Know your PSTG: KP safety advice against SMS fraud
Kolkata: Kolkata Police, via a Facebook post, has warned citizens not to fall victim to frauds via SMSes, simply by following the new TRAI regulations.
TRAI launched a nationwide suffix-based classification system for SMSes, effective May 6, to help mobile users identify message types and combat spam.
Under the new guidelines, all SMS headers will now carry specific suffix letters indicating their purpose: 'P' for promotional content, 'S' for service messages, 'T' for financial transactional alerts, and 'G' for govt-authorised communications.
For example, explained cops, a message ending with 'G' will be on, say, weather updates. An 'S' will denote a service-related update like the last day of mobile recharge.
A 'T' would include those messages that relate to banking transactions. A message ending with 'P' is likely to be an advertisement.

"Any message that does not contain any one of the four letters should immediately trigger an alert. In such cases, do not click on links and immediately block the sender," said the police. Cops plan to hold awareness camps in this regard across the city, especially for the elderly.
"This implementation marks a crucial step toward transparent telecommunication practices and enhanced user experience," said a TRAI official.

"The system will empower over 1.1 billion mobile users to make informed decisions about their message interactions."
"This is a welcome move and will be helpful for everyone. We hope the police can spread this awareness even on the ground," said Sariful Islam, on KP Facebook.
The regulatory body will monitor the implementation's effectiveness over the next six months and may introduce adjustments based on user feedback and market response.

'We don't have money, and neither does Siddaramaiah': Empty-coffer remarks embarrass Karnataka govt; home minister G Parameshwara says it was only in jest
BENGALURU/BAGALKOT: A tongue-in-cheek remark by Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara about shortage of funds in the state govt has triggered a political firestorm and social-media frenzy, after a video of his speech in North Karnataka's Badami went viral. This prompted Parameshwara to issue a clarification on Tuesday, insisting his comments in jest had been misconstrued as a suggestion that the Congress govt was facing a financial crunch. Speaking at the inauguration of a fire station in Badami Monday evening, Parameshwara urged local Congress MLA BB Chimmankatti to think big and push for a Rs 1,000-crore development plan for the region, once the capital of the Chalukya dynasty. HM clarifies there's no financial distress The home minister doubled down on the point for comic effect. "After providing rice, lentils, and oil, the funds are depleted," he quipped, before gesturing to excise minister RB Timmapur and adding with a grin, "The 'enne' (liquor or excise) minister is right here," drawing peals of laughter from the crowd. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo While the humorous tone elicited chuckles at the event, the viral clip has since ignited serious political chatter and left the govt red-faced. The minister said on Tuesday: "I have not said like that, who said there is no money? I have defended the govt, saying we have presented a record budget... as someone said things jokingly during the speech, I reacted in a similar fashion, that's all." Reiterating the fiscal strength of the state, the minister said, "A sum of Rs 22,000 crore has been allocated for irrigation in the budget. Allocations have been made for the five guarantee schemes, and instructions have been made to prepare an action plan for Rs 50 crore in every constituency." He added, "I'm now saying officially that there is no financial distress in our govt. I'm saying it very clearly. Sometimes, there may be a delay in the release of funds, as DPR and estimates have to be prepared before releasing money. There may be some delay in that; other than that, there is nothing else." Despite the explanation, Parameshwara's remark - "We don't have the money, and neither does Siddaramaiah" - continues to dominate discussions, with political opponents questioning the fiscal health of the state and the delivery of five welfare guarantees.

'Increased intensity and gravity of his offence': Kolkata man convicted of raping stepdaughter confesses he's HIV+; gets life term
KOLKATA: The confession of a man convicted of raping his minor stepdaughter, who also revealed he was HIV-positive, prompted a Bankshall Court judge to sentence him to life in prison. His confession 'increased the intensity and the gravity of his offence.' The confession came last Saturday at the end of three years and three months of trial when Pocso Judge Papiya Das was hearing out the 31-year-old convict before sentencing him. The day before, the judge convicted Ajay Panja for raping his 14-and-a-half-year-old stepdaughter repeatedly since 2016 and threatening to kill her mother and brother if she spoke about it. Under Pocso, the crime attracts a minimum of 20 years in jail to life behind bars and even the death penalty. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Panja's lawyers pleaded for minimum punishment on the grounds that a lifetime of incarceration at 31 sealed any chance of reformation, and the convict deserved a second shot at life. They also pointed out that he did not have any criminal record and, being a footpath dweller, was from a poor socio-economic background. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Manggahan: Scholarships You Can Apply For (Start Now) College Scholarship | Google Search Search Now Undo On Saturday, when Panja appeared in court, the judge asked him, 'Are you in a fit state of mind to give a reply before the court?' Panja replied in the affirmative and added, 'Ami garib manush. Bou-bachha ache. Ami er aage kono mamlai jorai ni. Jato kam saja deoya jai. Ami HIV-infected. (I am a poor man with a wife and kids. I have never been involved in any criminal case. Be lenient with sentencing. I am HIV-infected).' Panja's lawyers, Surajit Mondal and Debtanu Dutta, immediately urged the court to sentence him to 20 years in prison, but special public prosecutor Amalendu Chakraborty vehemently opposed this. 'Today, for the first time, the convict disclosed before this court that he is HIV-positive. Therefore, knowing fully well that he is HIV-positive, he committed aggravated penetrative sexual assault on his stepdaughter. The child's trauma will remain for life, and there is no reason why the convict should be treated with leniency,' Chakraborty said. Judge Das concurred with the argument. 'There is no denial that on account of such an offence, the entire future of a young girl has been seriously affected. Moreover, it might not be out of sight that by virtue of such aggravated penetrative sexual assault, the minor victim girl has also been affected with HIV-positive disease, which increased the intensity and gravity of the offence committed by him. This court is not oblivious to the saying that 'every saint had a past, and every sinner has a future'. But at the same time, this court is of the opinion that if a lenient view is taken against the offence committed, a wrong signal will go to society,' the judge said in her order. Though the child was abused since 2016, she spoke up only after she was sent to the state-run Ashar Alo Girls' Home after being rescued by CINI Asha in July 2021. Home superintendent Sujata Dey took her to Hare Street police station to lodge a complaint in December 2021. Dey and Hare Street sub-inspector Tanushree Majumdar, the investigating officer, both deposed in court along with the survivor. The court found the survivor's statement 'cogent, consistent, reliable, uniform and trustworthy' and said there was no reason 'to discard her evidence.' (The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
