Oman hosts seminar on expanding insurance coverage in MENA
The seminar brings together leading figures in regulatory bodies, insurance companies, and industry experts from the Arab world and beyond. The seminar is a key platform for promoting regional cooperation, exchanging experience, and debating the emerging challenges and opportunities for the insurance sector amidst rapid economic and technological change.
The programme consists of a series of panel sessions and expert workshops, with priorities being strengthening regulatory frameworks to remain in line with international developments, broadening the actuarial function to foster financial stability, and examining opportunities for digital innovation to drive sectorial development.
Ahmed bin Ali al Maamari, FSA Vice President – Insurance, commented: "Legislators and regulators from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region met today with international organisations to discuss the region's most pressing challenges, including climate change, cyber security, and geopolitical tensions."
Al Maamari added: "The meeting aims to foster cooperation and develop pragmatic solutions, with a specific focus on the insurance sector's role in the management of emerging risks. Issues under consideration include the creation of new insurance products to support economic resilience and social stability, and fostering technology initiatives while inserting regulatory and societal safeguards.'
Ahmed bin Salim al Harassi, Director General of the Market Regulation and Development Unit stated, "This regional conference is being organized to address the key regulatory challenges facing authorities across the Middle East and North Africa, with a particular focus on the challenge of climate change and the increasing frequency of natural disasters in the Sultanate of Oman.".
The event also highlights the growing need for effective post-disaster financial response mechanisms, which renders the insurance sector a key industry in the provision of financial protection. The discussions also surround the digitalization of insurance services, both the potential and cyber security risk it brings," Al Harassi added.
"Regulators are also figuring out how to align domestic frameworks with international standards, balancing compliance with the need to foster innovation. As part of this, the uptake of risk-based supervision is being promoted — intensifying oversight where risks are great, while offering flexibility in less risky domains to foster growth and innovation," he concluded.
Siham Ramli, Director of International Relations and Communication at Morocco's Insurance and Social Welfare Supervisory Authority, said, "Previously perceived as a sheer financial support tool, the insurance sector has developed into a pillar of social protection and inclusive economic development. It is now leading in covering an extensive array of society's risks — environmental, health, digital, and economic," she said.

CBUAE gold reserves rise 26% in January to May 2025
The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE) increased its gold reserves by 25.899% during the first five months of the year to AED28.933 billion at the end of May, up from AED22.981 billion at the end of December 2024. According to the Central Bank's statistical bulletin issued today, the CBUAE's gold holdings rose by 0.49% month-on-month in May, to AED 28.791 billion at the end of April. Statistics showed that demand deposits also grew, exceeding AED1.166 trillion by the end of May, compared to AED1.109 trillion at the end of December 2024. Of this total, AED892.577 billion were in local currency and AED274.329 billion in foreign currencies. Savings deposits rose to AED359.57 billion at the end of May, up from AED317.48 billion at the end of December 2024. This included AED305.508 billion in local currency and AED54.062 billion in foreign currencies. Time deposits exceeded AED1billion for the firs time by the end of May, including AED614.854 billion in local currency and AED398.348 billion in foreign currencies.

TRENDS discusses content industry transformations at Arab Youth Media Creativity Summit in Egypt

The Summit is organised by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, under the patronage of the Secretariat-General of the League of Arab States and the Egyptian Cabinet, and continues in New Alamein City, Egypt, until August his opening remarks at the Summit, Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS Research & Advisory, emphasised that the Arab Youth Media Creativity Summit addresses an issue of vital importance that is closely tied to the future of young people, both professionally and personally. He noted that TRENDS' participation, through a delegation from its Youth Council, reflects the Centre's commitment to supporting Arab youth in exploring opportunities and challenges, particularly in the media Al-Ali added that the rapid transformations in media and creative content industries require urgent and effective action to enhance Arab cooperation in developing the media sector. This is especially true given the exponential growth in AI-driven media and content production tools, which have sparked fierce competition, not only between humans and machines, but also among institutions competing over how extensively they integrate AI tools into their operations. This, in turn, affects how effectively these institutions meet their objectives in terms of audience reach, influence, and Al-Ali went on to say that these developments are deepening the connection between media and the business sector, transforming media investment into a highly strategic and complex undertaking. He underlined that the media's growing entanglement with national security and social stability has made it more important than ever, particularly amid concerns over the potential misuse of AI in media and content creation. Such misuse, he warned, could negatively affect collective awareness and facilitate the spread of false and misleading information.
