Bear roaming at the runway halts flights at Japanese airport
A bear roaming the runway forced a Japanese airport to cancel flights on Thursday and declare itself off-limits to passengers for the day. The black bear appeared at northern Japan's Yamagata Airport early morning, immediately prompting the closure of its runway. This first sighting resulted in a delay of up to an hour of four flights, before the animal reemerged around noon, this time "running" on the runway. Airport staff used a car to chase it away and closed the runway again, with the bear still at large somewhere in the facility. "Given the situation there is no way we can host plane arrivals now," Yamagata Airport official Akira Nagai told AFP Thursday evening, adding the second closure led to 12 flight cancellations. With hunters brought in to set up a trap and police officers surrounding the airport to prevent the bear from escaping, "we're in a stalemate now", Nagai said. The facility plans to keep the runway closed till around 8:00 pm, the official said. Human encounters with bears have reached record levels in Japan, with 219 people attacked and six deaths in the 12 months to April 2024. Last month, a bear sighting brought a premature end to a golf tournament in central Japan, with organisers citing safety precautions. Climate change affecting food sources and hibernation times, along with depopulation caused by an ageing society, are causing bears to venture into towns more frequently, scientists say. Nigeria and Brazil sign audiovisual co-production agreement
The agreement will grant both countries access to each other's incentive programmes. Nigeria and Brazil have entered into a co-production agreement aimed at strengthening cultural ties and expanding opportunities in film, television, animation and other audiovisual sectors. The Audiovisual Co-Production Agreement, recently signed by both countries, paves the way for joint development, funding, and distribution of creative projects, marking a new era of collaboration between two of the world's most populous Black nations, according to a report by Deadline. The bilateral accord is designed to enhance global visibility for both Nigerian and Brazilian creatives while fostering a deeper cultural and creative exchange rooted in their shared transatlantic history. Under the terms of the agreement, filmmakers and producers from each country will gain access to incentives and support structures available in the partner nation, promoting shared resources and collaborative storytelling. Nigeria's Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa-Musawa, hailed the agreement as more than a diplomatic milestone, describing it as a bridge connecting continents, cultures, and creative economies. She emphasised that the deal reflects Nigeria's commitment to showcasing its stories on the global stage and collaborating with nations that value African and Afro-Brazilian narratives. Musa-Musawa noted that the agreement aligns with ongoing initiatives such as Destination 2030 and the 'Nigeria Everywhere' campaign, which aim to grow Nigeria's creative economy through international partnerships, cultural diplomacy and expanded access to global markets. She added that the collaboration will not only spark creative innovation but also generate employment and strengthen industries that have long been central to the cultural identity of both nations. Additional details, including exchange programmes and implementation plans, are expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks as the two countries begin activating the agreement's potential to reshape their creative landscapes.

Sharjah pushes Arab literature into Latin America
As Latin America's premier book industry event, this year's fair coincided with Rio's designation as UNESCO World Book Capital. This offered the Agency a significant opportunity to connect with major publishing players across the continent. Global interest in Arab literature Commenting on the participation, Tamer Said, Director of the Sharjah Literary Agency, stated: 'Our participation in the Rio International Book Fair was a significant step toward building sustainable partnerships with Latin American publishing institutions. We witnessed a genuine interest in Arab literature from Brazilian publishers, opening up a promising opportunity to expand translation and distribution circles and introduce the voice of the Arab author to new readers and diverse cultural landscapes. At the Sharjah Literary Agency, we believe that building literary bridges is at the heart of our work, and investing in these key cultural events will make a long-lasting impact on Arab publishing globally.' Exploring opportunities for translation and co-publishing During the meetings with Brazilian publishers, the Agency discussed mechanisms for reciprocal translation and the possibilities of co-publishing, as well as how to professionally manage Arab authors' rights in Latin America. Future collaborations were also discussed with potential partners, laying the groundwork for new projects that aim to enhance the presence of Arab creativity in South America. This participation is part of a broader strategic vision led by the Emirate of Sharjah to strengthen cultural exchange between the Arab world and Latin America by consolidating its presence on international platforms and fostering direct dialogue between publishing stakeholders on both sides. The Sharjah Literary Agency, one of the initiatives of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), aims to empower Arab writers to access new markets and bolster the presence of Arab literary rights on global platforms. The Agency remains firmly committed to representing Arab creativity and expanding its reach on the international scene, contributing to sustainable bridges of cultural and knowledge exchange between peoples.
