Justin Herbert surprises teammates with red-tinted contact lenses at Chargers camp

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is testing out tinted contact lenses as training camp opens.
He wore them Thursday under sunny skies after trying them out earlier in the week while working with the team's rookies.
'They're like sunglasses,' he said. 'They really helped. I didn't have to squint nearly as much.'
Herbert tried wearing a tinted visor a couple years ago and didn't like having to constantly clean it off.
The contacts make Herbert's blue eyes appear red.
'When I stepped in the huddle, I think some of the guys were a little surprised,' he said, smiling, 'but they were like, 'Oh, we're going to score.''
Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker told 'The Herd with Colin Cowherd' that he and Herbert wore the red contacts to dinner recently.

'We looked like we were vampires,' Dicker said, adding that initially people didn't recognize them. 'We were like, 'This is incredible.''
Herbert said he thinks he could wear the contacts in games with a medical prescription due to sensitive eyes.
'If I'm able to see the field better because of it, it definitely helps,' he said.

Boston Celtics sign coach Joe Mazzulla to a multi-year contract extension

BOSTON (AP) — Boston Celtics president Brad Stevens has said throughout the offseason that that team wanted Joe Mazzulla to be its coach for a long time. It made that more than a proclamation Friday, announcing it has signed Mazzulla to a multi-year contract extension. Length and details of the new deal were not released. In a statement, Mazzulla called his new pact with the team 'a blessing.' 'I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children,' Mazzulla said. 'We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad's mentorship, and the support of our staff. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston.' Mazzulla, 37, is coming off his third season as Boston's coach and has guided the team to the playoffs each season, including the franchise's 18th NBA title to cap the 2023-24 season. He was the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals since the 1968-69 season, when 35-year-old Bill Russell led the Celtics to the championship as a player-coach. Under Mazzulla, the Celtics have won at least 57 games each of those seasons and topped 60 victories in each of the last two. Though Stevens has never publicly discussed the details of Mazzulla's contract, the coach was initially given an extension shortly after having the interim tag lifted in February 2023. Stevens confirmed in June that Mazzulla had received at least one additional extension prior to his latest one. 'He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans,' Stevens said in a statement. 'He's worked hard and accomplished amazing things in his first three years as a head coach — including averaging over 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a gifted leader who brings a consistent commitment to learning, improving, and maximizing each day we get to compete for the Boston Celtics.' Mazzulla originally joined the Celtics in 2019 and spent the next three seasons as an assistant before being interim head coach after former boss Ime Udoka was suspended by the team prior to the start of the 2022-23 season. ___ AP NBA:

Vitesse Arnhem ‘deeply disappointed' as court upholds license withdrawal

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Vitesse Arnhem lost a last-ditch bid Friday to get back its license to play in the Dutch professional leagues, possibly signalling an end to one of the oldest soccer clubs in the Netherlands. A Dutch court rejected an injunction request by Vitesse Arnhem that sought to halt a decision by the Netherlands' soccer association in July to withdraw its professional license. In a statement on its website, the club said it was 'deeply disappointed and distressed' by the decision. 'We have done everything we can in the past period to meet the set conditions, in collaboration with the investors and other stakeholders,' said Michel Schaay, chairman of De Sterkhouders, a group of investors that sought to save the club. 'The fact that this has been deemed insufficient is painful for us. Above all, for our supporters, employees, and the city of Arnhem.' Vitesse was established in 1892, initially as a cricket club. A soccer team was added later that year. Its only major Dutch title came when it won the KNVB Beker knockout cup competition in 2017. The Central Netherlands District Court said in a statement that a judge ruled that the Dutch soccer association KNVB 'did not violate the licensing regulations and could reasonably have reached this decision.' The judge who made the decision also said the ruling by the association's licensing commission was 'sufficiently reasoned.' Vitesse has been wrangling with the association for years over its status. Last year, it was docked 18 points and relegated from the top-flight Eredivisie while under investigation for ties to sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, the former owner of Chelsea. The KNVB said in a written reaction that 'it has become painfully clear how significant the impact can be if a club structurally fails to comply with the licensing system.' 'Losing a professional football club's license is a devastating blow, not only for the club itself, but also for the fans, sponsors, partners, employees, and everyone else directly or indirectly involved with Vitesse,' the KNVB added. 'We fully understand that this is painful and a very difficult time for them.' The club said Friday that it's future is now unclear. Vitesse had been scheduled to play its first match of the new season in the second tier of the Dutch professional league on Saturday against Almere City. 'The club is investigating the possibilities,' it said. 'In the meantime, the leadership remains in talks with stakeholders to secure the continuation of soccer in Arnhem.' ___ AP soccer:

Lewandowski to miss game because of hamstring problem a week before Barcelona's season opener

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Robert Lewandowski will miss Barcelona's friendly match on Sunday because of a hamstring problem, the Catalan club said Friday. Barcelona will host Italian club Como in the traditional curtain-raising Joan Gamper Trophy game before its La Liga campaign starts Aug. 16 against Mallorca. 'The striker is unavailable for Sunday's game and his recovery will determine his return,' the team said in a statement. Lewandowski scored 42 goals total in 52 appearances last season to help Barcelona win the La Liga title. His 27 league goals was second only to Kylian Mbappe's 31. The 36-year-old Poland international is beginning his fourth season at Barcelona. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. ___ AP soccer:
