Acting Chief Justice calls for urgent Judicial Appointments Commission meeting
A report by Free Malaysia Today (FMT), citing unnamed sources, stated that the meeting is scheduled for 3pm today (July 4), despite Section 13(2) of the JAC Act 2009 requiring at least 10 days' written notice to be given to commission members.
Hasnah, who assumed her duties yesterday following the mandatory retirement of Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, now chairs the commission by virtue of her position as the nation's top judge.
"The purpose of the urgent meeting is unclear," a source was quoted as saying in the report.
The JAC, which is tasked with recommending candidates for appointments to the Federal Court, Court of Appeal and High Courts, currently has only seven members.
This follows the recent retirements of Tengku Maimun and Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim.
In addition to Hasnah, the current members include Chief Judge of Sabah
and Sarawak Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, who sits on the commission by virtue of his position.
Other members, appointed as eminent persons by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, are former attorney-general Tan Sri Idrus Harun, retired Federal Court judge Datuk Seri Zainun Ali, former Sarawak attorney-general Datuk Talat Mahmood Abdul Rashid and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) legal adviser Hartini Saripan.
Federal Court judge Datuk Seri Zabariah Yusof was also appointed to the commission in March by the prime minister.
According to FMT, sources said a list of nominees for the country's top judicial posts, including the chief justice, president of the Court of Appeal, chief judge of Malaya and chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak had already been submitted to the Prime Minister's Office during Tengku Maimun's tenure.
Under Article 122B(1) of the Federal Constitution, judicial appointments are made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, acting on the advice of the prime minister and after consulting the Conference of Rulers.
The next meeting of the Conference of Rulers is scheduled to take place in two weeks.

Esscom brings benefits to ESSZone while maintaining security
TAWAU: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) which was established 14 years ago has maintained its excellent performance not only in creating peace but also in bringing benefits to the community in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone). Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Esscom remained committed to its core task of creating peace and through that, many government plans could be implemented, including the Madani Adopted Village Programme in Kampung Inderasabah here. "Esscom, with an allocation of RM1 million, has selected Kampung Inderasabah to carry out several physical and non-physical infra projects," he told reporters after officiating the Esscom Madani Adopted Village in Kampung Inderasabah on Friday. He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had previously announced an allocation of RM200 million for the implementation of the programme this year, which involved 200 villages nationwide, including 12 or 13 villages under the Home Ministry. Esscom chief executive officer Datuk Dr Jamaluddin Mohd Ali said the selection of Kampung Inderasabah was based on several important justifications, including the unique security challenges faced. He said the justification was also seen from the aspect of potential for eco-tourism and fisheries development as well as the geographical location of the village which is close to the border of the waters of neighbouring Indonesia. "The Finance Ministry agreed with Esscom's proposal and approved RM1 million on March 1, projects received approval from the ministry, namely the construction of the village entrance gate, upgrading the pavilion, the open hall of SK Inderasabah, the futsal court and the Al-Furqon Mosque. "Other projects include the upgrading and installation of solar street lights in the village, repairing the village footbridge, the jetty at the base, the Kemas Daycare Center area, and the church in addition to implementing programmes with the local community," he said. Jamaluddin said Esscom, in collaboration with Tawau Municipal Council and GiatMara Tawau as the implementing agency, would ensure that the projects involved ran smoothly and were given priority so that they could be completed this year. "Esscom also hopes that through this initiative, it can further strengthen the relationship between Esscom and the community in ESSZone, thus ensuring Eastern Sabah area continues to be peaceful, prosperous and resilient," he added. Apas assemblyman Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said for the past 14 years, Kampung Inderasabah community has been a strategic partner for Esscom, whether in terms of prevention of cross-border crimes, including involvement in community programmes. No urgent need for major DBP Act amendments, says director-general
BACHOK: There is no pressing requirement for significant amendments to the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Act, as existing legislation already reinforces the use of the National Language in official matters. Government circulars and other legal provisions ensure proper language use across public services, according to DBP Director-General Dr Hazami Jahari. He highlighted that language enforcement is firmly rooted in Article 152 of the Federal Constitution, which designates Malay as Malaysia's official language. Additional support comes from the Education Act, local authority bylaws, and regulations on product labeling and public advertising. 'After 69 years of DBP's existence, we face no major issues in enforcing the National Language because current laws are adequate. What we need now is stronger implementation and commitment from agencies, local authorities, and society,' he told reporters after launching the East Region Writers' Camp. The proposed amendments aim to expand DBP's role internationally and establish it as the sole certifying body for language courses and publications. Another key proposal is requiring DBP endorsement for official recognition of language-related goods and publications. Hazami stressed that legal measures alone cannot uphold the National Language. Instead, fostering love and responsibility among Malaysians is crucial. 'Countries like Japan and Thailand thrive linguistically without punitive laws, relying instead on national pride and awareness,' he said.
