Driver trying to set speed record at Utah salt flats race dies after losing control

The Guardian2 days ago
A driver going 283 mph (455 km/h) trying to set a land speed record during a racing event at Utah's famed Bonneville Salt Flats died Sunday after he lost control of his rocket-like vehicle called the Speed Demon, organizers said.
Driver Chris Raschke lost control about two and a half miles into a run and was treated by medical professionals at the scene, but died from his injuries, according to the Southern California Timing Association, which has organized the popular land-speed racing event known as Speed Week since the late 1940s.
For decades, the flat, glasslike white surface has drawn drivers from all over seeking to set new land speed world records and motorcycle and car fans to watch. A remnant of a prehistoric lakebed, the salt flats that are about 100 miles (160km) west of Salt Lake City have also been a backdrop for movies like Independence Day and The World's Fastest Indian.
'Motorsports is inherently a dangerous sport,' said Dennis Sullivan, a car builder and racer who set a land speed record in his 1927 Model T street roadster and serves as president of the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association. 'People get hurt. People get killed. That's just the nature of the sport. It doesn't happen a lot.'
Sullivan said motor sports also have stringent safety requirements – such as stronger roll bars, special tires and more fire extinguishers – that help protect drivers.
The last racing death Sullivan recalled at the flats came in 2016 when Sam Wheeler, a renowned land speed motorcycle racer, crashed at 200 mph (321 km/h) when the high-performance bike he was testing fish-tailed and went airborne.
The Bonneville Salt Flats, which had its first race in 1914, have about 7 miles (11km) for racing and an aquifer underneath that cools the tires of the cars. It's unlike other race venues in that it doesn't have stands. Spectators must stand two-tenths of a mile away from the cars. Raschke lost control of the vehicle about two and a half miles into a run.
It's unknown what speed Raschke was aiming to reach.
The association and the Tooele county sheriff's office are investigating the death, said Sgt Dane Lerdahl, a spokesperson for the law enforcement agency. 'We know it was an accident of some sort,' Lerdahl said.
Raschke, 60, was the driver of a streamliner – a long, narrow, aerodynamic car made to run at high speeds – known as the Speed Demon. He had worked in motor sports for more than four decades.
According to the Speed Demon racing team's site, Raschke worked at the Ventura Raceway in the early 1980s, raced three-wheelers and cars in the mini stock division, learned to fabricate and maintain race cars when working with an acclaimed engine builder and later became a driver for the Speed Demon team. Keith Pedersen, the association's president and Speed Week race director, said Raschke was a respected driver within the racing community and also worked for a company that makes fasteners for race cars.
'He is one of the big ones. He had done all sorts of racing,' Pedersen said.
The Race Week event began Saturday and runs through Friday.

Inside Son Heung-min's departure from Spurs after 10 years

Son Heung-min has completed a record-breaking transfer to Los Angeles FC from Tottenham Hotspur for over £20 million, marking the highest transfer fee ever paid by an MLS club. The 33-year-old South Korea international signed an initial two-year deal, admitting that LAFC was not his initial preferred destination but he was persuaded by the club's general manager. Son spent a decade at Tottenham, scoring 173 goals in 454 appearances and recently captaining the club to Europa League glory. He expressed that leaving Spurs was the 'hardest decision ever' and left him feeling 'very empty', but he sought a new chapter and challenge. The move sees Son reunite with former Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris in Los Angeles, a city with a significant Korean population, ahead of next summer's World Cup in the United States. Emma Raducanu breaks silence on hiring EIGHTH coach as she reveals what ex-Rafael Nadal guru will be working on

EMMA RADUCANU hopes to draw on the 'bank of experience' that Rafa Nadal's former guru has garnered during a stellar coaching career. Yet she accepts she will have to remain 'patient' as she works on improving the 'quality of my shots' in those clutch moments against the elite. 2 2 Four years ago, the then 18-year-old went to New York and dramatically won the US Open title on her debut and as a qualifier. Since then, she has struggled to find consistent form, suffered multiple injuries and undergone three surgeries, which wiped out the second half of the 2023 campaign. There is hope that, aged 22, she can fight her way back to the top and the next ambition is to squeeze into the top-32 seeding spots for this month's New York Slam. Hooking up with Spaniard Francisco Roig, 57, is a real coup and with time, their partnership could transform her into a proper player. Though she has developed a reputation for hiring-and-firing coaches, Raducanu hopes Roig – who worked alongside Nadal 's uncle Toni from 2005 to 2022 and was part of all 22 of the Spaniard's Grand Slam victories – will be the difference. Speaking ahead of the Cincinnati Open, Raducanu said: 'It's going really well. 'It's my second day with him here. But I did a few days in London before I came out here. 'He has obviously got a bank of experience and I am very excited to continue working with him and to have him on my side. 'I am working on the quality of my shots to be better. You know, against the very top that is what it needs. It needs to improve. 'So I am hoping that with time, it does. I am pretty patient. I am going to try and be pretty patient but hopefully that will improve.' Raducanu lost to Iga Swiatek twice this year at the Slams – the Australian Open and French Open – and was then beaten by world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the third round at Wimbledon. The plan was always to have someone full-time in her camp and her team talked with Roig during the grass-court season. A trial in London went well and the first time they could work together was ahead of this week's Ohio event. Mark Petchey will remain by her side – Raducanu is good pals with his daughter Myah – but more as a consultant and friend, given his ongoing and lucrative TV work. The Kent star is seeded 30th in the draw and will face either British No.2 Katie Boulter or Serbian Olga Danilovic in round two.

Awkward moment Son Heung-min nods politely as confused politician tells him to help USA WIN World Cup 2026

SON HEUNG-MIN was involved in an awkward moment as he was announced as an LAFC player. The forward completed his £20million switch from Tottenham on Wednesday. 2 2 He bid an emotional goodbye to Spurs but was all smiles during his introduction in LA. Son even managed to keep up appearances as a local politician made a huge blunder in her welcome to the South Korea captain. Councilwoman Heather Hutt spoke on stage and addressed the Tottenham legend - but got confused over his nationality. She said: 'When the World Cup comes, we are expecting a win here in LA for the USA. 'We are here to support you to get that done.' The politician got mixed up as she referred to the 2026 World Cup, which is being held in the US, Mexico and Canada, with LA one of the host cities. Son, 33, also met LA mayor Karen Bass and city officials and described his moves as a "dream come true". He said: "What can I say, dream come true. LA, what a city." Son revealed it was LAFC general manager John Thorrington who persuaded him to make the switch. He continued: "He just changed my mind, heart, he changed my brain. He showed me the destination where I should be and right now I'm here and I'm so, so excited. "I'm here to win, I will perform and I will definitely show you some exciting football, and we will definitely have success."
