Soccer-Ohanian says wife Serena Williams was wary of investing in women's soccer

(Reuters) -Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian said his wife, 23-times Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, had initially tried to talk him out of investing in women's soccer due to what she saw as a lack of infrastructure in women's sports.
Ohanian acquired a 10% stake in Women's Super League champions Chelsea last week. His investment of 20 million pounds ($26.89 million) values the London-based club at about 200 million pounds.
Ohanian was also the largest shareholder in U.S. National Women's Soccer League side Angel City, which he helped launch to great fanfare in 2020, before it was sold for $250 million in 2024.
"Serena actually tried to talk me out of it (starting a women's soccer team in U.S.), because I think she had been so exposed to the infrastructure around women's sports," Ohanian told CNN on Thursday.
"Because of her lived experience ... because she had to kick down a lot of doors."
Ohanian said there was huge growth potential for Chelsea, who completed a treble of domestic trophies last week following their sixth straight WSL title.
"I think a lot of well-intentioned people historically have supported women's sports in a way that ... actually held it back because it was viewed too much as charity. They led with things like, 'Oh, I'm doing this because I have a daughter," he added.
"I'm glad the discourse has now shifted ... but there's still so much more work to be done, and I really believe that this club could and should be the first billion dollar club in women's sports."

Alcaraz grinds past Shelton to reach Roland Garros last eight

The Spaniard emerged victorious 7-6 (10/8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 after over three hours of blistering serves, power-hitting and drop-shots on Court Philippe Chatrier. 'I think we both have huge respect to each other, we entertained the people well,' Alcaraz said on court. 'He's a really powerful player — he can make any shot… I appreciate the moment that I've shared with him today.' The four-time Grand Slam winner edged a tight first set, which produced only one unconverted break point, at the end of a lengthy tie-break that saw both players have chances to clinch the opener. When Alcaraz finally forced a break against the big-serving Shelton in the second set, it was enough for him to move into a two-set lead. But once again Alcaraz failed to see out a straight-sets victory as Shelton produced two breaks of serve to edge the most open of the four frames. The 22-year-old nonetheless bounced back to gain the advantage in the fourth set, before serving out as dusk descended over centre court. Another American awaits Alcaraz in the last eight after 12th seed Tommy Paul earlier defeated Alexei Popyrin in straight sets. 'I remember that every match that I've played against him he was really tough. He was really difficult,' said Alcaraz of Paul. 'In Grand Slams, in Masters 1000, and all the tournaments I've played against him it wasn't easy at all. I lost a lot, a few matches against him as well. He is in the quarter-finals of another Grand Slam, so his level is really high right now.' Alcaraz leads his series with Paul 4-2, and most recently defeated the 28-year-old in straight sets on the red dirt of Roland Garros at the quarter-final stage of the 2024 Olympic Games.

Sinner sets sights on French Open quarters, Gauff and Andreeva in action
PARIS, June 2 — Jannik Sinner will seek to light up the night session on Monday as the top seed clashes with Andrey Rublev, while Russian starlet Mirra Andreeva will face hitting-partner and ex-compatriot Daria Kasatkina for a place in the French Open quarter-finals.
