New Delhi, Jun 1 (PTI) Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles will visit India this week as part of a four-nation trip that is aimed at boosting Canberra's security cooperation with South and Southeast Asia.
Besides India, Marles is also scheduled to visit the Maldives, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
'Australia values our relationships with neighbours in the Indo-Pacific. Our deepening cooperation is at the heart of Australia's approach to ensure the Indo-Pacific remains open, inclusive and resilient,' Marles said.
'I look forward to meeting leaders and welcome productive discussions on how we can work together to shape a peaceful, secure, and prosperous region that is respectful of sovereignty,' he said.
Marles will be the first senior Australian minister to visit India after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese retained power for a second term following his Labor party's victory in the parliamentary election.
India and Australia signed the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) in 2022 and are negotiating a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement (CECA). PTI MPB RC

Two sentenced to life imprisonment in murder case in Assam
Last Updated: Kokrajhar, Jun 3 (PTI) A court in Assam's Kokrajhar district on Tuesday sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for killing a man and injuring two others in 2008 following a land dispute. Kokrajhar District and Sessions Judge Nirmali Talukdar sentenced the two accused, Aktar Ali and Abbas Ali, to life imprisonment for murder and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each. In default of payment, they would have to undergo six more months of rigorous imprisonment. The case dates back to October 26, 2008, when the accused, armed with weapons, attempted to plough a piece of land in Kusumbil under the jurisdiction of Gossaigaon police station in Kokrajhar district. Another person and his brothers also claimed that the land belonged to their father. This led to a clash between the two sides resulting in the death of a man identified as Sayed Ali. Jagan alleges police torture of youth in Guntur district, slams public assault
Last Updated: Tenali (Andhra Pradesh), June 3 (PTI) YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday accused the Guntur district police of 'torturing" three youth over three days and threatening them with electric shocks. Reddy visited the family of Chebrolu John Victor, one of the victims who was publicly assaulted by the police on April 25. He alleged the three youth—Victor, Karimullah, and Doma Rakesh—were humiliated by being made to sit on the road and beaten with batons in full public view. A video of the incident, which surfaced on May 26, triggered widespread outrage. It showed policemen kicking and stamping on the victims, sparking sharp criticism over police excesses. Reddy claimed that the youth were targeted for questioning a local constable who allegedly tried to take Victor's phone and motorcycle keys. The YSRCP leader further alleged that a group of policemen picked up Chebrolu John Victor and Karimullah from Mangalagiri on April 25 and beat them while transporting them to Tenali. Both were detained at a police station that night, where they were subjected to further custodial violence. The following day, they were publicly assaulted on a roadside in the Ithanagar area of Tenali, near a police station. The opposition leader also alleged that, after three days of continuous torture, the police planted a knife in Victor's pocket and summoned two local village revenue officers (VROs) to falsely document that Victor was carrying a deadly weapon. Meanwhile, TDP MLA N Anand Babu hit back at Reddy, saying he should be ashamed of defending alleged ganja (marijuana) dealers, drug peddlers, and criminal gangs. 'When YSRCP MLC Anantha Babu murdered a Dalit driver named Subrahmanyam and had his body delivered at the doorstep, Jagan didn't even react," Babu told reporters, recalling a case during the YSRCP regime.
