Frank confident Spurs will be 'incredibly competitive' against PSG

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank said Tuesday he is expecting his team to be "incredibly competitive" in his first game in charge against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. The former Brentford boss could not have been given a tougher opening match in the Spurs dug-out, facing a PSG side who romped to their maiden Champions League title with a 5-0 thumping of Inter Milan in May. "I am convinced we will be incredibly competitive tomorrow," Frank told reporters ahead of Wednesday's game in Udine. "Paris are, of course, further down the line in terms of their peak performance, but we are ready for the match... "For everyone involved in Tottenham it's a massive game, a big challenge and a great opportunity. We will definitely embrace it and give everything. We are playing an ok team, but we are ready for it." Tottenham ended a 17-year wait for a major trophy with victory over Manchester United in last season's Europa League final. But it was not enough to save then-coach Ange Postecoglou from the sack after they stumbled to a 17th-placed finish in the Premier League. Dane Frank was brought in with the job to achieve some consistency, after taking Brentford to a top-10 finish in the Premier League in his seventh campaign at the helm. "Thomas Frank has come in and brought a lot of energy," said experienced defender Ben Davies. "The lads are really enjoying working under him, and it's very exciting. We're hoping the work we've put in so far will pay dividends tomorrow night." It will be Spurs' first outing since forward Son Heung-min's departure for LAFC in the United States, while James Maddison is also absent after suffering a serious knee injury during a pre-season friendly. "We feel his loss but the senior guys have to be there to support everyone," Davies said of Son's exit. "We need to make sure we, as experienced players, stand up and make sure we let every player in this team be the player they are." Striker Dominic Solanke is fit to play following injury, however, Frank said midfielder Yves Bissouma had been left out for "disciplinary reasons". Spurs have signed Mohammed Kudus from West Ham to bolster their attacking options and he could be in line to make his debut against PSG. Eberechi Eze has been heavily linked with a possible move across London from Crystal Palace, but Frank declined to comment on the club's reported interest in the England winger. jc/nf

WNBA ratings and attendance are still strong despite top stars missing games with injuries

NEW YORK (AP) — Even with many of its top stars sidelined, the WNBA has still had strong ratings and attendance numbers this season. Injuries have kept Caitlin Clark, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier and Angel Reese out, but that hasn't dampened fan interest in the league. ESPN games are up slightly over last season and games on ABC are up 17%. Attendance has also still been strong, thanks to the addition of the Golden State Valkyries this season, who have sold out all of their home games, averaging more than 18,000 fans. Still, it's not all been rosy for the league with negative attention coming towards the WNBA with a number of sex toys being thrown on the court at various arenas over a two-week span. That has subsided over the last few days. For the most part, even without their stars, those teams have been able to play at a high level. Minnesota has won all three games without Collier — the MVP frontrunner — who is sidelined with a right ankle sprain, to remain in first place in the standings, increasing their lead to 6 1/2 games over New York and Atlanta. Indiana has gone 6-2 over its last eight games without Clark, who has been out for nearly a month with a right groin injury. She is progressing from the injury but still is not practicing. The second-year guard told Sue Bird on her podcast that she feels a level of 'responsibility' to play, knowing that so many people have been drawn to the league because of her. 'I think that's definitely been hard. I'm going to go to every road game no matter what, whether I'm playing or not. It's hard because obviously I do feel this responsibility of being out there and playing,' Clark said. New York has been up and down without Stewart, who said she plans to be back by the end of the month from a bone bruise in her right knee. Honoring Sue The Seattle Storm will unveil a statue of Sue Bird on Saturday before the team faces Phoenix on Sunday. Seattle is the first franchise in WNBA history to dedicate a statue to a former player. Early next month, Bird will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Power poll rankings Minnesota remained the No. 1 team in the poll with Atlanta and New York still behind the Lynx. Phoenix and Las Vegas followed the Liberty. The Aces are riding a four-game winning streak. Indiana, Los Angeles and Golden State are next. Seattle fell to ninth as the Storm have lost five straight games. Washington and Dallas came after the Storm with Chicago and Connecticut rounding out the poll. Player of the week A'ja Wilson of Las Vegas was the AP player of the week after averaging 25.3 points, 13 rebounds and 3.7 assists to help the Aces win all three of their games last week. She had the first 30-point, 20-rebound game in league history in a win over Connecticut on Sunday. Other players receiving votes included Kelsey Plum of Los Angeles and Alyssa Thomas of Phoenix. Game of the week New York at Minnesota, Saturday. The Lynx beat the Liberty in New York last Sunday and now don't play again until the two teams tip off in Minnesota. New York has back-to-back games in Los Angeles and Las Vegas before heading to Minnesota. ___ AP WNBA:

Alvaro Morata joins Como on loan from Milan after Galatasaray spell cut short

Alvaro Morata has joined Como on loan from AC Milan after cutting short his stay at Galatasaray. The Spain international joins Como on a season-long loan arrangement with an obligation to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign. The 32-year-old joined Galatasaray in January on a 12-month loan deal, while the Turkish club held an option to make the move permanent. Galatasaray said in a statement that Milan would pay a loan termination fee of €5million (£4.3m), while Morata had 'waived his receivables (wage) amounting to €651,562 (£562,982)' to secure his exit. Como head coach Cesc Fabregas, a former club and international team-mate of Morata, said: 'I've known Alvaro for many years and I've always admired the way he plays and the way he carries himself. 'He's an intelligent striker who has delivered in the biggest moments and a teammate who lifts everyone around him. We're so happy to have him here at Como.' Advertisement Morata has previously had multiple spells at Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Juventus, along with 18 months at Chelsea. He joined Milan last summer, making 25 appearances in all competitions, registering six goals and providing two assists in the first half of 2024-25. The Athletic reported in February that Arsenal had expressed an interest in signing Morata following Gabriel Jesus' injury on a loan deal, prior to his move to Galatasaray. The striker scored seven goals and provided three assists in 16 games at the Istanbul-based club, helping his side win the Turkish Super Lig. Morata has also scored 37 goals in 86 games for Spain and captained the side to winning the European Championship in 2024. He also came off the bench during his side's defeat in the Nations League final to Portugal on June 8. In their first season back in the Italian top flight in 21 years, Fabregas guided Como to a tenth-place finish. (Eric Verhoeven/Soccrates/Getty Images) Spot the pattern.
