Ministry Of Awesome Announces Graham Scown As New Chief Executive

Scoop05-05-2025

Tuesday, 6 May 2025 — The board of trustees at Ministry of Awesome is pleased to announce the appointment of Graham Scown as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.
Over the past three years, Christchurch-based Ministry of Awesome has transformed from a regional startup hub into a key national player supporting founders across the country.
Scown's appointment will be focused on implementing Ministry of Awesome's strategic plan to build New Zealand's most impactful founder-focused programmes for globally ambitious startups, supporting a rise in women entrepreneurs through Electrify Aotearoa, and supporting a more aligned and collaborative startup community.
'Graham's experience in bridging the worlds of government, universities, startups, and industry will be instrumental as we build founder-focused startup programmes to increase economic productivity in New Zealand through startup innovation,' says Dale Stephens, Chair of Ministry of Awesome.
For the past 13 years, Scown has led the University of Auckland's venture-building efforts through UniServices, spearheading national programmes such as Momentum to foster student entrepreneurship and Return On Science to drive research commercialisation.
His leadership in building successful programmes to enable first-time founders to build new ventures will strengthen Ministry of Awesome's model of leveraging entrepreneurs-in-residence to deliver founder-to-founder mentorship.
Scown takes over from Interim CEO James Burnes, who will remain a member of the Board of Trustees, a position he has held since 2019. Burnes' priority over the past 14 months as interim CEO was to strengthen the organisation's focus and capabilities to deliver founder support in anticipation of changes by the government to NZ's science and innovation sector.
'Ministry of Awesome is playing a pivotal role in connecting and supporting a national framework for founder success,' said Scown.
'There's incredible momentum building in our startup ecosystem, and Ministry of Awesome is uniquely placed to fuel that, from the grassroots to the global stage. I look forward to working with our partners and founders to extend our role helping to create companies reaching global markets.'

Automotive families still feature in latest NBR rich list

Prominent New Zealand families with ties to dealerships and the automotive industry have once again featured in the National Business Review's 2025 Rich List, according to an Autotalk report. The Todd family came in fourth overall with an estimated net worth of $3.5b. Although the family sold its Todd Motors business to Mitsubishi decades ago, its diversified portfolio now spans minerals, energy, property, and healthcare. The Fukutaka family has played a key role in New Zealand's EV sector by providing early backing for Drive Electric. It remains in eighth position with a net worth of $1.6b. Former Caterpillar dealership owners, the Christchurch-based Gough family, are 41st on the list with an estimated net worth of $550m. The Giltrap family, synonymous with prestige automotive retail in New Zealand, now sits at 64th on the list. Their holdings are valued at $400m, down from $480m last year and a ranking of 41st. The Maber family behind the Power Farming Group has grown into a multinational agricultural machinery business. It holds spot number 73rd with an estimated net worth of $350m, up slightly from $340m last year. Outside of the automotive sector, and at the top of the 2025 NBR rich list are Zuru founders, Nick and Mat Mowbray. They retain their title as New Zealand's richest individuals with an estimated wealth of $20 billion, followed by packaging magnate Graeme Hart at $12.1 billion. The NBR Rich List for 2025 includes 119 individuals and families with a combined wealth of $102.1b, up from $95.55b last year. Two women have made the rich list this year for the first time since 2019. NBR Rich List editor, Hamish McNicol, commented 'The country's Rich Listers together employ thousands of people and generate billions of dollars of economic activity.'

Apple revamps CarPlay, expands digital car key support

Apple has unveiled a major upgrade to its in-car technology suite with iOS 26, bringing a refreshed look to CarPlay and expanded support for iPhone-based digital keys. The updates were revealed at the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference. CarPlay, Apple's in-vehicle infotainment platform, receives its biggest visual overhaul in years. The new 'Liquid Glass' design introduces smoother transitions, a more refined layout, and subtle lighting effects that adapt to light and dark modes. Notifications for calls and messages have been scaled back to reduce distraction. More significantly, iOS 26 introduces Live Activities and widget support, allowing real-time updates—like food deliveries or flight status—to appear on the car's screen without additional setup. Messaging also gets a boost, with support for emoji tapbacks directly within the CarPlay interface, and improved accessibility features such as sound detection alerts for emergency vehicles. While standard CarPlay continues to evolve, Apple's next-gen 'CarPlay Ultra' experience is still in its early stages. Aston Martin remains the only brand currently shipping it, though Apple has confirmed work is underway with several other marques, including Porsche, Ford, Hyundai and Kia. These systems promise a more immersive setup, with CarPlay taking over the full instrument cluster and climate controls. There's no firm timeline for when these advanced integrations will arrive in production vehicles in New Zealand, but the global momentum suggests it's a matter of when, not if. On the digital key front, Apple is also expanding its CarKey functionality, which allows an iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock, lock, and start supported vehicles. The feature is already available in a growing number of models from BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and others. Volvo, for example, recently enabled the feature on the EX30 via a software update. The system uses NFC or Ultra-Wideband (UWB) depending on the car, and allows remote access sharing with family or friends. It's part of Apple's push into secure, smartphone-based convenience that's becoming standard in high-end EVs. While Apple's announcements are largely global, many of the supported brands and models are sold in New Zealand—particularly those from Hyundai, Kia, Volvo, and BMW. The digital key functionality could soon become a standard offering across mid-to-premium vehicles sold locally, especially as over-the-air updates make rollout easier.
