June 22 - Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the third inning Saturday night for the New York Mets, who snapped a seven-game losing streak with an 11-4 win over the host Philadelphia Phillies in the middle game of a three-game series.
The Mets moved into a tie for first place in the National League East with the Phillies, who had a three-game winning streak stopped as they lost for just the third time in 12 games.
Nimmo and Soto had two homers apiece for the Mets, who hit seven round-trippers -- all solo shots. The seven homers were one shy of the franchise record set in a 16-7 win over Philadelphia on Aug. 24, 2015.
The consecutive homers by Lindor, Nimmo and Soto off rookie Mick Abel (2-1) put the Mets ahead for good and marked the 10th time in team history a trio of players have gone back-to-back-to-back.
Giants 3, Red Sox 2
Rafael Devers hit his first home run for his new team against his former team and Landen Roupp combined with three relievers on a six-hitter as San Francisco held on to beat visiting Boston.
Acquired last Sunday from the Red Sox, Devers had gone 3-for-17 as a Giant before launching his 16th home run of the season -- his first in a San Francisco uniform -- to left field against Brayan Bello (3-2) in the third. Heliot Ramos also took Bello deep, a solo shot in the first. Roupp (5-5) limited Boston to three singles over six innings, striking out seven.
Trevor Story went 3-for-4 for the Red Sox, who fell to 3-2 on their nine-game western swing. They avoided a shutout in the ninth, scoring a pair of runs against Giants reliever Camilo Doval. But with the potential tying run in scoring position, Doval retired Marcelo Mayer and Romy Gonzalez on ground balls to wrap up his 12th save.
Yankees 9, Orioles 0
Four home runs backed up New York's second one-hitter of the year in a rout of Baltimore. Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt (4-3) threw seven hitless innings.
Ben Rice, Trent Grisham, Anthony Volpe and J.C. Escarra all hit solo shots in a 14-hit effort for the Yankees. This marks the third consecutive double-digit hit showing for New York. Volpe recorded three hits, tying for a team-high, after going hitless in his previous 25 at-bats.
Orioles starter Zach Eflin (6-4) only managed three innings and surrendered 6 earned runs on 10 hits. Despite the decisive loss, Baltimore is still 6-3 in its last nine games.
Rays 8, Tigers 3

Jake Rogers (groundout), Jahmai Jones (double) and Dillon Dingler (sacrifice fly) drove in runs for the Tigers. Opener Brant Hurter (2-3) surrendered four unearned runs in two-thirds of the first inning before yielding to Sawyer Gipson-Long for 6 1/3 innings (four runs, six hits).

Carlos Correa doubled for Minnesota's only extra-base hit as Jose Quintana earned the shutout win. The Twins have lost eight of nine games.

Fernando Tatis Jr. broke open a close game with a three-run homer and San Diego evened its weekend series vs. visiting Kansas City.
Tatis broke a streak of 101 plate appearances without a homer, dating back to May 27, by lining a Taylor Clarke fastball an estimated 380 feet into the seats in left-center field with two outs in the seventh. His 14th homer of the season scored Jose Iglesias and Bryce Johnson.
Dylan Cease (3-6) picked up the win, allowing just three hits and a run in 6 2/3 innings, with three walks and four strikeouts. Noah Cameron (2-3) absorbed the loss, permitting two runs on five hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings while whiffing two.

FedEx founder Fred Smith dies aged 80

FedEx founder Fred Smith, the billionaire father of NFL coach Arthur Smith, has died at the age of 80 according to multiple reports. The elder Smith began operating FedEx in 1973, with the company going on to become a multinational force providing transportation, e-commerce and more. A cause of death has not yet been provided for Smith, who was also a minority owner of the Washington Commanders from 2003 to 2021. The founder of Memphis, Tennessee-based FedEx was honored by several politicians following his passing, including Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn. 'I am deeply saddened by the passing of Fred Smith,' she said. 'As the founder of FedEx, his leadership and innovation transformed global commerce, and he will be remembered for his relentless drive, patriotism, and commitment to service. 'His legacy will endure not only through the company he built but through the countless lives he touched. Praying for his wife, children, and family.' Smith, who was worth $5.3billion at the time of his passing according to Forbes, was also known for his philanthropy work, as he donated millions of dollars to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation (he served in the Marine Corps for four years before founding FedEx). The businessman stepped down as FedEx's CEO in 2022 (though he continued to serve as executive chairman), and he was hailed as 'the most significant Memphian in history' on Saturday by the city's former mayor Jim Strickland. 'He benefited our city in every way possible and allowed generations of Memphians to achieve the American dream,' Strickland continued. 'God bless Fred Smith. My condolences to the Smith family.' Arthur, 43, was born in Memphis before ultimately becoming an NFL coach. He worked for his hometown franchise, the Titans, for nine years as he rose the ranks from defensive quality control coach to offensive coordinator from 2019-20. He accepted the Falcons' head coaching job in 2021, and was ultimately fired after the 2023 season after posting a 7-10 record for the third consecutive year. Arthur is currently the Steelers' offensive coordinator. And Pittsburgh fans offered some words of support for the coach after they learned of the news. 'Have to feel for Arthur tonight. Losing a parent is rough. RIP Mr Smith,' one said on X.

Stones feeling 'great' after overcoming 'dark days'

Manchester City defender John Stones says he "feels great" after overcoming "dark days" during an injury-hit two Stones last featured for City in February, playing only eight minutes in the Champions League play-off defeat by Real Madrid before he was forced off with a thigh 31-year-old says he is "back fit" after being included in City's 27-man squad for the Club World Cup in the United said: "It's difficult when you're injured, you almost work longer and more, so from that aspect I know the guys mentally and physically have had such a long season. I suppose mentally for me it's been difficult dealing with the injuries and the process."But now I've put that behind me and used this as a mini introduction back before the new season and another trophy for us to hopefully win and get some game time."I've been back in training a few weeks now and that's been going great, trying to do extra running if I need to, if I need to try and get those levels up. Just those little, really small details have made such a big difference."I'm super excited and hopefully can implement these little things that we've made and tweaked, which are going to better me for the future." 'You can feel lonely at times' Stones has been with City for nine seasons after joining from Everton for £ has enjoyed a trophy-filled spell at the club, winning six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cup and four League Cups, while also being capped 83 times for he has played 277 games for his club, he only managed 13 starts last term, including six in the Premier League."I think we all self-doubt as players and feel things, and we want to get back as quick as possible. Maybe that's a downfall sometimes that you try and push too soon," he said."Definitely family [help], I think that's my biggest thing, being around them and having their support."You can feel very lonely at times when you're training by yourself and that's the difficult part of it, being in a team sport, not training with the team when you run out on the pitch in your rehab."Stones has suffered a succession of foot, hamstring and thigh injuries over the past two campaigns, missing a total of 164 days and 33 games, according to Transfermarkt., externalStones said: "There's been points where you think you've been giving all this effort, you dedicate all your life - especially how I approach or go about my life and football, I give everything - on and off the pitch to be here or be ready to play games, and those are the dark days."I think everyone's been through them and think, 'why is this happening?'. You wish it would have gone a different path, but like I said, it's self-doubt, there's a lot of things."All of us have been through different upbringings and challenges through life and what did we do within those situations, was it fight or was it give up?"I was a fighter from a young age, in difficult moments, you have to look at the bigger picture and realise what are your morals, what you believe in, and fight to make it worthwhile."
