like, a kid from Staten Island that's just talking s–t.'' 'So you got to remember all of these people are 10, 15 years older than me working so hard,' he added. Although Davidson ultimately departed 'SNL' in 2022 after eight seasons, he returned for the show's 50th anniversary special back in February. 8 Pete Davidson on 'SNL' in November 208. 8 Pete Davidson, Norman Reedus, Colin Jost and Michael Che on 'SNL' in April 2015. 'It's a terrible audience,' Davidson said. 'It's just famous people, and famous people only like themselves.' But not all of the star-studded guests at the 50th anniversary special were that bad, according to the 'Meet Cute' comedian, because Meryl Streep was also in the audience. 8 Pete Davidson and Colin Jost at the Empire Hotel Rooftop in New York City on May 19, 2015. 'I get to my seat and I just look and I'm like, 'This can't be right.' And it was Meryl Streep and I just sat down and I was like, 'I'm so sorry that I'm sitting next to you. You're the best.' And she was very nice.' But despite Davidson's remark that the crowd at the anniversary special was 'terrible,' he admitted that it provided him with some newfound respect for the comedy 'institution' that 'SNL' is. 'This is like, you know, the Harvard of comedy,' he concluded.

‘Superman' star Terence Stamp dead at 87

Terence Stamp, who is best known for his roles in the Christopher Reeve 'Superman' movies and 'Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,' has passed away. He was 87. The beloved actor's family announced the news in a statement to Reuters on Sunday, Aug. 17. 'He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come,' his loved ones said. 'We ask for privacy at this sad time.' Advertisement 6 Terence Stamp attends a screening of 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert' in London, England, on March 23, 2019. He later starred in 1966's 'Modesty Blaise' and 1967's 'Far from the Madding Crowd,' the latter of which also included his then-girlfriend, Julie Christie. 'It's a mystery to me,' he told the outlet. 'I was in my prime. When the 1960s ended, I just ended with it.' 6 Terence Stamp at a screening of 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert' in London, England, on March 23, 2019. 'During that time away from the screen, I had transmuted myself,' he told The Guardian 10 years before his passing. 'I no longer saw myself as a leading man.'
