Good and tough times makes it so much more special, says new Springbok captain Jesse Kriel

Jesse Kriel has had some incredible highs and serious lows throughout his journey with the Springboks.
Now the 31-year-old believes that all those experiences will shape his approach when he captains the world champions for the first time in Saturday's clash against the Barbarians at Cape Town Stadium (5.10pm kick-off).
The star outside centre was announced as the skipper early on Friday after regular captain Siya Kolisi was withdrawn as a precautionary measure due to a neck niggle.
Marco van Staden will now wear the No 6 jersey, with Kriel taking charge of the leadership group.
The former Bulls stalwart – who now plays his club rugby for the Canon Eagles in Japan – was going to be the vice-captain this weekend until Kolisi pulled out, and he is delighted with the opportunity.
'I'm extremely excited and honoured. Not much changes for me. We've all got our roles in the team, and a big thing in this Springbok team is about taking ownership in your role,' Kriel said on Friday during the traditional captain's pre-match press conference.
'That in itself kind of sets you to develop as a leader, and whether you've got 100 Test matches or a guy playing in their first games, they are all leaders in their own ways.
'They take ownership of what they need to do in the team, and that over the years has helped me to develop.

'I've been surrounded by really strong leaders like Siya, Eben, Handré, and a lot of other guys.
'I've been very fortunate to watch their example and learn from them. But tomorrow, not much changes, and I'm pretty excited for the challenge.'
Kriel – who attended Maritzburg College – made his Test debut in 2015 against Australia, and has earned 79 caps in total.
He added that he has led his Japanese club a few times over the years, and will remember the lessons from some of the good and bad moments to help him guide the Boks on Saturday.

Kriel played in the 2015, 2019 and 2023 World Cups, where he was the starting No 13 in the 2015 semi-final loss to the All Blacks in London, but had to go home following an injury early in the 2019-winning campaign in Japan.
He was able to fight his way back into the starting side that clinched the 2023 title in France, and hopes to be part of the 'three-peat' in Australia in 2027.
'That's the beauty of rugby – it's not always smooth sailing. There are lots of ups and downs, and you learn a lot about yourself in those tough times,' Kriel said.
'It forces you and allows you to grow as an individual, as a person, and also become a better teammate.
'Those tough times have probably been the times that I've actually learnt to enjoy the most, because you learn a lot about yourself and how special this team is – and how people help you through those tough times.
'It makes the good times and winning World Cups so much more special.
'I'm very grateful for all those times, and hopefully there are a lot more good times in the future.
'I don't think I'm the biggest talker. Obviously with the defence, I've always been quite vocal when it comes to defence, because that has been my pressure point in the team.
'If you look at the team this weekend, we've got guys like Lood, Malcolm, Damian has played so many Test matches next to me.
'He could so easily have led the team, and he will be leading tomorrow. Then you've got Cheslin and Kurt-Lee, who are great leaders in their own right. It just makes it so much easier.'
Meanwhile, Bok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick said on Friday that Kolisi's neck problem was not too serious.
'We always try to give players the best opportunity to be 100 percent for the game. But with Siya, it's just a stiff neck. I don't think there's a need to take a risk,' he said.
'Chances are by the time we have the kickoff, Siya's neck will probably be loose and 100 percent.
'But for this game, whenever we can, we try to build more leaders in the team, and Jesse is our captain. He's always been there as a leader, so it was an easy call for us to make.
'We don't want to push Siya – I don't think it's a major thing: it's just a stiff neck, and we don't want to take a risk.
'But I'm excited to see Jesse's leadership skills. He's always been there vocally, and led by example. So, it's great for him to get an opportunity to lead the team.'

'It was a case of burnout. Thank goodness I am over that. I know the traps — I must not get too involved in refereeing decisions, social media, and try and read everything. 'I was with the Springboks and also a head coach in Super Rugby (with the Lions) — you go from one group to the other, and the stress just builds and builds.

Image: Backpagepix Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is expecting a 'desperate' Wallabies team to fight to the last second of Saturday's Rugby Championship opener at Ellis Park. But the Springboks are equally fired up to perform after what Kolisi describes as indifferent form in their last four matches. 'We have a big game on Saturday. We know what Australia wants to do to us. We have been in their position before,' Kolisi said. 'We would be foolish if we did not understand how desperate they are, how much they want to beat us.' By the same token, the captain stressed that the Boks are disappointed that they haven't fired on all cylinders this year. 'We look at our last four games, and we are disappointed,' he said. 'We were supposed to have an extra week of holiday, but we felt that we had not hit the standards that we set, and so we trained instead. 'We know we have played far better than what we have so far delivered. The big thing for us is that we haven't been physical enough. 'At the Springboks, everything else can go wrong as long as our physicality is at the level we set for ourselves.' The Australians might read these words with dread. And another warning fired off by Kolisi is his team's goal of ruling the world not just at World Cups but in between. That is something that has eluded previous Springbok teams. 'It is very important to us to do well between Cups,' Kolisi said. 'That is why you see so many players getting opportunities because, unfortunately, injuries occur. We need our greater group to be the best it can be. 'Our mindset is to win every single game but also to build squad depth because the two go hand in hand. 'To that end, our training sessions have been much tougher this year. I would say they have been brutal, especially the forward sessions. 'We want to be the best in the world all the time. It has never been our goal just to focus on World Cups, because anything can happen in a World Cup. Also, being No. 1 in the world makes a difference when it comes to the World Cup pools.' On Saturday, Kolisi leads the Boks for the 63rd time as captain, but he says he is not about breaking records.

A history of the Springboks v Wallabies at Ellis Park
The Springboks have a superb record against the Wallabies at Ellis Park, winning 11 games and losing just one at the iconic ground over their history. The Springboks will be up against the Wallabies at fortress Ellis Park on Saturday evening, where the hosts will be looking to extend their impressive record at a ground they have only lost at once against the visitors in their history. The Boks hold a strong 11-1 win-loss ratio against the Aussies at the iconic stadium, and have yet to be beaten there in the professional era, which kicked off in 1995. The first game between the teams at the ground was back in 1933, with the Boks picking up a 12-3 win, followed by triumphs in 1953 (25-3) and 1961 (28-3). Their sole loss against the Wallabies at Ellis Park came in 1963, with the Aussies edging a tight match 11-9, before the Boks got back to winning ways in 1969 (30-11). Since the game turned professional, the Boks and Wallabies have clashed at Ellis Park six further times; these are the matches: Tri Nations 1998: Springboks win 29-15 It was an unblemished Tri Nations for the Boks as they clinched their first title, winning all four of their games. The Ellis Park match was the last of the tournament and proved to be a decider with the Aussies still in with a chance of winning. But two tries, from Adrian Garvey and replacement Bobby Skinstad, and two conversions and five penalties from Percy Montgomery was enough to get the Boks over the line, with all the Wallabies' points coming from the boot of fullback Matt Burke. Tri Nations 2002: Springboks win 33-31 It wasn't a good tournament for the Boks as they finished bottom of the log with just one win from their four matches, and that came in a thriller at Ellis Park in the final game of the tournament, that was decided after the fulltime hooter. Two tries to Breyton Paulse, and one each to Brent Russell and Joe van Niekerk, along with three conversions from Werner Greeff, saw the Boks trailing 26-31 to the Wallabies when the clock went red, only for Greeff to become the hero, hitting a great line to score and convert with the last play of the game to send the fans wild. Mid-year Internationals 2005: Springboks win 33-20 With the All Blacks entertaining the British and Irish Lions, the Boks played five mid-year Tests, thrashing Uruguay 134-3 in East London, while they drew to France 30-all in Durban and beat them 27-13 in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha). They then travelled to Australia where the Wallabies downed them 30-12 in Sydney. Two weeks later the Boks got their revenge, hosting them in Johannesburg where tries to Jean de Villiers, Bryan Habana and Jaque Fourie, and 18 points from the boot of Percy Montgomery gave them a solid win. Tri Nations 2006: Springboks win 24-16 In a chastening tournament the Boks finished as the wooden spoonists, including a record 49-0 defeat against the Wallabies in Brisbane in their competition opener. But they bounced back towards the end, including beating the All Blacks 21-20 in Rustenburg. It was then a tight final match at Ellis Park, with the teams locked 3-all at halftime, before two penalties from Andre Pretorius and a converted try to Fourie du Preez had them 19-16 up going into the final 10 minutes, when Breyton Paulse sealed the win with their second try. Tri Nations 2008: Springboks win 53-8 The Springboks somehow finished bottom of the Tri Nations, despite beating the All Blacks in Dunedin, and picking up a record win over the Wallabies at Ellis Park, while they lost their other matches in the competition. Jongi Nokwe was the star of the show, running in an incredible four tries, while Andries Bekker, Adi Jacobs, Ruan Pienaar and Odwa Ndungane also dotted down. Butch James slotted three conversions and a penalty, and Percy Montgomery one conversion. The 45 point winning margin remains the Boks' biggest over the Aussies. Rugby Championship 2019: Springboks win 35-17 The only game between the two sides at Ellis Park since the competition became the Rugby Championship after Argentina joined, came during a World Cup year. The Springboks won a shortened version that saw each team play each other once. The Boks got off to the perfect start to the competition with a well-deserved bonus point win on the Highveld, as Herschel Jantjies enjoyed a dream debut scoring a double, with Lood de Jager, Sbu Nkosi and Cobus Reinach also dotting down, while Elton Jantjies slotted all five conversions.
