CONCACAF Champions Cup: Whitecaps, Galaxy advnace
March 13 - Second-half goals from Edier Ocampo and Brian White led the Whitecaps to a 2-2 draw with Monterrey on Wednesday in Torreon, Mexico, as Vancouver won the teams' CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16 match.
The teams finished the two-game, total-goal series level at 3-3, but the Whitecaps advance to the quarterfinals thanks to the away-goals tiebreaker. The sides played to a 1-1 draw last week in Vancouver.
On Wednesday, Monterrey grabbed the advantage on a goal by Sergio Canales in the fourth minute.
Ocampo equalized in the 56th minute, firing a 12-yard right-footed shot inside the far post to complete an impressive team counterattack.
White put the Whitecaps on top in the 78th minute after Vancouver stole the ball at the top of the Monterrey 18-yard box. The ball popped free to White, who had time to play the ball onto his right foot and roll the ball inside the right post.
A penalty-kick goal by Monterrey's Sergio Ramos deep into second-half stoppage time wasn't enough for the hosts.
Galaxy 4, Herediano 1
Julian Aude and Miguel Berry scored in the first half at Carson, Calif., as Los Angeles overcame a first-leg deficit to oust Herediano by a 4-2 aggregate score.
Herediano won the series opener 1-0 last week in Costa Rica.
In the 30th minute on Wednesday, Aude hit a half-volley from just above the penalty area that flew inside the left post. Eight minutes later, Berry's right-footed shot from 6 yards out bounced before landing in the net.
Second-half tallies from Gabriel Pec and Christian Ramirez expanded the Galaxy's lead before Jose De Jesus Gonzalez scored a consolation goal for Herediano in the 82nd minute.
The Galaxy advance to face Mexico's Tigres UANL in the quarterfinals.

Key Rangers backroom figure departs for Liverpool role
White had been First Team Physical Performance and Reconditioning Coach at the Ibrox club since April 2024. Read more: White has now joined Premier League champions Liverpool as First Team Physical Performance Coach. And he might not be the only man with a Rangers background at Anfield next season. Indeed, former Ibrox boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst is reportedly close to being appointed to a role in Arme Slot's backroom team. The Dutchman spent just under a year in charge of Rangers, leading the club he turned out for as a player to the 2022 Europa League final. Liverpool are now 'close' to appointing Van Bronckhorst to their backroom staff, claims The Athletic. He will replace his fellow countryman John Heitinga, who recently left Anfield to take on the role of head coach at Eredivisie outfit Ajax. Van Bronckhorst spent a brief spell in charge of Besiktas after leaving Rangers before taking up a role on UEFA's Executive Committee.

Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford to fight in Las Vegas for unified super middleweight title
Boxing's most-anticipated fight in years, Canelo Alvarez against Terence Crawford, will be in Las Vegas on Sept. 13 after much speculation that it would take place in Saudi Arabia. The fight for the unified super middleweight championship is part of Alvarez's reported $400 million, minimum four-fight deal with Riyadh Season. One of those fights can be in another location, and Las Vegas has become the boxing home for the Mexican champion. Riyadh Season is working with UFC CEO Dana White to promote the fight. This is White's first foray into boxing as part of an effort to become a major player in the sport. 'Are you kidding me that the first boxing fight I'm going to get to promote is Canelo vs. Crawford?' White said in a statement. 'It's literally a once in a lifetime fight.' Alvarez (63-2-2) unified the division by defeating William Scull by unanimous decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on May 3. Crawford, who is from Omaha, Nebraska, attended that bout, and the four-division champ who is 41-0 announced in the ring with Alvarez that they would meet in September. 'I'm ready to show once again that I am the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world,' Alvarez said in a statement.
