Inter star stranded in Iran after Israel attacks ahead of Club World Cup opener

Metroa day ago

Inter Milan striker Medhi Taremi has been left stranded in Iran following attacks from Israel in Tehran.
Taremi, 32, is part of the Inter squad taking part in the Club World Cup in the USA over the next month with their first match taking place on Wednesday against Mexican side Monterrey.
Taremi returned to his homeland to accept Iran's Footballer of the Year award and was planning to fly straight out to Los Angeles to link up with his teammates.
However, the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel which saw Iranian military and nuclear targets hit with missile attacks has resulted in all flights from Iranian airports grounded.
Inter are in 'constant contact' with the striker, Sky Italia report, as they seek to find a solution that will allow him to leave Iran and join up with his teammates.
Iran was targeted with several waves of airstrikes on Thursday and Friday, launching retaliatory attacks on Israel overnight.
More than 78 people have been killed in Iran, including four of its top security chiefs, with 320 wounded, most of them civilians. Three people died in Israel, with dozens more injured in Iranian strikes.

Taremi had also returned to Iran play for the national team in World Cup qualifying matches against Qatar and North Korea, the last of which took place at Teran's Aazadi Stadium on Tuesday. More Trending
Taremi played for Iran in both games against Qatar and North Korea, scoring in the latter.
While not a regular starter, Taremi has been an important member of the Inter squad.
The former Porto star remained on the bench in the brutal Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain but has made 43 appearances in all competitions this season with three goals and nine assists.
Inter will play Monterrey, Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds and Argentine giants River Plate in their Club World Cup group phase, led by recently appointed head coach Christian Chivu.

Why are Liverpool not in the Club World Cup and Chelsea are?

The Club World Cup is underway in America but there is still some confusion among fans as to why some teams are there and others are not. The tournament has been completely revamped this year to effectively become an entirely new event, now featuring 32 teams from around the globe. 12 teams from Europe are involved, four from Asia, four from Africa, four from North and Central America, six from South America and one from Oceania. Despite UEFA getting easily the most slots in the tournament there are some surprisingly big clubs that will not be playing in the States. Barcelona are not involved, neither are Italian champions Napoli, nor are Premier League champs Liverpool. Meanwhile Chelsea, who were not even in the Champions League last season, are playing in the Club World Cup, getting their campaign underway against Los Angeles FC on Monday. The likes of Porto and RB Salzburg are also involved, so how were the clubs playing at this year's Club World Cup decided? The places at the Club World Cup were handed out based on clubs' performances over the last four years in the Champions League. That goes back to 2021 when Chelsea won the Champions League and includes the next two winners, Manchester City and Real Madrid. The most recent edition was not included, but Paris Saint-Germain qualified anyway as the other European teams involved were decided by a UEFA ranking system based on Champions League performance. More Trending However, a maximum of two teams from a European nation were able to compete, so Liverpool could not join Chelsea and Manchester City at the Club World Cup. Barcelona were behind Atletico Madrid on the UEFA ranking pathway, so missed out as well. An exception would be made if more than two different teams from the same country won the Champions League in the allocated time period.
