Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Ottawa
The forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud today with a 40 per cent chance of showers and the risk of a thunderstorm. High 25 C with the humidex making it feel like 28.
At 12:40 p.m., a band of heavy rain was moving through Renfrew County near the Ottawa River.
Environment Canada says severe thunderstorms could have wind gusts up to 90 km/h and hail up to 2 cm.
'Isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon. These thunderstorms are expected to move south of the area early this evening,' Environment Canada said.
'When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.'
This is the second straight day a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Ottawa. Some areas of Ottawa saw a thunderstorm on Wednesday afternoon.
Environment Canada's forecast says Ottawa will see partly cloudy conditions tonight with a 40 per cent chance of evening showers. Low 12 C.
Friday will see a mix of sun and cloud. High 24 C.

700 people stranded in northern Sask. community after wildfire blocks road
Social Sharing About 700 people in a small hamlet in northern Saskatchewan are stranded Friday after a wildfire knocked out the only road into their community. Poor internet connection? Patuanak, a hamlet about 500 kilometres north of Saskatoon and 100 kilometres north of recently evacuated Beauval, Sask., is typically only accessible by road via Highway 918. This week the highway was cut off by a wildfire, preventing people from leaving, and blocking direct access to supplies and emergency crews. "Essentially they are safe but they are cut off," said Candyce Paul, emergency management co-ordinator for the English River First Nation, which Patuanak is a part of. "They had lost power once as poles got burned, but SaskPower was quickly able to protect the road enough to restore the power." Speaking from the La Plonge Reserve just outside Beauval, Paul said there isn't any immediate danger to Patuanak from wildfires or heavy smoke. The nearest wildfire, she said, was still around 60 kilometres away. "Medical services are all up there. There's an airport up there. We have a team operating up there as well. Our emergency management team is making preparations for any scenario that comes up." Paul said essentials like pharmaceuticals have been brought in by air, while a team of nurses was able to travel to the community by boat. Many community members with complex medical needs were able to leave before the road was cut off, Paul said, many of them taking refute in Cold Lake, Alta. "The ones that needed to be evacuated, they are 90 per cent out," Paul said. On Friday morning, the English River First Nation emergency management team announced that La Plonge had been fully evacuated. Beauval closes road Meanwhile, the town of Beauval announced it had blocked the road into the community to prevent non-essential personnel from entering. Traffic will still be allowed to exit the community, which is now more than 75 per cent evacuated. The town also announced that the Travelodge in Saskatoon being used as a muster point is now full. Evacuees will be assigned to new hotels.

Montreal weekend weather: Hot and humid days ahead

The weekend is set to start with partly cloudy skies on Saturday with a daytime high of 27 degrees Celsius, slightly above the seasonal daytime high of 25 degrees Celsius, though humidity won't be a factor. Things are expected to change on Sunday when a low-pressure system is slated to swoop in, bringing approximately 6 millimetres of rain in the afternoon. Although the daytime high is expected to reach 32 degrees Celsius, it may feel like 40 with the humidex. The start of the week should also bring precipitation with a risk of scattered thunderstorms. Montreal could see up to 10 millimetres of rain, with a daytime high of 27 degrees Celsius. Temperatures should stay steady at 27 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Montreal is expected to get a break from the rain, with sun and cloud in the forecast for both days.

Neighbouring regions, including Kenora, are under a severe thunderstorm watch. A heat warning remains in effect for Winnipeg, southeastern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario for one last day on Friday. A cold front passing Friday night will bring relief and cooler temperatures in the low to mid 20s by Saturday. Until then, thunderstorms can't be ruled out late Friday afternoon or early evening in Winnipeg and much of the south. Meanwhile, northeastern Manitoba is under an unusual severe thunderstorm watch Friday. ECCC said thunderstorms that developed there this morning will move through the region into northern Ontario by Friday evening. Most central and northern regions are also under an air quality warning or special air quality statement Friday. The weather agency said smoke moving through the region should improve Friday night.
