Beyond Bourbon Street: A Whirlwind Week in New Orleans

Beyond Bourbon Street: A Whirlwind Week in New Orleans

Yahoo16-05-2025
New Orleans is one of the most culturally significant cities in the United States, and it's been on my must-visit list for years, inspired by some of my favorite films (Interview With the Vampire; A Streetcar Named Desire, Princess and the Frog) and L.A. friends who fell in love with it and moved there. Many visit for the revelry of Mardi Gras in February —but the beads, booze and tourists can overshadow some of the city's warmth and wonder. There are other events to plan trips around, Jazz Fest which just wrapped up, for example, but I chose to go during the French Quarter Festival, which focuses on local music and food. With virtually every major restaurant in the area participating and serving the region's signature dishes — from crawfish and po-boys (Acme Oyster House) to alligator nuggets, beignets (Café Du Monde) and jambalaya — popping in and out of this particular event makes for a multifaceted immersion and sampling of NOLA's cultural mojo, and a week I'll never forget.
Whimsical architecture blends French, Spanish and Caribbean styles, from colorful Creole townhouses to charmingly narrow 'shotgun' homes with Victorian touches. Airbnb might be your first thought for a stay, but the hospitality-driven services at area hotels make a getaway feel a bit more special. There are plenty of Vegas-y accommodations here as gambling is legal, Caesars and Boomtown being the most popular. For my trip, the One11 Hotel is a perfect choice. Just outside the French Quarter, the small boutique destination is housed in a century-old former sugar refinery and features exposed brick walls, wood beams and large steel structural bones. Melding its industrial past with its trendy present, it's got a great bar — including happy hour — and continental breakfast in the morning, plus an 8th-floor deck with scenic views of the Mississippi River.
New Orleans has always conjured exotic images and alluring activities that piqued my imagination. Voodoo, ghosts, cemeteries, swamps, the bayou, art, music, bars … all are on my to-do list. I start with historic graveyard environments — the Metairie Cemetery, where Vampire author Anne Rice is entombed inside a beautiful stained glass-adorned mausoleum, and the Greenwood Cemetery, featuring an array of historic Civil War monuments. Voodoo priestess Marie Laveau is interred in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, the city's oldest, which many consider NOLA's most haunted grounds. Speaking of spooky stuff, voodoo dolls make cute souvenirs, and I snatch some great ones at the Voodoo Museum and Voodoo Authentica, which also sell other mystical merch. In the French Quarter, on Magazine Street and in the Garden District, a host of unique mom-and-pop shops and fascinating exteriors beckon from every corner. A jaunt to the Hotel Saint Vincent reveals a classic Southern Gothic environment and two thematic cocktail spaces, one red-hued and sexy, the other green, bright and friendly.
Considered the birthplace of jazz, NOLA might have more musicians per capita than anywhere in the world. For an authentic immersion into its instrumental soul, visit Preservation Hall, where local legends go to jam. In general, though, NOLA residents steer clear of Bourbon Street and go to bars on Frenchman Street. Also in the Garden District, there's Tipitina's famous for Cajun and Zydeco music as well as fais do-do dancing; and the , not far from Tulane University, which also draws a college crowd. There are also street players everywhere, including the French Market, a farmers market for locals and tourists alike with food, art and activities.A visit to the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) reflects the city's spirit as well, with an impressive showcase of international and local works, including, through Aug. 10, 'New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations,' a collection that feels very Mardi Gras-adjacent in terms of costuming and pageantry. I also recommended the on the museum grounds for a lovely and eye-grabbing statue-specked art stroll.
When the Super Bowl was at Caesars Superdome (home of the New Orleans Saints) in February, NOLA got a lot of attention, especially for its dining scene. Fanciful French eaterie Lilette is where Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift had a hot date night, so my partner and I follow suit, enjoying the white-tablecloth hotspot's succulent steaks and inviting atmosphere. The next night, the old-school scene at Brennan's in the Quarter is even more my speed. The pink-and-green-schemed restaurant is where the iconic Bananas Foster dessert was invented, and the tableside demo/history lesson is fiery fun. My favorite dining discovery, the Vampire Apothecary, makes for a fanciful lunch, delicious sandwiches and soothing tea drinks amid seductive decor like dried flowers and witchy natural furnishings. NOLA staples like spicy beet-pickled eggs are served with Vampire brand tea to wash it down.
Also deserving of note, though I couldn't fit them in this time: Deanie's Seafood in the Quarter for crawfish; , which nurtured chefs Paul Prudhomme and Emeril Lagasse and is renowned for its weekend Jazz Brunch and 25-cent martinis on certain weekdays; Antoine's, founded in 1840, the oldest restaurant in the city; and Algiers Central Market, home of the muffaletta, an Italian sandwich made with round sesame seed bread, cured meats, provolone and mozzarella and a tangy olive salad spread.New Orleans allows drinking in public, and you'll see a lot of it on Bourbon Street via plastic drinking vessels, often from Pat O'Brien's, which created the notorious Hurricane. (Cannabis, though, is still illegal.) But beyond touristy takeout sippers, a bar tour is a must, whether you're looking for dive vibes or award-winning mixology.
Jewel of the South, which won the James Beard Foundation's award for best bar program, is aptly named, while Latitude 29, makes the tastiest tiki drinks in town, as created by the king of tropical cocktails — Beachbum Berry. For down-and-dirty atmosphere, locals love , a dark hovel with a heavy metal soundtrack, with live music and campy themes nightly, and , a gritty and gregarious hangout with a free jukebox that rocks, which is where I end the whirlwind week.It all goes by far too fast, and I still feel like I'm under the city's spell, which is likely to pull me back sooner than later. In the meantime, here are a few more Big Easy bullet points to note for your next trip, below.
- Get an up-close and personal look at the local swamps and gators! - Like San Francisco's cable cars, they're an exciting and organic way to travel around the city. (The St. Charles line is the one featured in A Streetcar Named Desire). - Family fun with botanical gardens, rides and more. The National WWII Museum - Everything you ever wanted to see and learn about World War II in one mind-blowing, multi-building facility. - The creamiest sno-cones you'll ever get a brain freeze from, and where all the locals go. Prepare to wait in a long line.Drive-Thru Daiquiris- There are plenty of walk-up outlets, but for a cold buzz in your car, roll though a drive-thru. A version of this story appeared in the May Travel issue of Los Angeles magazine, on stands now.

‘The Vampire Lestat' Cast Breaks Down the Next Chapter of AMC's Anne Rice Immortal Universe

During San Diego Comic-Con, io9 was invited to a press conference for The Vampire Lestat, the latest Anne Rice Immortal Universe series for AMC. And don't get it twisted, this is not Interview With The Vampire season three; this is officially the Lestat show, as he takes the mic to tell his story and put some misconceptions about himself and his past to rest—that is, until they rise from the dead or awaken… Star Sam Reid (Lestat de Lioncourt) was joined by Jacob Anderson (Louis de Pointe du Lac), Eric Bogosian (Daniel Molloy), and the show's creative team to break down the slew of announcements and teases hot off the SDCC panel. Fans of the show will recall that season two of Interview With the Vampire ended with a seeming reconciliation between Lestat and Louis, but their honeymoon phase was likely short-lived once Daniel Molloy actually published his book, if the teaser screened at the convention is any indication. It cold-opens on Louis and Lestat in separation proceedings with their lawyers. 'We're in a divorce era.' Reid smiled. 'The [Interview With The Vampire] book is still quite a large hurdle to have gotten over. At the end of season two, neither of them had read the book, and so there's obviously the fallout of that.' Anderson jumped in, 'That scene that you see in the teaser was mad. I won't talk too much about the whole scene, but I was a bit shaken after it… I was like, 'What am I doing?' I feel like we had to do a different thing in that scene than we've done before.' Reid continued, 'Yeah, well, you kind of have the history of two seasons and a lot of previous experience and a lot of weight like that that exists now between the two characters that we get to carry on to every scene, so it's really fun that the layers just become deeper and deeper. It's really fun. There's endless possibilities that you can do with these two characters [who] kind of really burn each other's houses down and rebuild them back together block by block, only for somebody to come in with a demolition crew and do it all over again.' And that someone was Danny Boy Molloy with his book. Molloy returns as he's recruited to document Lestat's musical side of the story in a visual medium through the Brat Prince's words and music. And yes, there will be a lot of songs about Louis and the fallout of their break-up. 'It's the love of his life. How could he not be influenced by Louis in his songwriting?' revealed composer and music supervisor Daniel Hart, who said he pulled musical influences from Led Zeppelin to Robert Plant, to classical to jazz, to even modern music. 'I think it's fair to say, and I think I'm allowed to say, he's written songs in season three specifically about Louis. You will know that they are songs about Louis. There are other songs about many other subjects. Lestat has many thoughts and feelings. But when we were working on the songs at the beginning, I think the thing we found was the most helpful in trying to find music that would embody the spirit of Lestat, was to try and avoid doing what most musicals are required to do, which is to further the plot in their lyrics.' Showrunner Rolin Jones elaborated that it all comes to a head as Lestat is living through quite an identity crisis between 'the performative vampire and actual vampire,' and explained that after an event in episode one, Lestat begins questioning everything. 'There's a little bit of the portrait of the artist and throwing yourself out there, right? And you put this music out there; you put, like, 'This is how I'm going to tell my story. I'm gonna tell it this way' This music is putting himself out there as an artist [and] opens him up to a level of introspection that is dangerous, thrilling, very, very terrifying, and that he's not prepared for, and so you know we're in a real Hamlet situation here. I think that he's going after the really, really big things, and I think he's charging forward with abandon, and does that mean trying to end it? Don't know. Does that mean he's trying to get to the other side of this? What is all this acting out? What is this longing for extremity? This thing that's within him cracks it all open.' And since it's been confirmed that Akasha's blood is within him, it begs the question if this thirst for the unknown is what could be driving him. We don't know yet who's playing the Queen of the Damned, the first of their vampire kind; Jones has said an offer was made to an actress, but she has yet to be revealed. Reid, however, played it coy on whether or not Akasha's influence plays a part in how Lestat takes to fame. 'With the blood of Akasha, does he feel like he's invincible? Basically, yes, I would say so, yeah, and to [a] fault. I think he's blindsided by how much power that he has. I think like an important key [about Lestat] when you have that much power, he doesn't really feel lovable because it feels like, 'If I showed all of the power, people would just be scared of me.' That's a big dynamic between [him and Louis] and [he] hides so much of himself from Louis so that he feels like he can't be truly loved, and then it ends up being catastrophic in his own right. And if you feel invincible, why not dive headfirst into the concrete and see what happens? And carrying along the effects of that, it's his crux, I suppose. It's where we begin the season.' Airbnb, Inc. (ABNB) is currently trading around $140. The company's market capitalization sits around $87.22 billion, making it a major player in the stock market. Airbnb has faced significant challenges recently, with its stock price decreasing by more than 12% year-over-year. Investors are optimistic about the company's long-term growth, especially as travel rebounds post-pandemic. Warren Buffett once said, "If you don't find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die." Here's how you can earn passive income with just $100 today. Broader economic conditions, including fears of a looming recession and rising interest rates, partly drive Airbnb's stock volatility. These factors have hit consumer discretionary stocks, like Airbnb, particularly hard. Airbnb continues to post solid earnings, with impressive user base growth and revenue growth. The company has reinvested heavily into its platform and operations, positioning itself for future success. One important note is that Airbnb does not currently pay a dividend, as it focuses on reinvesting its profits back into the business. This has allowed the company to grow faster, but it also means that investors are banking on stock price appreciation for returns. Airbnb Stock Price Prediction for 2025 Looking ahead to 2025, Airbnb's stock price is expected to increase. Current forecasts predict the stock could rise by 35.84% this November, bringing the share price up to $184.41. This prediction is based on the company's current growth trajectory and market sentiment. A P/E ratio higher than the industry average suggests that the stock may be overvalued, particularly in the short term. Analysts have pointed out that while Airbnb continues to grow, the stock's current price may not reflect the full extent of future challenges, such as increased competition in the online booking space and potential regulatory hurdles in key markets. This temporary decline could present a buying opportunity for investors with a long-term outlook, particularly if the stock becomes undervalued relative to its earnings potential. Airbnb Stock Price Prediction for 2026 By 2026, analysts expect Airbnb stock to reach approximately $164.74, representing a 21.36% increase from its current level. This growth is expected to come from several key factors: Global travel rebound: As travel has recovered from the pandemic, Airbnb is well-positioned to benefit. The company's innovative platform and wide-reaching user base give it a competitive edge. Reinvestment in business: Airbnb has consistently reinvested its earnings into improving its platform, which should drive growth in bookings and revenue over the next few years. Analysts caution that while growth is expected, it will likely be slower than in previous years. The company's ROE remains strong, signaling that Airbnb is using its profits efficiently. Still, investors must watch for potential risks, such as regulatory changes or a slowdown in consumer spending. Airbnb Stock Price Prediction for 2030 Looking ahead to 2030, the long-term forecast for Airbnb stock remains moderate. Experts predict the stock could reach $144.15, representing a 6.18% increase from today's price. This optimistic outlook is based on several factors: Sustained global growth: With international travel expected to rise, Airbnb's global platform will likely continue expanding, driving revenue growth. Innovations and new services: As Airbnb expands into experiences, longer-term rentals and potentially new markets, the company will have more revenue streams, boosting its financial performance. Technological advancements: Airbnb's ability to leverage technology for seamless customer experiences is a key differentiator and as the platform evolves, it could maintain its leadership position in the online travel industry. While the long-term outlook is positive, it's essential to remember that 6% growth over five years suggests steady but not explosive returns. Investors should weigh this moderate growth against other market opportunities. Methodology for Stock Price Prediction To forecast Airbnb's stock price, we rely on a combination of technical analysis, fundamental analysis and expert opinions: Expert opinions: Analysts provide key insights into Airbnb's future performance. While some are optimistic about the company's long-term prospects, others remain cautious due to concerns over profitability and the broader economic environment. Technical analysis: This involves looking at historical price trends and market indicators. Airbnb's stock has shown significant volatility, with a 2.95% price fluctuation over the last 30 days and 50% green days. These trends help us gauge future price movements. Fundamental analysis: We analyze Airbnb's financial performance, including its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio, revenue growth and return on equity (ROE). Airbnb has been efficiently reinvesting profits, which has led to robust earnings growth. There are concerns about future earnings potential, with some analysts forecasting slower growth.
