In a major breakthrough against organized crime, Haryana Police's Special Task Force (STF), in collaboration with
Delhi Police
's Special Cell, eliminated notorious gangster Romil Vohra in an early morning encounter on the Delhi-Gurugram-Faridabad route on Tuesday.
Vohra, carrying a bounty of Rs 3 lakh on his head, was wanted in several high-profile criminal cases, including triple murder case of Yamunanagar and targeted killings.
Addressing a press conference at the Kurukshetra SP Office, STF SP Vikrant Bhushan and Kurukshetra SP Nitish Aggarwal detailed the high-stakes operation. Romil Vohra, of Ashok Vihar, Yamunanagar, had been evading arrest for a long time. He was believed to be planning a major crime in northern Haryana and Delhi when police acted on a tip-off.

The SPs shared that the STF central unit, led by sub-inspector (SI) Rakesh Kumar, in coordination with the STF Karnal unit, swiftly shared intelligence with Delhi Police's counter intelligence special cell. Acting on the information, inspector Manjeet Singh of Delhi Police and his team launched a joint operation with STF Haryana. Police barricaded routes leading from Gurugram and Faridabad towards Delhi in the early hours, they said.

During the interception, Romil Vohra opened fire at the police. In the retaliatory action, STF SI Rohan and Delhi Special Cell SI Praveen sustained injuries, as did Romil Vohra. All three were rushed to the hospital, where Romil was declared dead. The injured officers are under treatment and in stable condition, said the STF SP Bhushan.
Romil Vohra: A hardcore criminal
Romil Vohra was a listed most-wanted gangster involved in at least eight heinous cases, including the Kheri Lakha Singh triple murder (on December 26, 2024) of Yamunanagar district involving disputes over liquor business and the recent murder (on June 13, 2025) of liquor contractor Shantanu in Shahabad, Kurukshetra district.
The STF SP said Vohra's criminal activities included planned murders, illegal arms supply, organized violence, and gang operations across state lines.
He had long eluded arrest, and his neutralization marks a significant win for law enforcement agencies, the SP said.
STF nabs 10 in Shantanu murder case
In another success, STF teams from Ambala and Karnal, under the supervision of DSP Aman Kumar, arrested 10 individuals linked to the Shantanu murder case.
The accused played active roles in the murder conspiracy, reconnaissance, shooting, and logistical/financial support. While five were arrested earlier last week, the remaining five were apprehended on June 23 and 24. All ten have been presented before the court and are under police remand.
"Criminals must choose: Leave crime or leave Haryana"
SP Vikrant Bhushan emphasized the STF's ongoing commitment to dismantling criminal networks in the state.
'This operation is part of a sustained campaign against organized crime. As per the directions of chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, we are taking strict action. Criminals now have only two choices—give up crime or leave Haryana,' he said.
Warning to youth: Stay away from gangsters' social media
Kurukshetra SP Nitish Aggarwal issued a strong advisory to youth, urging them not to follow or engage with gangsters on social media.
"Following or glorifying criminals online sends a dangerous message and can lead to legal consequences," he cautioned. He added that anyone found promoting or engaging with gangster-related content would be subject to strict action under the law.

RAIPUR: A murder trail starting with the discovery of a disabled man's body encased in cement, put in a suitcase within a steel trunk and dumped in a residential area of Chhattisgarh's capital city led investigators to Delhi airport Tuesday, where they arrested a married couple suspected to have masterminded the crime. Preliminary interrogation suggests suspects, Raipur lawyer Ankit Upadhyay and his wife, conspired to murder Kishore Paikra over a land brokerage dispute, Raipur SSP Lal Umed Singh said. Ankit, whose father is a retired ASI of Chhattisgarh police, and his wife were identified through CCTV footage from the area where Paikra's body was found. The footage purportedly shows a car entering Raipur's DD Nagar Monday, two men alighting and opening the boot to take out the trunk bearing the body. A woman with her face covered is seen trailing the car on a two-wheeler. The car had a possibly fudged number plate, police said. Investigators have learnt that the victim, who needed a wheelchair for mobility and lived in Handipara's HMT Chowk, had sold a plot of land in Mohadi village with Ankit's help for Rs 50 lakh but had received Rs 20 lakh less than the agreed price. Ankit, of Changorabhatha village, allegedly had Paikra murdered when the latter threatened to file a police complaint against him. The arrested couple was brought to Raipur late on Tuesday. TNN

Although no commercially approved mining sites existed in Nurpur Bedi of the Ropar division, large-scale sand and gravel extraction persisted, raising serious concerns about environmental degradation and public safety. Mining department officials stated that only four Commercial Mining Sites (CMS) were approved in the Anandpur Sahib division, including Nangran Kalmot, Chandpur, Majari, and Bhanglan, while two Public Mining Sites (PMS) were approved in Ahlowal and Mahlewal of Ropar division. Sources indicated that illegal operations were particularly active at night near Haripur Plata, where approximately 20 stone crushers operated. These crushers were reportedly supplied by unauthorised mining activities; however, there was no control over illegal mining in the area. Despite repeated concerns and previous incidents, enforcement action remained limited, casting doubt on the effectiveness of regulatory mechanisms. During the day, it becomes clearly visible at the site that the miners have extracted the sand and gravel at large scale, up to 40 feet deep. Only a week ago, some villagers have confiscated the machines and handed them over to the police, but no action was taken. Later, the machines involved in illegal mining were released," said Amandeep Singh of Bhalan village. "Large scale illegal mining has put our village in danger, especially during floods. Floodwater will soon erode the remaining area, which has turned vulnerable. Mining is usually carried out in land that belong to some villager, who along with village panchayat are paid good amount of money," said a young resident Mandeep Singh from Bhalan village. Commenting on the issue, district mining officer Tushar Goyal said, "We have continuously taken actions against illegal miners, and our teams, along with the police, remain vigilant. Only four commercial mining sites are approved and fall under the Anandpur Sahib area in the district, while two public mining sites are in the Ropar division. However, mining is not permitted at night. We will conduct raids at these sites to investigate any illegal mining. " Goyal added, "Two of the six piers of Agampur village were damaged in the past and tenders for its repair were being floated. The damage was due to several reasons, including illegal mining. We are constructing creek that will allow river water to cross through all six piers". Ropar SSP Gulneet Khurana added, "We have recently taken action against illegal mining in Bhalan village, although several cases have been registered in the past. No recent illegal mining complaints have been received, although we typically receive noise pollution complaints at some crushers. The pollution board is authorised to address noise pollution. We will inspect the aforementioned sites to counter illegal mining. "
