Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court has directed to restore the electricity connection at the residence of Samajwadi Party MP of Sambhal Zia Ur Rehman Barq which was disconnected in Dec 2024.
Passing above directions to Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited, the court also stayed the final assessment order imposing on him electricity charges of Rs. 1.91 crores for a period of 4,138 days upon the allegation of unauthorised use of electricity.
Hearing a writ petition filed by Zia Ur Rehman, a division bench, comprising Justice Saumitra Dayal Singh and Justice Sandeep Jain fixed July 2 for the next hearing of the case.
Barq had moved the HC against the assessment order on the ground that the same was passed entirely without jurisdiction as it imposed an assessment for over 12 years, when Section 126(5) of the Electricity Act only allowed imposition of charges for a maximum of 12 months in cases where the period of unauthorized usage was non-determinable.
It was also contended that the final assessment order also demanded payment of electricity duty and compounding charges, which the authority had no jurisdiction to impose.
Apart from above, it was also argued that by breaching the statutory period of assessment, an arbitrary demand of Rs 1.91 crore had been raised and that the petitioner cannot be made to deposit 50% of such illegal demand to maintain an appeal.
Fixing July, 2, 2025, for next hearing, the court in its order dated June 4 stayed the final assessment subject to the petitioner depositing Rs 6 lakh within two weeks. It also directed the restoration of the electricity connection of the petitioner, subject to the timely payment of future bills.
As per the statement of executive engineer, UPPCL in Sambhal, two meters at Barq's residence were found showing zero readings for the last six months and the units consumed did not exceed 100 in any of the remaining months last year. However, during the inspection, it was allegedly found that electricity consumption in his house exceeded 16 kilowatts daily, despite the sanctioned connection being only 4 kilowatts.

Mukesh Ambani gives Rs 1510000000 ‘Guru Dakshina' to…, he didn't take admission in IIT-Bombay because…

Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director, Mukesh Ambani, has announced an unconditional grant of Rs 151 crore to the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai, his alma mater from the 1970s. On Friday, Ambani spent over three hours at the institute, formerly known as the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), attending an event to unveil Divine Scientist , the biography of Professor MM Sharma. When speaking of 'Guru Dakshina', Ambani announced the unconditional grant of Rs 151 crore to ICT according to the instructions of Prof. Sharma. Why Didn't Mukesh Ambani Choose IIT-Bombay? Ambani said, 'Coming to the UDCT campus always feels like visiting a sacred temple. Professor Sharma, I honor you as my most respected teacher, my guide, and a source of inspiration.' Praising Patil, he added, 'Writing about the life of a great personality like Sharma is an immensely challenging task.' Talking about his decision, Ambani said, 'I chose UDCT over IIT-Bombay.' He shared that his decision became firm after attending Sharma's first lecture. 'I realized he was an alchemist not of metals, but of minds. He possesses the ability to transform curiosity into knowledge, knowledge into commercial value, and both knowledge and commercial value into everlasting wisdom.' Ambani credited Professor Sharma for the growth of India's chemical industry and referred to him as the 'National Guru.' Prof. Sharma impressed upon the policymakers that the only way for India to grow was to unshackle Indian industry from license-permit-raj which will allow Indian players to build scale, reduce dependence on imports and compete globally. 'Like my father Dhirubhai Ambani, he had a burning desire to change Indian industry from scarcity to global leadership,' said Ambani. He further added, 'These two bold visionaries believed that science and technology, in alliance with private entrepreneurship, would open the floodgates of prosperity.' (With Inputs From ANI)

5-km tunnel to link Mahipalpur to Mandela Marg, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta announces approval; check design and structure here

NEW DELHI: Chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Sunday that the national capital was reaping the benefits of the double-engine govt as the Centre had approved a plan for a 5-km tunnel that is expected to balance traffic between south Delhi and NCR. The tunnel, from Shiv Murti-Mahipalpur (Dwarka expressway) to Nelson Mandela Road (Vasant Kunj), will reduce congestion on multiple routes and create a signal-free corridor. The CM said that after a recent meeting with Union minister Nitin Gadkari, projects worth Rs 24,000 crore that are aimed at streamlining traffic and reducing pollution in Delhi and its adjoining areas, were approved. Among them is the 5-kilometre tunnel, which will be constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at an estimated cost of Rs 3,500 crore. The tunnel will have two underground tubes - one each for up and down traffic. Each tube will have three lanes. The tunnel will also have electro-mechanical systems, ventilation, fire safety, CCTV surveillance, control rooms, emergency exits and cross-passages. She said that the construction of the tunnel will significantly ease traffic congestion on Nelson Mandela Road (Vasant Kunj), Mahipalpur and Rangpuri. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo It will also reduce the traffic load on Dhaula Kuan, Rao Tula Ram Marg, and National Highway 48 in the Mahipalpur area. South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said that the tunnel will be a blessing for people in the area as it will offer a direct, signal-free atlernative between south Delhi, Dwarka and Gurgaon. The tunnel is expected to help in eliminating traffic jams on NH-48 during peak hours. This tunnel will be a key connector between central/east Delhi and multiple major expressways and highways, including the Delhi Expressway (NE-5), NH-44, NH-10, Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48), and Delhi-Dehradun Expressway (NH-709B) via the Urban Extension Road (UER) and Dwarka Expressway, Bidhuri said. This will lead to smoother traffic across these routes and a significant reduction in pollution levels, he added. The chief minister said that all technical and formal requirements for the project are in their final stages, and work is expected to start early next year. Calling this project the "foundation for the Delhi of the future," Gupta said that the tunnel will give a new direction to Delhi's infrastructure and bring relief to millions. "We are committed to making Delhi congestion-free and clean," she said. The tunnel project ends at the upcoming intersection at Shiv Murti on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. Officials said those heading towards Gurgaon can take the left turn to join the expressway, while others can seamlessly get on to the Dwarka Expressway to head towards Manesar or Chandigarh.
