(Reuters) -Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian said his wife, 23-times Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, had initially tried to talk him out of investing in women's soccer due to what she saw as a lack of infrastructure in women's sports.
Ohanian acquired a 10% stake in Women's Super League champions Chelsea last week. His investment of 20 million pounds ($26.89 million) values the London-based club at about 200 million pounds.
Ohanian was also the largest shareholder in U.S. National Women's Soccer League side Angel City, which he helped launch to great fanfare in 2020, before it was sold for $250 million in 2024.
"Serena actually tried to talk me out of it (starting a women's soccer team in U.S.), because I think she had been so exposed to the infrastructure around women's sports," Ohanian told CNN on Thursday.
"Because of her lived experience ... because she had to kick down a lot of doors."
Ohanian said there was huge growth potential for Chelsea, who completed a treble of domestic trophies last week following their sixth straight WSL title.
"I think a lot of well-intentioned people historically have supported women's sports in a way that ... actually held it back because it was viewed too much as charity. They led with things like, 'Oh, I'm doing this because I have a daughter," he added.
"I'm glad the discourse has now shifted ... but there's still so much more work to be done, and I really believe that this club could and should be the first billion dollar club in women's sports."

Dubai's MBS Global eyes Johor for tech, finance investment expansion

KUALA LUMPUR: Dubai-based MBS Global Holdings, which manages over US$14 billion in assets worldwide, has expressed strong interest in positioning Johor as its next strategic investment hub in Southeast Asia. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the state government held a high-level meeting with MBS Global on May 29, in Kuala Lumpur, where the firm outlined its investment appetite in key sectors such as digital technology, Islamic digital banking, green innovation and real estate. "MBS Global's interest is a strong signal of Johor's rising profile among global institutional investors. We view this as a potential catalyst for high-impact investments that can generate quality jobs and spur inclusive economic growth," he said. The firm is no stranger to ambitious ventures. Its recent US$8.8 billion investment to develop a blockchain-based financial hub in the Maldives is projected to create over 16,000 jobs by 2030. Onn Hafiz said Johor's appeal has been further strengthened by the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) initiatives, which offer cross-border advantages and regional market access to international players. "The Johor government is committed to turning investment into real benefits for the people, not just in figures, but in the form of job creation, technology transfer and sustainable economic development," he said. MBS Global Holdings' potential entry aligns with Johor's strategy to attract future-driven industries and long-term capital. It is also in line with the state's economic blueprint.

Alcaraz grinds past Shelton to reach Roland Garros last eight

Carlos Alcaraz races across the court to return a shot from Ben Shelton during the French Open fourth round at Roland-Garros. (AP pic) PARIS : Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz won a war of attrition with American 13th seed Ben Shelton to reach the French Open quarter-finals on Sunday. The Spaniard emerged victorious 7-6 (10/8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 after over three hours of blistering serves, power-hitting and drop-shots on Court Philippe Chatrier. 'I think we both have huge respect to each other, we entertained the people well,' Alcaraz said on court. 'He's a really powerful player — he can make any shot… I appreciate the moment that I've shared with him today.' The four-time Grand Slam winner edged a tight first set, which produced only one unconverted break point, at the end of a lengthy tie-break that saw both players have chances to clinch the opener. When Alcaraz finally forced a break against the big-serving Shelton in the second set, it was enough for him to move into a two-set lead. But once again Alcaraz failed to see out a straight-sets victory as Shelton produced two breaks of serve to edge the most open of the four frames. The 22-year-old nonetheless bounced back to gain the advantage in the fourth set, before serving out as dusk descended over centre court. Another American awaits Alcaraz in the last eight after 12th seed Tommy Paul earlier defeated Alexei Popyrin in straight sets. 'I remember that every match that I've played against him he was really tough. He was really difficult,' said Alcaraz of Paul. 'In Grand Slams, in Masters 1000, and all the tournaments I've played against him it wasn't easy at all. I lost a lot, a few matches against him as well. He is in the quarter-finals of another Grand Slam, so his level is really high right now.' Alcaraz leads his series with Paul 4-2, and most recently defeated the 28-year-old in straight sets on the red dirt of Roland Garros at the quarter-final stage of the 2024 Olympic Games.

Sinner sets sights on French Open quarters, Gauff and Andreeva in action

PARIS, June 2 — Jannik Sinner will seek to light up the night session on Monday as the top seed clashes with Andrey Rublev, while Russian starlet Mirra Andreeva will face hitting-partner and ex-compatriot Daria Kasatkina for a place in the French Open quarter-finals. Elsewhere, world number two Coco Gauff will meet Ekaterina Alexandrova in the last 16 and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic will renew his rivalry with Cameron Norrie. Third seeds Alexander Zverev and Jessica Pegula will also take to the court in fourth-round action against Tallon Griekspoor and Lois Boisson, respectively. Italy's Sinner will look to continue his quest to make it three Grand Slam titles in a row when he takes on Russian 17th seed Rublev. The pair have met nine times in their career with Sinner holding the edge with six wins to three, but the former world number five emerged the victor in their only previous meeting at Roland Garros at the same stage in 2022. Sinner retired injured from that encounter but should come into Monday's headline match in fine nick after limiting his time on court so far this tournament by winning all his matches in straight sets. However, his opponent has spent even less time playing after receiving a walkover past France's Arthur Fils in the third round. 'I have to be very careful. Andrey is an incredible player. I have to be focused. He's rested. So let's see what's coming,' said Sinner. Teenager Andreeva will meet Kasatkina — ranked 17 and now playing for Australia after switching allegiance from her native Russia. 'I practised with her here once already, so I think that we practise together every tournament,' said the sixth seed. 'It's going to be an entertaining match, for sure, because I think we both know each other very well. So, you know, I think that it's going to be... pretty tight.' The 18-year-old lost her only previous meeting with Kasatkina in the final at Ningbo last year. 'Let's go to Vegas' Djokovic, a three-time French Open winner, will have the chance to rack up 100 victories at Roland Garros when he faces Britain's Norrie. The 38-year-old Serb sits on a 99-16 win/loss record at the major where he has enjoyed the least success in terms of titles. 'Just that stat alone for me in terms of longevity, something that particularly in the last maybe five to seven years, I was looking forward to try to extend my career,' said Djokovic. 'To try to be playing on the highest level for as long as I possibly can, regardless of the age. And that's what's happening, so I can't be happier than that.' Djokovic beat 81st-ranked Norrie in three sets earlier this month on the red dirt in Geneva on his way to securing a century of ATP titles. Norrie's compatriot and men's fifth seed, Jack Draper, can extend his best-ever run at the French Open by beating a rejuvenated Alexander Bublik in the fourth round. The Kazakh is also enjoying his best performance at Roland Garros, and credited his return to form in recent months to a boozy trip to Las Vegas with his coach. 'He's (Bublik's coach) like, 'Man, if you play like this, we're just going to be out of tennis, of the conversation by Wimbledon',' recounted the former top-20 player. 'I said, 'Okay, let's go to Vegas'. 'Vegas, Vegas, like a Hangover-thing (2009 film) Vegas, yeah.' Last year's German runner-up Zverev completes the men's fourth round as he takes on unseeded Dutchman Griekspoor. Gauff heads up a quartet of American women in the last 16 as the former finalist battles Russian 20th seed Alexandrova, who has reached the second week in Paris for the first time. Australia Open champion and seventh seed Madison Keys competes with 70th-ranked compatriot Hailey Baptiste for a spot in the quarter-finals. US Open finalist Pegula will face world number 361 Boisson — the sole remaining French player and lowest-ranked competitor left in the draw. 'Obviously... (Boisson's) going to have some crazy support,' said the 2024 US Open finalist. 'I think it will be fun. It will be cool to be a part of that.' — AFP
