A woman has alleged rape by an army jawan in Kolkata's Park Street area. The prime accused has been arrested by the city police. This comes as two other cases of rape in the past month has shaken the city with many taking to the streets to protest against the lack of safety of women in Kolkata.
The survivor's husband is in jail, and according to the complaint filed by her, the accused had agreed to help free her husband from jail and get him out on bail. She filed the complaint at the Park Street police station on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) night against the army jawan who works in Assam.
The complainant has also said that the jawan Manibur Rahman lured her with promises of her husband's freedom and repeatedly raped her for multiple days. In her written complaint, the homemaker stated that Rahman had assured her different types of assistance during January-February, 2024.
The accused was arrested at the Watgunge Police Station. He is a native of Birbhum district in West Bengal. He was produced in a city court on Thursday (July 24, 2025); the court gave police custody until August 4.
Rahman had also threatened to make the survivor's nude photos public. Investigation is underway and is being interrogated.
The Kolkata Police have already recorded the survivor's statement, and she has undergone medical tests for further investigation.
This comes as two rape cases from South Calcutta Law College and Indian Institute of Management–Calcutta is still under investigation. This is the third incident of rape in the city within a month raising questions about women's safety in the city.
Sentence of rape accused reduced
The division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi of Calcutta High Court on Wednesday has reduced the sentence of two convicts Fagun Mandi and Rabindra Routh found guilty in the gangrape and murder of a five-year-old girl.
A Jhargram sessions court had awarded the two men death sentence in 2023. Justice Basak has given the two life imprisonment without the possibility of remission for 60 years.
Considering the socio-economic background of the convicts, the judge noted 'we deem it appropriate to impose life sentence on both the appellants without the possibility of remission for a period of 60 years from the date of commission of the offence.'
The rape and murder of the minor had happened in 2021 when she was missing from home and found buried in a paddy field. The convicts were awarded death sentence under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) act.

Suspect Arrested 13 Days After Girl, 10, Sexually Assaulted In Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Thirteen days after the sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district, police have arrested the suspect, identified as Biswakarma, a migrant worker from Assam. The arrest brings a breakthrough in a case that had sparked outrage across the state and raised urgent concerns over child safety. Confirming the arrest, Inspector General of Police Asra Garg told NDTV, "The case was challenging, but the Tamil Nadu police ultimately arrested the suspect." Police said Biswakarma will be produced before a court today. His arrest comes after an intensive investigation, during which the Tamil Nadu police had announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh for any leads. CCTV visuals, which showed the minor girl being followed and forcibly lifted by a man, had been circulated earlier to aid identification. NDTV could not independently verify the footage, but it formed the crux of the manhunt. The incident took place nearly two weeks ago, when the 10-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly sexually assaulted in full public view. A case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered, and special police teams were deployed to trace the suspect. Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai had urged the police to act swiftly, warning that "the suspect roaming free is a threat to society." The opposition AIADMK also raised questions over women and children's safety, especially in light of a recent spurt in such crimes in the state. In its defence, the ruling DMK and Tamil Nadu Police claimed that in every such case, swift action was taken and pointed to fast-tracked investigations and convictions in several recent high-profile cases - including the Anna University sexual assault, and the assault of a pregnant woman on a moving train, both of which resulted in life sentences for the accused.

13 teenagers sexually assault boy, stab him 24 times for being rival gang 'informer'

A teenage boy was sexually assaulted and stabbed by a gang of 13 people, most of whom were minors themselves, on suspicion of him being an informer for a rival gang. Police officials outside Delhi Public School, RK Puram, after it received bomb threat email on Saturday. (Screengrab/X/@ANI) The incident took place during the intervening night of June 29-30. The boy's body was found dumped in a canal in Delhi on July 1. The Samaypur Badli Police Station received a PCR call regarding the body, lying completely naked with a scarf wrapped around his neck, at 3.10 pm, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami said, according to PTI. Following this, the body was sent for post-mortem, with the report revealing 24 stab wounds, along with a 'blunt force in the anus'. Nine of the people who were involved in the crime, including key accused Krishna alias Bhola (19), are in police custody, PTI reported. Krishna allegedly planned the murder because he believed that the victim was an informer for his rivals – the Badhwar brothers. The brothers – Monu and Sonu – are currently in jail on charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for illegal activities including robberies and illegal liquor trade. Krishna had been assaulted by the brothers around Diwali the previous year, and was planning to avenge the incident, an officer said, according to PTI. He, along with his aides, kidnapped the victim from Veer Chowk Bazar and took him to a spot near the Munak Canal, where he was stripped and assaulted, and eventually murdered. A case under sections 103 (1) (murder) and 238 (b) (causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information to screen an offender) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered against the accused. Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, dealing with aggravated penetrative sexual assault, was also added to the case. How did the police trace the accused? Three of the accused were arrested from a Kanwar camp in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh on July 18, after the police disguised themselves as Kanwariyas. The three – identified as Monu and two other minors – who were trying to pass off as Kanwariyas had travelled from Haridwar to Meerut, where they were staying at the Kanwar camp, PTI reported. The police traced the three after tracking the social media activity of one of the minors. They were arrested on July 18 by police teams from Delhi and Meerut. The three confessed to the crime during questioning, while also revealing the identity of three more accused – eepak, Chandan and Sachin. The police had earlier arrested two men and nabbed four juveniles. The police said that efforts to arrest the remaining accused were underway, adding that they were working with a legal team to secure maximum punishment for them. With PTI inputs
