Labour councillor cleared over cutting throats comment at rally

Yahoo17 hours ago
A Labour councillor who called for far-right activists' throats to be cut at an anti-racism rally in the wake of the Southport murders has been found not guilty of encouraging violent disorder.
Ricky Jones, 58, faced trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court accused of the offence after he described demonstrators as 'disgusting Nazi fascists'.
A video showing Jones addressing crowds on Hoe Street in Walthamstow, east London, on August 7 last year went viral on social media after the protest, which had been organised in response to plans for a far-right march outside Waltham Forest Immigration Bureau.
The now-suspended councillor, wearing a black polo top and surrounded by cheering supporters, said: 'They are disgusting Nazi fascists. We need to cut all their throats and get rid of them all.'
He also drew his finger across his throat as he spoke to the crowd.
Jurors deliberated for just over half an hour and found him not guilty on Friday.
The 58-year-old, who at the time was also employed as a full-time official for the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) union, was arrested on August 8 last year and interviewed at Brixton police station that night.
Jones, who has been a borough councillor in Dartford, Kent, since 2019, was suspended by the Labour Party the day after the incident.
Prosecutor Ben Holt previously told the court Jones, a father of four and grandfather, used 'inflammatory, rabble-rousing language in the throng of a crowd described as a tinderbox'.
He told jurors Jones's speech was amplified through a microphone and speakers and took place 'in a setting where violence could readily have been anticipated'.
Giving evidence in his trial, Jones said his comment did not refer to far-right protesters involved in the riots at the time, but to those who had reportedly left National Front stickers on a train with razor blades hidden behind them.
Before he made the comment, jurors were shown video where he said to crowds: 'You've got women and children using these trains during the summer holidays.
'They don't give a shit about who they hurt.'
He told the court he was 'appalled' by political violence, adding: 'I've always believed the best way to make people realise who you are and what you are is to do it peacefully.'
Jones, who said he was on the left of the Labour Party, previously told jurors the riots had made him feel 'upset' and 'angry' and said he felt it was his 'duty' to attend counter-protests, despite being warned to stay away from such demonstrations by the Labour Party.

Uber driver 'completely forgot' it was illegal to refuse passengers with guide dogs

AN Uber driver told a court he 'totally forgot' that it was illegal for him to refuse to pick up a customer with a guide dog. Khurram Mukhtar had driven away from the disabled woman who booked his car after refusing to take both her and her dog. He had his licence revoked by Bradford Council following the incident in March. And on Wednesday he appeared in court charged with failing to accept a booking from a person with an assistance dog. The court was shown a video of Mukhtar saying 'no, no, no' before pulling away after the woman who booked the Uber informed him it would be illegal for him to refuse to transport her and her dog. He admitted the charge, telling magistrates he had been 'confused' as to what the law was. Waseem Raja, prosecuting the case on behalf of Bradford Council, said Mukhtar, 44, of Colyton Mount, Allerton, had received a boking to pick up a passenger from the Yorkshire Building Society headquarters at Yorkshire House, off Rooley Lane. The booking was made at 4.38pm on March 4, and Mukhtar's Uber arrived around 10 minutes later. The woman who booked the Uber relied on a guide dog, which was present when the vehicle arrived. Mr Raja said: 'He simply refused to take the dog and refused to take the complainant.' The complainant began recording him on her mobile phone. This footage was shown to Magistrates, and showed the complainant telling Mukhtar 'It is against the law to say no to a guide dog.'. He replied: 'No, no, no. I can't allow dogs. You need to order a pet Uber.' She told him he would be reported, and Mukhtar drove off, leaving the woman and her dog without a way to get home. Mr Raja said the Council received a complaint about his behaviour shortly after and the taxi licensing service began an investigation. Bradford Magistrates Court When they interviewed Mukhtar, he said he had forgotten that it was illegal to refuse to transport a visually impaired person and their guide dog. Mr Raja added: 'She relies on taxis to get her about, and this incident left her feeling quite upset. She feels she was treated unfairly.' He pointed out that you can hear the complainant sigh as the taxi drives off. Mukhtar represented himself in court. When asked to explain his actions, he said: 'I was so confused. 'I forgot you have to take guide dogs. I totally forgot. I know taking a guide dog is very important.' He said he only realised what he had done was breaking the law the following day. 'I've suffered from this. I've got no job' When he was questioned as to why he left a vulnerable woman with a disability at the roadside, he said: 'I was too confused at that time.' Mr Raja pointed out that all drivers are provided with training, which included disability awareness and the responsibilities of drivers in dealing with disabled customers. He added: 'He was only licensed in 2022, so any training should be fresh in his mind.' Responding to this, Mukhtar said: 'I've had no guide dog jobs in that time. I was so confused at the time. I told my friend about it after and he said 'why did you not take that job?'' Magistrates were told that on top of any punishment they issued, Mukhtar's licence had already been revoked. After some deliberation, Mukhtar was fined £80 and ordered to pay a £32 surcharge. The case cost Bradford Council £1,360 to investigate and prosecute, but due to his limited income Mukhtar will only be required to contribute £150 towards those costs. What is the law about taxis and guide/assistance dogs? According to the Private Hire Vehicles (Carriage of Guide Dogs etc.) Act 2002, in the UK it is 'It is an offence for the operator of a private hire vehicle to fail or refuse to accept a booking for a private hire vehicle if the reason for the failure or refusal is that the disabled person will be accompanied by his/her assistance dog. 'A person who is guilty of an offence under this section is liable on summary conviction to a fine.'

Snoring suspected drink-driver caught by police sleeping at wheel

Watch the moment that a suspected drink-driver was caught by police snoring at the wheel. Footage shared by Cambridgeshire Police on Thursday (14 August) shows officers approaching a stationary vehicle in the middle of the road, after a member of the public reported that they saw a driver stumble into a Mercedes van and drive away. Inside the van was Scott Tuite, 36, who can be heard audibly snoring before officers removed the keys from the ignition and woke him up. Tuite, of Baumgartner, Godmanchester, failed to provide a specimen of breath and was arrested. He pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis at Cambridge Magistrates' Court on Thursday (7 August). He was handed a community order for 12 months, ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and disqualified from driving.

JD Vance has a rough day of golf at Trump's Turnberry course in Scotland

JD Vance's visit to the U.K. had another subpar moment when the vice president swung his way through a brutal round of golf on Trump's Turnberry course in Scotland. Video of the 41-year-old Republican needing four putts to conquer one green, according to local reports, went viral on social media Friday. Golf Monthly says that's nearly double the number of putts an average golfer spends on a green. Vance and his family arrived in Scotland on Wednesday, according to the BBC. He reportedly hit the links on Thursday surrounded by secret service personnel. Vance is fresh off a stay in the English countryside, where the staff of popular pub The Bull in Charlbury allegedly threatened a mutiny if they were forced to serve the staunch conservative. The restaurant didn't accept his reservation, according to The Daily Beast. Some residents of the Oxfordshire hamlet were upset by Vance choosing their region to spend some downtime. Local media outlet the Oxford Clarion posted photos of signs in locals' lawns protesting the vice president. Residents also complained to the BBC throughout the week that, politics aside, Vance's motorcade was crowding country streets and complicating daily travel. The historic Turnberry golf course came under the umbrella of the Trump Organization in 2014. Even before first becoming president in 2016, Trump was met by protesters objecting to his 'toxic, racist views' when he visited his Scotland links, according to The Guardian. He returned to Turnberry in July — this time having twice been elected to serve in the White House — and was once again greeted by critics upset over the war in Gaza, his treatment of immigrants in the U.S., and his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In March, Turnberry was targeted by vandals who were angered by the Trump administration's handling of Israel's invasion of Gaza. Protesters painted 'Gaza is not for sale' on the property's white gates. His course in Ireland has also been vandalized over politics. _____
