Residents of 30 villages hold conference against Punjab govt's land acquisition in Ludhiana
Residents from nearly 30 villages held a conference Tuesday at Dream Villa Palace in the Banohar village, Ludhiana, in response to the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority's (GLADA) decision to acquire over 24,000 acres of land to develop urban estates. Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) Punjab unit also supported this conference.
They announced that the next meeting of the SKM will be held on May 24 in Mullanpur, where the future course of action will be outlined to compel the Punjab government to withdraw the controversial notification. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali and Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira also attended the conference. The village where the conference was organised also has a portion of land set to be acquired by GLADA, according to available information.
Kanwaljit Khanna, a resident of Jagraon and leader of BKU Dakaunda, said, 'The Bhagwant Mann-led government is launching an assault on fertile agricultural land through GLADA in 53 villages in the Ludhiana, Moga, Ferozepur, and Nawanshahr districts. We will not allow it to happen.'
Addressing the gathering, legislators Khaira and Ayali and former MLA Tarsem Jodhan stated that land mafias pushed from Delhi are now exploiting Punjab under administrative orders. They condemned the land acquisition process, alleging that no proper survey was conducted and that panchayats, gram sabhas, and villagers were deliberately kept in the dark. They further accused the AAP of openly siding with corporate interests.
Ayali is the MLA of the Dakha constituency in the Ludhiana district, and many villages of this constituency are part of the land acquisition process.
Manjeet Singh Dhaner, state president of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Ekta Dakaunda; Manpreet Singh, block president, BKU Rajewal; Jasdev Singh Lalto of Dasmesh Kisan Mazdoor Union, and several other farmer union leaders called on villagers to hold gram sabha meetings and pass resolutions rejecting the government's land acquisition notification.
Sukhbir Badal meets farmers
On Tuesday, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal visited villages and met farmers. He said, 'The AAP government, led by Bhagwant Mann—already a failure on all fronts and acting under the command of Delhi-based leaders—is now preparing to launch a major land grab targeting farmers' land. In the Ludhiana district alone, around 24,000 acres of land across 40 villages are being acquired under the land pooling scheme. This is a new method devised to loot thousands of crores of rupees, and the SAD strongly opposes it.'
SAD also announced that it will stage a massive protest on May 29 outside the office of the chief administrator of GLADA in Ludhiana.

"These failures reflect the BJP's inability to govern and their dismantling of the systems AAP painstakingly built to serve the people," Garg alleged. "The BJP has dismantled everything AAP built in Delhi. People of Delhi are already regretting their decision and are openly saying, 'We made a mistake, we want AAP back,'" Garg claimed. Garg also questioned Sirsa's connection with Punjab, describing him as an opportunist from Haryana, meddling in Punjab's politics. Tensions in Manipur over arrest rumours of volunteers of Meitei outfit
Two journalists and a civilian were injured as tensions flared in Imphal city late on Saturday evening following unconfirmed reports of the arrest of five volunteers of Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei group, including one of the group's commanders, people familiar with the matter said. An irate mob stormed the Kwakeithel Police Outpost in Imphal West, demanding the immediate release of the arrested individuals. In response, security forces fired several rounds to disperse the crowd. During the incident, at least three people, including two journalists, sustained injuries. According to unconfirmed reports, the arrests were made at around 2.30pm by a team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba was also seen at the scene, attempting to speak with senior security personnel regarding the situation. In a purported video circulated on social media groups, Leishemba could be heard saying, 'We tried very hard to bring peace. If you do such things, how will peace come? Arrest me along with the MLA....' There was not official statement from the Manipur police till the time of going to press. They are expected to meet in the national capital on Monday. This is the first general meeting since the pact was put in abeyance last year. While there was no confirmation from the MHA or the Manipur-based groups, a person aware of the details said all representatives from SoO will attend the meeting. 'All representatives from the SoO groups will be in Delhi. This is the first general meeting called by the MHA. We do not know if Manipur state administration officials will be present or not. It was a tripartite agreement between our groups, state government and Centre to suspend all operations from both sides,' this person said requesting anonymity. The tripartite SoO agreement was signed by the Centre, the Manipur government and Kuki militant groups in August 2008, and was renewed every year until February 28 last year when it was kept abeyance. The renewal process was halted after allegations against SoO group cadres indulging in the ethnic clashes in Manipur and training village defence volunteers — the groups have denied both charges. The person cited above said that over the last year, SoO groups have addressed some queries raised by the MHA. 'The ground rules for the pact were set to be revised so MHA has asked SoO groups many questions. All these were presented to the MHA. We expect something positive from the meeting,' the official added. The questions pertained to location of camps, the weapons that are in a double lock system and the need for having new camps. At the time of the signing of agreement in 2008, the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and United People's Front (UPF) agreed to cease any form of violence. The central and state governments also agreed that no force (army, paramilitary, or state police) would launch operations against the signatories as long as they abide by the terms of the agreement. However, the SoO was unilaterally suspended by the Biren Singh government on March 2023 — roughly two months before the ethnic clashes broke out — saying that some members of the groups were illegal migrants. The suspension, along with a Manipur high court order that directed the state to ensure Meiteis get the scheduled tribes status, are believed to be triggers for the violence that has roiled the state for over two years. A senior security official, who asked not to be named, said, 'Agencies have regularly given reports about the SoO groups. There have been cases of SoO militants being arrested in some cases of violence during the last two years. It is a critical issue. Whatever happens to the SoO pact will definitely have an impact in Manipur. They are influential and have a lot of clout among not just Kuki-Zo civilians but also their political leaders.' The earlier rules of the SoO pact directed cadres of the militant groups to stay in designated camps, with the routine administration of camps being handled by the groups. The rules also mandated that no more than 20% of cadres will be allowed to leave the camp at any given time. State government and joint monitoring group (JMG) members were to conduct inspections at the camp to check for violations. All weapons were to be held within the camp's armoury in a double locking system, with one key being with the group and other with the concerned security force.

20% ethanol blending achieved after policy changes in 2014, says Fadnavis
1 2 Pune: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday lauded the efforts of Pune-based Praj Industries for its contribution to biofuel generation and said the sector suffered due to the lack of a policy during the UPA-led govt's tenure. It was only after NDA formed govt in 2014 that did India start achieving 20% ethanol blending with petrol that could help save crores of rupees in foreign exchange, he said. "The period from 2009 to 2014 was a struggle not only for Praj Industries but for the entire country. Before that, during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's govt, he formed a committee to study ethanol blending and a decision was made for 5% blending with petrol. However, the subsequent govt failed to implement the decision effectively," he said in Pune. The CM further said whenever the demand to increase the ethanol blending percentage was raised (during the UPA tenure), some people would claim that a developing country like India could not afford it by compromising food security. "The scenario changed after 2014 when the NDA govt, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, brought changes in the policy to increase the percentage. The country has achieved 20% ethanol blending due to which India is saving crores of rupees in foreign exchange, which we would have to spend on importing fuel," Fadnavis said at an event organised to release a book written by the founder president of Praj Industries, Pramod Chaudhari.
