Is the United States denying entry to foreigners due to political memes? The bizarre question arose after a Norwegian traveller claimed he was stopped from entering America as immigration agents took objection to a doctored photo of a bald US Vice President JD Vance on his phone.
The claims were soon picked up by the media and blew up. As the story grabbed eyeballs around the world, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued a clarification.

Let's take a closer look.
Was tourist not allowed into US over Vance meme?
A Norwegian tourist claimed he was denied entry into the US after authorities found a meme of JD Vance on his phone at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport on June 11.
His accusation was first reported by Norwegian news outlet Nordlys. Mads Mikkelsen, 21, told the local newspaper upon his return that the US officials had threatened to fine him $5,000 (Rs 4.27 lakh) or imprison him for five years if he refused to provide them with his phone password.
The Norwegian tourist complied with their demand and unlocked his phone, allowing agents to go through the phone.
He said that was when they spotted the Vance meme. Mikkelsen told BBC, 'The agent seemed to be very antagonised by the image. He asked me why I had it saved on my phone.'
The young man said he explained to them that it was only a meme, but the agent, he said, replied: 'It's very clearly a piece of dangerous extremist propaganda'.
Mikkelsen said he was denied entry into the US after the CBP agents looked into his phone and sent him back to Norway.
US rejects tourist's claim
As the Norwegian traveller's claims drew global attention, the US Customs and Border Patrol and its umbrella Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have jumped in to address the reports.
Issuing a 'fact check' on X, the CBP wrote: 'Mads Mikkelsen was not denied entry for any memes or political reasons, it was for his admitted drug use.'

Homeland Security deputy secretary Tricia McLaughlin called the story 'false' and 'BS' in a post on X. She also insisted that Mikkelsen was not allowed entry into the US after he admitted to using drugs.
In a post on Facebook, Homeland Security said, 'FACT CHECK. Claims that Mads Mikkelsen was denied entry because of a meme are unequivocally FALSE.'
'TRUTH: Mikkelsen was refused entry into the US for his admitted drug use. Only those who respect our laws and follow our rules will be welcomed into our country.'
'Political reasons' were not to blame either, CBP claimed on X.
Mikkelsen has admitted that the US agents came across a second photo of a wooden weed pipe. He told Nordlys that when questioned, he told them that he had tried marijuana once in Germany and once in New Mexico.
He said he did not believe that was relevant, as the drug was legal in both places.

Mikkelsen, not to be confused with Danish actor of the same name, said he was also questioned about drug smuggling, terror plots, and right-wing extremism, as per the Independent report.
The Norwegian youth claimed that the agents forced him to provide a blood sample. The episode has left a bad taste in his mouth.
Mikkelsen said, 'I would not return while the current government is in power.'
Can US agents check phones at borders?
Border officers in the US are authorised to look into phones, laptops and other electronic devices at ports of entry.
'These searches have been used to identify and combat terrorist activity, child pornography, drug smuggling, human smuggling, bulk cash smuggling, human trafficking, export control violations, intellectual property rights violations and visa fraud, among other violations,' the CBP says on its website.
'Furthermore, border searches of electronic devices are often integral to determining an individual's intentions upon entry to the United States and thus provide additional information relevant to admissibility of foreign nationals under US immigration laws.'

Trump tightens immigration laws
Foreign individuals and immigrants have been increasingly targeted under the Trump administration, which has cracked down on immigration and national security.
In March, a French researcher was denied entry after customs agents found a 'personal opinion on the Trump administration's research policy' on his phone.
Last week, an Australian writer said he was deported to Melbourne over his reporting on the Columbia University protests.
The DHS announced in April that its agents would start screening the social media accounts of immigrants for so-called 'antisemitic activity'.
Those seeking US student visas have also been told to change the privacy settings on their social media profiles to 'public.'
The US State Department recently asked diplomats to review social media profiles for 'any indications of hostility towards the citizens, culture, government, institutions or founding principles of the United States.'

AP govt disburses `400 cr through CMRF in one year

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government disbursed a whopping Rs 400 crore through the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF) in the last one year, thereby helping scores of families in the State. Through the CMRF, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu extended substantial aid to those suffering from serious health conditions. This financial assistance benefitted those who were not covered under the NTR Vaidya Seva scheme. Unlike any previous government, Naidu has allocated massive funds through CMRF, standing by the people in need, officials say. Compared to 2014, the state's financial situation in 2024 is in bad shape. 'The government is struggling to pay even small bills. Despite this, it is balancing welfare schemes and development programmes, launching several initiatives within just one year. In this context, the Chief Minister has been providing aid through CMRF without hesitation. A significant portion of the petitions and grievances submitted to the CM involve requests for CMRF assistance. Recognizing the importance of this, the Chief Minister has established a mechanism to resolve petitions within hours or days,' an official told Hans India For those treated in private hospitals for critical illnesses, the government reimburses expenses through the CMRF. Many families are being financially devastated by unexpected health crises. In such cases, people apply for aid either directly or through MLAs. Poor families who fall into debt due to major illnesses are greatly benefiting from the CMRF's support. According to available statistics, the state government in undivided Andhra Pradesh spent only Rs 758 crore under the CMRF from 2004 to 2014. But after taking over as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 2014 post-bifurcation, Chandrababu provided Rs 1,533 crore through CMRF over five years, benefiting 2,23,742 individuals across 13 districts. This amount was more than what three Chief Ministers provided over 10 years in the united AP. However, when the YSRCP government came to power in 2019, the support from the CMRF declined sharply. Due to lack of access to the Chief Minister's Office, lack of a system for collecting petitions, absence of MLA appointments, and a generally closed-door approach, most applications did not even reach CM's desk. Between 2019 and 2024, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the then chief minister, released only Rs 897 crore through the CMRF. After returning to power for the fourth time in 2024 with a historic mandate, Naidu started allocating more funds for CMRF. The Chief Minister is also meeting common citizens daily at the Secretariat, personally receiving petitions. Whether at the party office or during district visits, wherever he receives petitions, he immediately instructs officials to act on them. As a result, within just one year, Chandrababu sanctioned around Rs 400 through the CMRF, benefiting 35,000 individuals. Depending on the severity of the medical condition, Letters of Credit (LOCs) are issued immediately to ensure timely treatment. Based on the family's financial condition and the seriousness of the illness, amounts ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 30 lakh are being disbursed to poor people. In the past year alone, 3,354 people have received LoCs worth Rs 89 crore. TDP state president Palla Srinivasa Rao said the Chief Minister took initiative to help ailing people through CMRF funds. He said poor and middle-class families suffer heavily and fall into debt traps due to health issues. Therefore, the Chief Minister is personally disbursing CMRF cheques to the family members of ailing people including those above poverty line. Citing an example, he said that he handed over a cheque for Rs 20 lakh from the CMRF to a poor man in his constituency, Gajuwaka, in Visakhapatnam. Thanking the Chief Minister for sanctioning financial assistance under the CMRF, B Rajeswari, a senior citizen and resident of Vijayawada, who underwent an operation, opined that the timely help from the Chief Minister saved her life.

BJP councillors, police clash during march to corporation office over laptop graft allegation

Thiruvananthapuram: The protest march by BJP activists and councillors towards the corporation main office on Saturday turned violent as they clashed with police over allegations of corruption in a laptop distribution initiative run by the civic body. The agitators accused the administration of misappropriating public funds meant to benefit students and demanded a transparent probe. As the march reached the gates of the corporation office around 11.30am, police used water cannons to disperse the crowd. The situation grew tense as some protesters attempted to jump over barricades, prompting further police intervention. The police and the protesters even had a scuffle before the cops forced them to disperse. The protest, which was inaugurated by BJP district president Karamana Jayan, follows dramatic scenes from Thursday's corporation council meeting, which turned chaotic after LDF councillors levelled serious graft charges against two BJP councillors, Punnakkamugal's P V Manju and Pappanamcode's G S Asha Nath. The councillors were accused of illegally diverting Rs 2 lakh collected as user fees by Haritha Karma Sena. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo The council meeting descended into disorder when BJP councillors disrupted proceedings in protest. Some reportedly stormed the mayor's dais and allegedly manhandled deputy mayor P K Raju, resulting in the abrupt suspension of the session. Following the incident, the corporation secretary lodged a formal police complaint. In Saturday's protest, Museum police registered a case against the demonstrators. Defending the protest, BJP leaders claimed the corporation's laptop initiative was mired in corruption and a betrayal of student beneficiaries. The corporation, however, refuted the allegations, calling the protest a politically motivated attempt to divert attention from the corruption charges against BJP members. "We followed proper procedures for procurement and distribution," said a senior official of the corporation. "Let there be a performance audit, but there is no room for such political theatrics and violence," the official added.
