UFC Announces Massive UFC Atlanta Main and Co-Main Event with Kamaru Usman and Rose Namajunas: Everything You Need to Know

Yahoo26-04-2025

As we approach the end of the first half of 2025, UFC Fight Nights have been a mixed bag of exciting undercards, a couple of notable headliners, and plenty of fights designed to keep the roster busy. Admittedly, while not every event has been must-see, these non-pay-per-view events serve as a proving ground for up-and-comers and a last-chance for fading veterans.
UFC President Dana White announced today, through his Instagram live, a stacked UFC Fight Night main event and co-main event set for June 14 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

The headliner will feature former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman returning to the Octagon against surging contender Joaquin Buckley, while the co-main pits two-time strawweight queen Rose Namajunas against rising flyweight Miranda Maverick.

Kamaru Usman steps back into the cage after an 18-month layoff, seeking to snap a three-fight skid that includes a short-notice loss to Khamzat Chimaev at middleweight in 2023.
Once dominant at welterweight with five title defenses, "The Nigerian Nightmare" now faces a pivotal test against Buckley, who has rattled off six straight wins since dropping to welterweight in 2023. Buckley's recent TKO of Colby Covington and viral knockout power make him a dangerous foil for Usman, who must prove he still belongs among the division's elite.
While the welterweight belt will be on the line in a fight between current champion Belal Muhammad and challenger Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315 in May, the Usman-Buckley winner could position themselves for a late-2025 title shot.
The co-main event offers a compelling clash of trajectories at women's flyweight.

Rose Namajunas, a former strawweight champion, aims to rebound from a November 2024 loss to Erin Blanchfield, while Miranda Maverick rides a four-fight win streak into the biggest opportunity of her career.
Namajunas, who, according to Maverick, was once her mentor and training partner, now stands as her hurdle to the top 10. Both women will vie for relevance in a flyweight division set to crown a champion at UFC 315, where Valentina Shevchenko defends her belt against Manon Fiorot.
With six weeks until fight night, the outcomes that will take place in Atlanta could reshape two divisions in one night.

Magomed Ankalaev claims Alex Pereira 'never coming back,' will move on from UFC rematch

Magomed Ankalaev claims Alex Pereira 'never coming back,' will move on from UFC rematch Magomed Ankalaev is sick of waiting for a rematch date that accommodates Alex Pereira and is prepared to move on to something else. After taking the light heavyweight title from Pereira (12-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) by unanimous decision at UFC 313 in March, Ankalaev (21-1-1 MMA, 12-1-1 UFC) said he's been ready and willing for the sequel to be confirmed. He claims multiple dates have been offered, including the UFC 317 headliner during International Fight Week on June 28 in Las Vegas. Still, though, nothing has been finalized, and it appears Ankalaev now thinks it never will be. He bluntly said Sunday on social media he thinks Pereira essentially is retired and won't compete again, and therefore he wants to move on to the next contender. (via X): "Alex (is) done he never coming back," Ankalaev wrote. "Let's move on – June, July, August, I said yes." If the Ankalaev vs. Pereira rematch does not come to fruition, there is multiple potential opponents for his first 205-pound title defense. Former champion Jiri Prochazka is the likely leading candidate, Carlos Ulberg is on a seven-fight winning streak in the weight class and on June 21, ex-champ Jamahal Hill meets Khalil Rountree in the UFC on ABC 8 main event in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Raising awareness of prostate cancer has given me purpose, says Chris Hoy

RAISING awareness of prostate cancer has given Chris Hoy 'a purpose', he has said. One of Scotland's most decorated athletes, Hoy announced his diagnosis last year, shocking the sporting world. But far from slowing down, the 11-time world champion track cyclist and six-time Olympic gold medallist has turned his hand to campaigning, urging more men to be aware of the dangers of the disease. The inbox on his Instagram account, he told the Sunday Times, is 'stacked' with men saying news of his diagnosis had spurred them to get tested and they had managed to catch it early. READ MORE: Orkney prepares to welcome athletes for the ultimate island showdown 'That gives me a huge lift,' he told the newspaper. He works alongside Prostate Cancer UK, which provides an online risk-checking tool that has been used by more than 180,000 men. 'That campaign has saved lives,' he said. 'And you know, in all the chaos and all the fear and all the horror of first being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, you can never imagine any positive outcome coming from that situation. 'So to know that there is one has given me a purpose. 'In difficult moments you remind yourself, actually there is a net positive from this whole situation. And I'm lucky because I have a platform.' Since his own diagnosis, it was announced his wife Sarra had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Asked about his wife's illness, Hoy says she 'doesn't talk about it a massive amount'. 'I think she's just determined to try and not allow it to get its feet under the table,' he said. 'It fluctuates, so she gets good days and bad days. 'When the days are difficult, she doesn't ever admit to it, but clearly the thoughts are, 'is this the start of a decline? Is this how it's going to be from now on?' 'It's very difficult, and she's so stoic and strong, and not willing to ask for sympathy.'

'For us, it's to use that as motivation and determination to work all summer to prepare ourselves to make the final step to keep improving so we can achieve our goal. I think that's the way we have to approach it and that's the way we have to look at it.' Despite the season concluding in heartbreak, this year has been a momentous one for Brunson and Ali. The couple welcomed their first child, daughter Jordyn, in July 2024. The Brunsons have been married since 2023.
