Nigeria mosque attack death toll rises to 50, lawmaker says
Gunmen stormed the mosque in the town of Unguwan Mantau, in Katsina state, during morning prayers on Tuesday, according to lawmaker Aminu Ibrahim.
'The bandits killed 30 people and burnt 20 others during attacks on several villages,' Ibrahim told the state parliament on Wednesday.
There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
Such attacks are common in Nigeria's northwestern and north-central regions, where local herders and farmers often clash over limited access to land and water. An attack last month in north-central Nigeria killed 150 people.
The prolonged conflict has become deadlier in recent years, with authorities and analysts warning that more herdsmen are taking up arms.
On Tuesday the Katsina state commissioner, Nasir Mu'azu, said the army and police have deployed in the area of Unguwan Mantau to prevent further attacks, adding that gunmen often hide among the crops in farms during the rainy season to carry out assaults on communities.
He said the mosque attack was likely in retaliation for a raid by Unguwan Mantau townspeople at the weekend when several gunmen were ambushed and killed.
Dozens of armed groups take advantage of the limited security presence in Nigeria's mineral-rich regions, carrying out attacks on villages and along major roads.
The farmers accuse the herders, mostly of Fulani origin, of grazing their livestock on their farms and destroying their produce. The herders insist that the lands are grazing routes that were first backed by law in 1965, five years after the country gained its independence.
Separate from the conflict between farming and herding communities, Nigeria is battling to contain Boko Haram insurgents in the northeast, where some 35,000 civilians have been killed and more than two million displaced, according to the United Nations.

Police investigating ‘suspicious death' of man at Scarborough Town Centre
Toronto police provided an update on the fatal shooting inside a washroom at Scarborough Town Centre. Toronto police are investigating after a man in his 20s was found dead along with a firearm in a washroom at Scarborough Town Centre on Thursday afternoon. Acting Insp. Baheer Sarvanandan said shoppers discovered the man in a family washroom near the lower-level food court and notified mall security, who then reported the incident to police. Five dead, 36 injured in bomb attack on Colombia air base

(AFP) Five people were killed and dozens were injured when a vehicle bomb targeted a military base on a busy street in the Colombian city of Cali on Thursday, local authorities said. Police said the bomb had targeted the Marco Fidel Suarez Military Aviation School. 'There was a thunderous sound of something exploding near the air base,' 65-year-old eyewitness Hector Fabio Bolanos told AFP. 'There were so many injured people,' he said. 'Many houses were damaged in front of the base.' Several buildings and a school were evacuated. Cali mayor Alejandro Eder said preliminary reports indicated at least five people were killed and 36 people were injured. He announced a ban on large trucks entering the city, fearing further explosions. Eyewitness Alexis Atizabal, 40, indicated that civilians may be among the dead. 'There were fatalities among people passing by on the avenue,' he said. It was not immediately clear who was responsible, but regional governor Dilian Francisca Toro called it a 'terrorist attack.' 'Terrorism will not defeat us,' she said. In June, leftist guerrillas claimed responsibility for a wave of bomb and gun attacks in and around Cali that killed seven people. The group, the Central General Staff (EMC), rejected a 2016 peace deal and has upped operations ahead of elections in 2026.
