Digi arrest: Delhi cops arrest Kol loan manager
Kolkata: Buddhadeb Hazra, a loan department manager, was arrested in the city by Delhi Police, with help of Kolkata Police and Barrackpore Police, for allegedly orchestrating more than 10 digital arrest fraud cases across six states. The arrest was carried out after a Delhi-based doctor lost nearly Rs 15 lakh in this crime. The arrest follows the arrest of his accomplice, Md Sahin Khan, from Bangalore's Victoria Hospital on July 2. Hazra, who completed his postgraduate MBA degree in Ghaziabad, previously worked in the loan departments of various banks for over three years. Under the influence of one John, Hazra reportedly started recruiting corporate account holders for online fraud operations. The investigation began when a Delhi doctor filed a complaint at the Cyber Central District police station, reporting that he fell victim to a "digital arrest" scam. The victim was coerced into transferring Rs 14,85,921 by fraudsters impersonating govt officials who threatened legal action. High-tech cams, CCTV, FASTag, toll plaza inputs: How West Bengal police tracked and nabbed Bihar shooters in Kolkata
Around 9am on July 18, a day after Bihar gangster Chandan Mishra was shot dead at Paras Hospital in Patna, the West Bengal police received an alert from their counterparts in Bihar that the gang behind the crime was heading towards West Bengal. The gang members were not using any cellphones to stay off the grid. So, there was no way the police could track them using their mobile tower location, officials said. 'The accused persons in the car had switched off their mobile phones. Hence, we were not able to track them. We had the vehicle's number and its description. The only way to track them was the vehicle in which they were travelling,' said a senior IPS officer involved in the case. Officers of the West Bengal police and Kolkata Police took the help of some advanced gadgets and software to pick up digital footprints of the vehicle as it moved from one corner of the city to another. The killers had no inkling. 'Based on various inputs that were received, we were certain that the vehicle would reach Kolkata by the evening of July 18. We started analysing FASTag and toll plaza data on the route the vehicle would possibly take to reach Kolkata, such as Maithon, Dankuni, Palsit and Vidyasagar Setu,' said the officer. The white-coloured vehicle entered Kolkata around 10:30pm on July 17 through Vidyasagar Setu, which connects Kolkata and Howrah over River Hooghly. Once the vehicle was on Kolkata's roads, police started tracking it with the help of the Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system. ANPR is an advanced camera that automatically reads vehicle number plates as they come under the lens, allowing these details to be compared against database records. They help security agencies in tracking vehicles. The officers received inputs from Bihar police that the gang could be meeting one person named Ehsaan, who was their local contact. Ehsaan stayed at Sukhobrishti, a posh residential housing campus at New Town in Bidhannagar. ANPR data revealed that the vehicle, after entering Kolkata, took AJC Bose Road and crossed Chingrighata on EM Bypass while moving towards New Town. After a few hours the vehicle returned to Kolkata. It was spotted near Park Street around 3:50am in the early hours of July 18. 'After that, the car remained untraceable for the next few hours. There could be multiple reasons as to why even the high-end ANPR momentarily fails to track a vehicle,' said an officer. Meanwhile, the police were also scanning through other CCTV cameras installed on roads to identify the gang members inside the vehicle. The cops had clear footage of Tauseef, Nishu Khan, Harsh and Bhim in the car. 'As the vehicle went off-grid for some time, we used a specialised software for profiling. We also checked various hotels. Tracking the vehicle's movement was very critical for us. Around 5:30pm on July 18, the vehicle was again spotted near Urbana, a high-end residential housing complex in east Kolkata. As the vehicle was moving away from the arterial roads, where there were no cameras, it became difficult to trace it,' said an officer. Multiple teams were deployed in east Kolkata, particularly in Anandapur and its adjoining area where the vehicle was last spotted, to scour the area. The vehicle was then spotted near a guest house, a few metres from Anandapur police station. 'Based on real intelligence analysis, we identified a few places where the gang could be hiding. We narrowed down on Anandapur. Meanwhile, CCTV footage corroborated our analysis. The car was spotted around 70-80 metres from a guest house,' said a senior Kolkata STF officer. Teams from the Kolkata Police, STF and police commandos surrounded the guest house located in a residential area and finally arrested the four criminals, including main accused Tauseef alias Badshah, his cousin Nishu Khan and two aides, Harsh and Bhim. Police found that Tauseef had even got a haircut and shaved his beard and moustache to change his appearance. The police also said that Tauseef and his gang used decoys at least twice to throw the investigators off track. In Patna, they had roped in a woman to give the impression that they were a family. While coming to Kolkata, they had brought Nishu Khan with them, who couldn't walk and had to be carried. 'They wanted to give an impression to the hotel staff that they had come to Kolkata for Nishu's treatment,' said an officer. Since the time they entered Kolkata on the night of June 18, it took the cops less than 24 hours to track them down, identify the location and nab them. 'Human intelligence and analysis of the inputs we were receiving from some of the advanced machines played a major role in the operation. First we had to identify the area and then we had to physically verify. Once that was done, the operation to nab them was started,' said an official.

Advanced street cameras, toll plaza alerts: How Patna murder accused were nabbed in Kolkata
Advanced automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, CCTV footage, alerts from toll plazas and human intelligence helped Kolkata Police and West Bengal Police nab the four accused behind the murder of Bihar-based gangster Chandan Mishra, officials of the police forces said on Tuesday (July 22, 2025). 'The four accused including the main hit man Tauseef Khan, his associate Harsh, Khan's maternal cousin Nishu Khan, and Nishu's medical assistant Bhim drove into Kolkata through the Vidyasagar Setu toll plaza at around 10.30 p.m. on July 17. Their phones were switched off, so we could only track them through the car's number plate,' an officer of the West Bengal Police's Special Task Force (STF) said. The officer added that through advanced ANPR cameras, the accused's vehicle was tracked to Sukhobrishti, a housing complex in New Town in the Kolkata-adjacent Bidhannagar. Tausif and the three other accused had reached Sukhobrishti around 11.25pm on July 17, and left from there around half an hour later. 'Bihar Police had alerted us that their local contact Ehsaan is expected to assist them at Sukhobrishti. However, Ehsaan and his friends at the housing complex did not respond to Tauseef's calls when the vehicle reached the housing. Tauseef and the others had left from there the same night, and we detained Ehsaan and four others from Sukhobrishti for interrogation,' the officer of West Bengal Police STF said. During interrogation, Ehsaan allegedly confessed to the police that Tauseef's accomplice from Patna, Sahil, had messaged him on July 17 notifying him that Tausif and his team had reached Kolkata, and that they were ready to be received at Sukhobrishti. However, Ehsaan reportedly did not respond to Tauseef's calls. The officer further added that after the vehicle left Sukhobrishti in the wee hours of July 18, its movement was again spotted at Kolkata's Park Street area at around 3:53 a.m., and was later seen near the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. 'We thought they would make an attempt to flee from Kolkata because by the morning of July 18, media had started sharing that five people had been detained over the Patna murder. We alerted all toll plazas to secure the city's exit points, and scanned the city's hotels in the meantime,' the official said, adding that by then the Kolkata Police STF had also been alerted. A high-ranking official of the Kolkata Police STF said on Tuesday that through analysis of intelligence, traffic cameras, and by interrogating locals of the area, the accused's vehicle had been tracked to Anandapur near the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass on the evening of July 18. 'There was a guesthouse at Anandapur where a group of four men and one woman had checked in around half an hour after the vehicle had been parked in the area. We checked hotel CCTVs and identified Nishu Khan, who we knew was paralysed waist down from an earlier bullet injury,' the Kolkata Police STF officer said. He added that the prime accused, Tauseef, was difficult to identify because he had allegedly undergone a complete change in appearance by then, with the help of a barber booked through an online service. The woman accompanying them was Nishu's local contact, he said. 'We sent in teams and secured the area around the guesthouse, and shortly after, raided two rooms from where we arrested the five people. They were unarmed, and nothing significant was seized from them. Subsequently, they were arrested by Bihar Police,' the officer from Kolkata Police STF said. Bihar-based gangster Chandan Mishra was out on parole and was shot dead in an open firing inside Paras Hospital in Patna in the morning on July 17. The 'leader' of the hit team, Tauseef, and three others were arrested in Kolkata on July 18 in joint operations of the Bihar Police, West Bengal Police, and Kolkata Police.

Fake currency seizure reveals investment fraud racket
1 2 Kolkata: Following Saturday's seizure of counterfeit currency with a face value of Rs 9 crore from a hotel near the Dhamakhali ferry ghat in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, police have unearthed an online investment fraud racket. Police said the gang was run by Abhishek Tiwari, who is on the run. On Monday, police arrested Tishan Sen, and a search is on for his aides, Sirajuddin Molla and Debottam Chakraborty. ADG (CID) Vishal Garg said, "Tiwari and Sen were arrested by Kolkata Police in Feb in an investment fraud case. We found that the accused offered huge loans to people without much paperwork or background checks. Once the victims agreed to speak to them, they made video calls and used genuine money at the top and fake currency at the bottom to show that they had the cash ready. The victim was then asked to pay a 1%-2% commission to avail of the loan. This was how they cheated Subhasish Acharya of Burnpur, Asansol, of Rs 22 lakh. Acharya, a builder, was offered a loan of Rs 30 crore and got trapped in this scam." The gang printed the counterfeit currency from a shop in Sealdah. They had told the shop owner that the currency would be used in a movie. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata
