Dwarka Expressway, UER-II: PM Modi inaugurates highway projects in Delhi to ease congestion, speed travel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two National Highway projects in the national capital: the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and a major stretch of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). The projects, developed at a combined cost of nearly Rs 11,000 crore are aimed at easing traffic congestion in Delhi and improving connectivity with surrounding areas.
The inauguration was attended by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The 10.1-km Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway was built at a cost of about Rs 5,360 crore. The section will provide connectivity to Yashobhoomi convention centre, the Delhi Metro's Blue and Airport lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station, and the Dwarka bus depot. It will also decongest NH-48 by providing an alternative route to the existing Delhi-Gurugram highway. The Expressway also has 8-lane wide tunnel which is 3.6 km long.
The expressway's Delhi portion has been divided into two packages: 5.9 km from Shiv Murti intersection to the Road Under Bridge at Dwarka Sector-21, and 4.2 km from Dwarka Sector-21 to the Delhi-Haryana border. The Haryana section of the expressway, about 19 km long, was inaugurated by the Prime Minister in March 2024.
Alongside, PM Modi also inaugurated the 66 km-long Alipur to Dichaon Kalan stretch of UER-II, along with new links to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 5,580 crore, the project is expected to divert heavy traffic away from Delhi's Inner and Outer Ring Roads and reduce pressure on congested points such as Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan and NH-09. It will provide direct connectivity to outer Delhi areas such as Narela, Bawana, Mundka and Najafgarh. UER-II was constructed using 10 lakh metric tonnes of inert material from the Bhalswa and Ghazipur landfills.
According to officials, the new spurs will provide direct access to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, improve connectivity to industrial hubs, and facilitate faster movement of goods across the National Capital Region.

Rs 6,487 crore sanctioned so far for electrification of 13.59 lakh households

The government has approved works worth Rs 6,487 crore under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to electrify 13.59 lakh households across the country, the Parliament was informed on Monday. The move is aimed at ensuring that every family, even in the remotest corners, has access to electricity, Minister of State for Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, said in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha. The RDSS focuses on covering left-out households based on surveys conducted by utilities. These include Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) families under PM-JANMAN, tribal households under Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DA-JGUA), Scheduled Caste families under PM-AJAY, and households in remote and border areas under the Vibrant Village Programme. Alongside grid connections, the government is promoting renewable energy solutions. Under the New Solar Power Scheme, projects worth Rs 50 crore have been sanctioned to provide off-grid solar power to 9,961 households as of June 30. This comes after the major success of the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA), launched in October 2017. The scheme closed on March 31, 2022, after providing electricity to around 2.86 crore households across India. Uttar Pradesh led the way, electrifying 91.8 lakh households. Bihar followed with 32.5 lakh, while Madhya Pradesh (19.8 lakh), Rajasthan (21.2 lakh), and Odisha (24.5 lakh) also achieved remarkable progress. Smaller states made significant strides too -- Sikkim electrified 14,900 households, Mizoram 27,970, and Himachal Pradesh 12,891, ensuring even remote hill regions were not left behind. Other major contributors were Assam (23.2 lakh), Jharkhand (17.3 lakh), Maharashtra (15.1 lakh), West Bengal (7.3 lakh), and Chhattisgarh (7.9 lakh). Naik said the government is committed to providing electricity to every willing household. He added that a reliable and sustainable power supply is not only vital for improving the quality of life but also for boosting education, healthcare, and economic opportunities in rural and tribal regions.

Foreign liabilities of MFs rose 19.9% to $30.5 bn in 2024-25: RBI survey

Domestic mutual fund industry's foreign liabilities surged 19.9 per cent to $30.5 billion, in market value terms during financial year 2025, primarily driven by an increase in units issued to non-residents, a Reserve Bank of India survey showed. Among major countries, non-residents of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) held the largest share in mutual fund (MF) units, both in terms of face value (21.2 per cent) as well as at market value (20.2 per cent) during fiscal 2025. In face value terms, foreign liabilities in units of MFs held by non-residents of UAE increased by 32.8 per cent to Rs 3,305 crore in FY25, while in market value terms, they rose by 28 per cent to Rs 11,508 crore. The non-residents of other countries that own a large share of domestic MF units, in face value terms, include the United States of America (USA) – 11.2 per cent, the United Kingdom (UK) – 10.8, and Singapore – 6.6 per cent. The survey showed that overseas assets of MFs declined by 5.6 per cent and stood at $8.3 billion in March 2025, due to lower holdings of foreign equity securities. As a result, the net foreign liabilities of MFs increased to $22.2 billion in March 2025 from $16.6 billion a year ago. The findings are based on the RBI's survey of Foreign Liabilities and Assets of the Mutual Funds showed. The survey covered 45 Indian MFs and their Asset Management Companies (AMCs), which held or acquired foreign assets or liabilities during 2024-25 or in the preceding years. It showed that over 95 per cent of the overseas equity investment of domestic mutual funds (MFs) were concentrated in the USA (64.4 per cent), Luxembourg (19.7 per cent), and Ireland (11 per cent). Foreign liabilities of AMCs increased by 16.8 per cent and stood at $7.5 billion in March 2025, on the back of higher inward direct investment. Residents in Japan, Canada and the UK together accounted for over 83 per cent of FDI (foreign direct investment) among Indian AMCs.

Results of BEST credit society polls today; first test for alliance of Thackeray cousins

Polling for the BEST Employees' Co-operative Credit Society elections concluded on Monday and counting of votes are scheduled for Tuesday. The election drew unusual political attention as it marked the first joint contest by Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The two parties, contesting under the 'Utkarsh' panel, have fielded candidates for all 21 seats—18 from the Sena (UBT), two from the MNS, and one from the SC/ST Employees' Welfare Association. Their main challenger is a panel backed by the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, who currently control the state government. The election is widely seen as a litmus test for the Thackeray cousins' renewed alliance, ahead of a series of municipal and local body polls due in Maharashtra in the upcoming months. Even as leaders of both parties have admitted that the MNS does not have a strong presence within the BEST undertaking, the alliance provides a platform for coordination and a trial run before larger electoral battles. The polls were held under the shadow of government scrutiny into the functioning of the credit society over alleged irregularities. The Sena (UBT)–MNS front has termed the inquiries as 'politically motivated pressure tactics'. The BEST credit society has been under the control of undivided Sena in the past and Sena UBT since the past a couple of years after the split in the Sena. Adding to the controversy, MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande on Monday alleged that rival groups were distributing cash to influence the outcome. In a video shared on X, Deshpande claimed that a member of the credit society received a pamphlet with an envelope containing two Rs 500 notes. 'This game is to buy votes,' he alleged, while adding that a formal complaint would be lodged with the election officer. Despite these charges, polling was reported to be largely smooth. The BEST credit society is significant as its members are employees of the civic transport and power utility, and the cooperative's influence extends into Mumbai's political and civic spheres.
