Sam Altman said AI agents are acting like junior colleagues — and he's betting that AI could soon 'discover new knowledge'

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is betting that AI could soon help "discover new knowledge" and said it is already beginning to act like your junior-level coworkers. "You hear people that talk about their job now is to assign work to a bunch of agents, look at the quality, figure out how it fits together, give feedback, and it sounds a lot like how they work with a team of still relatively junior employees," Altman said of AI agents on Monday during the Snowflake Summit 2025, in a conversation with Snowflake Computing CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy. "I would bet next year that in some limited cases, at least in some small ways, we start to see agents that can help us discover new knowledge, or can figure out solutions to business problems that are kind of very non-trivial," Altman added. The keynote conversation at Snowflake Summit — which explored how organizations can drive immediate impact with the power of AI — comes as new data show that AI is already replacing human workers. Zanele Munyikwa, an economist at Revelio Labs, spoke to Business Insider's Aki Ito about her analysis of online job postings and the impact of AI since ChatGPT's release at the end of 2022. As Ito wrote, "She found that over the past three years, the share of AI-doable tasks in online job postings has declined by 19%." In roles Munyikwa pinpointed as more vulnerable to AI, such as database administrators and IT specialists, the hiring downturn has been as steep as 31%. Over the past quarter, Shopify said that its managers need to explain why a job couldn't be handled by AI before asking for new hires, and Duolingo, the language learning app, said it would replace contract workers with AI. In February, OpenAI launched GPT-4.5, which Altman called "the first model that feels like talking to a thoughtful person." He also described the model as "giant" and "expensive." The rollout is limited to Pro subscribers until the shortage of GPUs is solved. OpenAI also recently launched Codex, a new AI agent aimed at streamlining coding tasks for developers by writing code, fixing bugs, and running tests. Altman said it was already in use by OpenAI's own engineers. Unlike traditional chatbots, the multitasking AI agent can also interact with external software to complete tasks like making a dinner reservation.

Console raises $6.2M from Thrive to free IT teams from mundane tasks with AI

If you've ever been locked out of your work computer, you know the urgent need to reach IT support. Unfortunately, help desk staff are often busy assisting others, which can mean a significant delay before you regain access. Andrei Serban realized the critical importance of IT's manual work when he was a product lead on Rippling's apps and integrations team. Serban, who joined Rippling after it acquired his coding security startup Fuzzbuzz in 2023, saw an opportunity to automate many of the help desk's basic tasks with AI, from resetting passwords, to granting access to apps like Figma and Miro, to routine troubleshooting. Serban couldn't wait to get started on his vision. He left Rippling last year to found Console, a startup on a mission to help IT teams reduce mundane, repetitive tasks, thereby freeing up time for help desk professionals to work on more strategic and sophisticated projects. While trying to automate help desk functions isn't new, Console differentiates itself from existing competitors — including Moveworks, which was acquired by ServiceNow in March for $2.85 billion — by forgoing long, complex installation processes. Thanks to its easy integration with Slack, Console's AI assistant can be made available to everyone in the company in just a few weeks. "We're able to get there so fast because we don't require you to replace your help desk," he said. Console sees itself as an AI co-worker that up-levels existing help desk professionals. Serban even suggested that as companies digitize more of their operations, the IT function will become increasingly vital. Employees message Console on Slack and the startup's AI agent quickly responds to requests because it knows everything about the user, from their specific laptop model to the applications they have permission to use. Console's AI can resolve over 50% of the tasks on its own, and it will loop in someone from IT for more complex issues, Serban said. The fast install time attracted customers, including Scale AI, Flock Safety, and Calendly. These customer wins have led Console to secure $6.2 million in seed funding from Thrive Capital. Vince Hankes, a partner at Thrive, said that the firm, which has backed many of the leading AI companies, including OpenAI, Cursor, and ElevenLabs, has had a thesis about artificial intelligence's potential to assist with IT tasks since ChatGPT was first released in the fall of 2022. While Hankes acknowledged that Console's fast integration might make it seem easily replaceable, he believes its AI technology will improve so quickly with user adoption that it will become an indispensable, deeply integrated system essential to everyone at the customer's company. Console's goal is to eventually start supporting other functions, including answering employee requests about HR, finance, and legal. "We want Console to be an employee's first call for help," Serban said. This article originally appeared on TechCrunch at Sign in to access your portfolio

WhatsApp looks set to roll out a long-awaited feature

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to create a username for their account, eliminating the need to show their phone number when connecting with other users. The feature, first reported by WABetaInfo (via Tecnoblog), was spotted in the code of a recent iOS update released via the TestFlight beta Program. WABetaInfo noted that the feature is currently in development and is not yet available for beta testing. Recommended Videos Being able to create a username instead of giving your phone number is both a security measure and a personalization feature, enabling users to express their identity uniquely while at the same time maintaining privacy. According to WABetaInfo's findings, WhatsApp will lay out some rules around how you'll be able to select a username, in a bid to ensure consistency and security. For example, to prevent other users from thinking they're communicating with an official website, you won't be able to create a name that starts with 'www'. Nor will you be able to end a name with a domain like '.com'. For a cleaner look, WhatsApp account names will have to be created in lower case letters, with numbers, periods, and underscores also allowed. Additionally, your WhatsApp username will have to contain at least 3 characters and cannot exceed 30. 'Once a username that meets all the above criteria is chosen by the user, a confirmation screen will appear,' WABetaInfo said in its report. 'This screen includes a celebratory animation with confetti, and it will confirm that the username has been successfully linked to the user's account. From that moment on, people who do not have the user's phone number will see the username instead, both when initiating a new conversation and within group chats.' To reiterate, the feature is under development and is likely to come as part of a future update to WhatsApp, hopefully before too long. The new feature would bring WhatsApp in line with other messaging platforms like Signal and Telegram, which both require phone numbers to register but allow users to connect via a username rather than the account's phone number. WhatsApp hit the headlines again recently with the long-awaited launch of an iPad version of its messaging service. As you'd expect, WhatsApp for iPad offers multi-tasking features such as Split View, Slide Over, and Stage Manager, bringing a more productive, as well as pleasant, user experience.
