Sanatan Dharma and Jainism are pillars of Indian spirituality: Governor Gehlot
Belagavi: Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Sunday described Sanatan Dharma and Jainism as foundational pillars of Indian spirituality that teach self-purification, the path of truth and non-violence.
He addressed the Bhattarak Sammelan and Jain Community Conference organised by the 1008 Bhattarak Shri Adinath Digambar Jain Samaj Trust at Ainapur in Athani taluk, where he attended as the chief guest.
"Such conferences offer an opportunity to reconnect with moral values and religious traditions in today's fast-paced life," the governor said. He urged the Jain community to take collective steps to provide religious education to the younger generation, preserve pilgrimage sites and hold regular spiritual gatherings.
Recalling the timeless message of Lord Mahavira — Ahimsa Parmo Dharma and Live and Let Live — governor Gehlot said, "In an era of increasing unrest, these values are more relevant than ever." He also lauded the Jain community's contributions to social welfare through initiatives such as feeding the poor, running gaushalas (cow shelters), supporting the elderly, and establishing educational and healthcare institutions.

Jain seer warns of Sallekhan if demands are ignored
The event also saw a strong message from Jain seer Gunadharnandi Munimaharaj, who warned the state govt that he would be compelled to undertake Sallekhan (a Jain ritual of voluntary fasting unto death) if key demands of the Jain community are not addressed within the next 12 months. The seer criticised the Siddaramaiah-led govt for neglecting the community in welfare schemes and urged the creation of a separate development corporation for Jains.
He also demanded the announcement of a dedicated pilgrimage scheme for Jain women to visit Sammed Shikharji in Jharkhand.
"If the govt continues to ignore us, I am prepared to go to any extent—even sacrificing my life—for the rights of the community," he declared, also calling for the immediate restoration of scholarships for underprivileged Jain students. Gunadharnandi Munimaharaj further objected to the recent caste census figures, stating that the Jain population is grossly underreported.
"According to us, the Jain population in Karnataka exceeds 20 lakh, but the survey shows only 1.66 lakh.
This is unacceptable and must be rectified," he said.
He also criticised the state's decision to slash the annual development fund for the Jain community from Rs 50 crore to Rs 25 crore, calling it unjust and regressive. MLAs Laxman Savadi, Ganesh Hukkeri, Raju Kage and Abhay Patil, Maharashtra MLA Rajendra Yadraonkar; former MLAs Sanjay Patil, Shrimant Patil, and Veerkumar Patil, Jain community president Sunil Patil and Arihant Udyog Samuh president Uttam Patil were present.

"But my son will not return": Bengaluru stampede victim's family receives ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh
Tumkur (Karnataka) [India], June 9 (ANI): Devraj, father of deceased Manoj Kumar, who died in the Bengaluru stampede incident among 10 others, received ex-gratia worth Rs 25 lakh by the Karnataka government and said that he would use the relief funds for the benefit of his daughter, who still depends on him. He expressed deep sorrow over the demise of his child and said that the financial assistance given to his family wouldn't bring his son back to life. 'I have been given a cheque of Rs 25 lakhs, but my son will not return. I will not use this money for my benefit... I will put it in the account of my daughter and her mother and keep the money for her future,' Devraj told ANI. Earlier, Tumkur Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Subha Kalyan said that the father of the deceased Manoj Kumar was given ex-gratia worth Rs 25 lakh from the Chief Minister's relief fund. '11 people lost their lives, one of them was Manoj Kumar from Tumkur district. Today, we received an order from the CM's office to immediately disburse a relief amount of Rs 25 lakh to his father, Devraj. We have handed him the cheque from the CM relief fund,' Kalyan told ANI. The DM stated that the deceased was a top student with over 85 per cent marks in Karnataka SSLC and was slated to go abroad to secure a job. 'He (the father) shared that he had a lot of dreams for his son, who was a topper and had scored more than 85 per cent in SSLC. He (the son) was slated to go to a foreign country for job opportunities. It is unfortunate that dreams, which a father carries, will not see the light of day,' she added. Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede in Bengaluru to Rs 25 lakh each. Earlier, the government had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara has said that the details regarding the Bengaluru stampede incident will emerge after the probe concludes. 'Everything will be known after investigation, including who said what, what statements were given earlier, when, and by whom,' Parameshwara told reporters here. Meanwhile, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday said that a commission has been formed that is currently conducting an inquiry into the Bengaluru stampede incident, where 11 people had lost their lives on June 4 during RCB's IPL victory celebrations. He refrained from commenting on the matter, noting that the state's Home Minister would provide a detailed response.'The commission is conducting an inquiry. I will not say much. The Home Minister will reply,' Shivakumar said. Moreover, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said the government is seriously considering moving the city's cricket stadium to a new location to prevent such incidents in the future. Speaking to the media, Siddaramaiah expressed deep personal pain over the tragedy, confirmed that the government is contemplating long-term solutions, and said that the government can shift the stadium to a different place. 'The government will look into shifting the cricket stadium to another location,' he said.'Such an unpleasant incident should not happen under any government. Personally, this incident has hurt me and the government,' he added. 'Five police officers have been suspended in this case. Karnataka's new IT policy to be finalised around July: Priyank Kharge

HC orders restoration ofpower at SP MP's house
Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court has directed to restore the electricity connection at the residence of Samajwadi Party MP of Sambhal Zia Ur Rehman Barq which was disconnected in Dec 2024. Passing above directions to Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited, the court also stayed the final assessment order imposing on him electricity charges of Rs. 1.91 crores for a period of 4,138 days upon the allegation of unauthorised use of electricity. Hearing a writ petition filed by Zia Ur Rehman, a division bench, comprising Justice Saumitra Dayal Singh and Justice Sandeep Jain fixed July 2 for the next hearing of the case. Barq had moved the HC against the assessment order on the ground that the same was passed entirely without jurisdiction as it imposed an assessment for over 12 years, when Section 126(5) of the Electricity Act only allowed imposition of charges for a maximum of 12 months in cases where the period of unauthorized usage was non-determinable. It was also contended that the final assessment order also demanded payment of electricity duty and compounding charges, which the authority had no jurisdiction to impose. Apart from above, it was also argued that by breaching the statutory period of assessment, an arbitrary demand of Rs 1.91 crore had been raised and that the petitioner cannot be made to deposit 50% of such illegal demand to maintain an appeal. Fixing July, 2, 2025, for next hearing, the court in its order dated June 4 stayed the final assessment subject to the petitioner depositing Rs 6 lakh within two weeks. It also directed the restoration of the electricity connection of the petitioner, subject to the timely payment of future bills. As per the statement of executive engineer, UPPCL in Sambhal, two meters at Barq's residence were found showing zero readings for the last six months and the units consumed did not exceed 100 in any of the remaining months last year. However, during the inspection, it was allegedly found that electricity consumption in his house exceeded 16 kilowatts daily, despite the sanctioned connection being only 4 kilowatts.
