For some Californians, high transportation costs put owning a car out of reach
Los Angeles — Getting to work is work for Franchescoli Andrade, who rides his bike, hops on a train and then takes a bus every day.
His 20-mile journey from South Los Angeles to the San Fernando Valley takes about 90 minutes each way.
"Half an hour just to get to downtown, to get to the train station, then another half-an-hour just to get from the train station to get here, and then the bus will take me straight to my job," Andrade told CBS News. "I would do this journey every day just to get my family through."
His journey was easier when he had a car. But following a crash, fixing it just cost too much for Andrade, who is the sole provider for his family.
"It's almost like a struggle, every paycheck," Andrade said.
To cut down on daycare costs, his wife stays at home with their young son. "It's heart wrenching, you know," Andrade said. "Because it makes me feel like I'm not enough, you know, as a human. Like, I'm not really doing much."
Andrade's family's struggles mirror that of millions in California. According to a study released earlier this year from the nonprofit United Way, 35% of California households — or about 3.8 million households — do not make enough to afford basic costs of living, such as rent, groceries and gas.
United Way CEO Pete Manzo says the study is just a snapshot of a national problem.
"It's a crisis we've been living with," Manzo told CBS News. "It's like we're running a high fever. We have too many households where people are working hard and they can't earn a decent standard of living."
One of the biggest challenges is access to transportation. AAA says the cost of owning a new car — including monthly payments, insurance, maintenance and fuel — runs more than $12,000 per year for the average American household.
"You're basically saying to a family, it's going to be a $1,000 a month or more to get to and from work, to get to and from school," Manzo said. "It's not cheap." The costs may not be as high in some other states as in California. But nationwide, taking into account inflation, the financial burden of transportation is steadily rising, along with housing and childcare, United Way analysis has found.
Manzo says that advising families in California to move somewhere more affordable isn't necessarily a practical solution.
"For one family, that might be a decent idea," Manzo said. "But it's pretty disruptive to just pick up and leave all your other family relationships and all your community ties to move somewhere to make it cheaper...Expecting them all to move somewhere cheaper just doesn't make sense."
For now, Andrade is saving up to afford a car for his family. "They tell me, you know, don't give up, you got this."

The U.S. added a thousand new millionaires a day in 2024: report
The United States is home to the most millionaires of any country, with a tally of 23.8 million in 2024, according to a new report by UBS. The Swiss bank estimated the U.S. minted some 379,000 new millionaires last year, or more than a thousand each day, for an increase of 1.5%. Mainland China came in second at 6.3 million, up 2.3%, with 141,000 new millionaires. By percentage, Turkey's millionaire population increased the most with an 8.4% bump to 87,000. America extended its lead thanks to a banner year for Wall Street as well as a stable U.S. dollar. The first six months of 2025, however, have been rocky. President Donald Trump's trade war and recession fears have roiled markets and weighed on the dollar, which is down about 9% this year. UBS economist James Mazeau told CNBC it's too early to say whether U.S. household wealth will grow at a slower rate this year. A weaker dollar spurs wealth growth in countries with non-dollar currencies rather than stalling it in the U.S., according to Mazeau. But he also said American real estate has been resilient and that U.S. equities could end the year slightly higher than where they are now. "This year could be lower than last year, but it doesn't mean we'll have a reversal in fortune and see negative wealth creation," he said. "I don't think the engines of growth are dead in the United States — far from it." While nearly 40% of the world's millionaires are based in the U.S., Luxembourg and Switzerland have higher concentrations of wealth. In both countries, more than one in seven adults are worth at least $1 million, according to UBS. The worldwide millionaire population rose by more than 684,000 to some 60 million, due in large part to increasing real estate values. However, this growth was disparate geographically, with some countries losing share. Japan, for instance, lost 33,000 millionaires with its shrinking population. The billionaire count increased modestly to 2,891, but Mazeau noted that there was high turnover. Billionaires lost wealth in 15 of 56 markets in UBS's sample, with the sharpest declines in the Netherlands and Uruguay. Singapore, Qatar, Greece and Poland recorded the highest gains. "There can be great reversals of fortune even within that segment," he said. Even among the world's richest people, the wealth is concentrated toward the top. UBS estimates some 60 million individuals hold $226.47 trillion combined, nearly half of the world's global wealth. Within that group are 2,860 billionaires who represent $15.7 trillion in assets. And at the very top, 15 centibillionaires, less than 1% of the group, boast a combined net worth of $2.4 trillion. "We do see that there is wealth concentration or, I would say, wealth inequality, even amongst billionaires," Mazeau said. He attributed most of the concentration to the outperformance of the tech sector and the rise of "mega tech entrepreneurs." There is not much data on individuals in the $50 million to $1 billion range, which distorts the picture, according to Mazeau. He also said the wealth growth among middle and lower wealth brackets is underappreciated. For instance, the number of individuals with $1 million to $5 million, whom UBS dubs "everyday millionaires," has more than quadrupled since 2000 to about 52 million. "They have more wealth collectively than all the billionaires in the world," he said. "It is often overlooked how much wealth is rising and is going towards the middle of the pack."

I'm a family-owned American manufacturer. Being made in the US hasn't been easy but it's paying off.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with William Gagnon, executive vice president and COO of Excel Dryer, a hand-dryer manufacturer based in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Their main product is the XLERATOR Hand Dryer. This story has been edited for length and clarity. We are a family-owned and operated company. I own it with my father, Dennis, who always wanted to own his own manufacturing company and make quality products that were American-made, dependable, and that people like to use. That was his criteria. The apple didn't fall far from the tree. We've worked together over the years to make sure that it stayed that way. It's certainly been difficult, with the easy route being to simply source overseas and get things cheap from China and keep costs down and make more margin. But that wasn't who we were. We always tried to find a better way to do things — to be more efficient, reduce material and labor costs, and have quality employees making a living wage — and still be able to produce an American-made product that was high quality at an affordable price. We are Made-in-USA certified, which requires a minimum of 84% of materials sourced domestically, but we have far surpassed that. We're really in the upper 90% of being sourced in the US, and almost 50% of our materials are sourced in Massachusetts from very local vendors. For a while, we couldn't find a motor manufacturer domestically that could compete with motors from China in performance, price, size, and other things. But we have since found a domestic partner and shifted all of our motor manufacturing to be with a partner out of Tennessee. It has not been easy, and it took a consistent, dedicated effort to always be looking and always be trying to find new vendors as close as possible. Being made in America differentiates us from other hand dryers and certainly makes a difference to our customers and the buyers. The recent tariffs have also been good for business. We've been able to control our supply lines and our materials and their costs because they're all domestic. With everyone living in uncertain times and not knowing really where the materials they were buying from people were coming from, we've known, and that has put us in a very competitive position. One of our top distributors put out an e-blast saying that several of our top competitors were raising their prices, but our name was not on that list. We asked them to put out that same e-blast to say that XL Dryer is American-made and will not be having a price increase because we're tariff resilient and domestically sourced. We have absolutely gotten new customers as a result of this. We are also a global company. We just put almost 600 hand dryers into the new Istanbul airport. But to get our American-made product into Turkey, there are substantial added costs, such as tariffs and value-added tax. It's a barrier to entry there and makes our product more expensive and less competitive. If those costs can come down through trade negotiations, it's going to open up more international markets for us. Uncertainty is never good, especially for business, so that the sooner things can be negotiated and put into place, the better it's going to be for all involved. We're a small manufacturer of a niche product, and everyone's story is different. But for us, in the way we've been doing business and doing it harder than most and making it a part of who we are — and being proud to be American-made in Massachusetts, which is where America was born — it is an exciting time for us. Being American-made is just who we are. It is in our DNA. But I feel it's as if we almost were looking into the future a little bit to be ready for this moment, and it's maybe a positive for all the hard work over the years that we had to put in to keep it this way. It's nice for it to be paying off.

The Trump Organization is selling a cellphone. Here are all the problems with it
This week, President Donald Trump has been overseeing ramped-up ICE raids in major cities and navigating conflict in the Middle East. His family's business is also trying to sell you a cellphone. The Trump Organization announced on Monday the launch of a smartphone that doesn't exist and a mediocre phone plan to go with it. 'Our MADE IN THE USA 'T1™ Phone' is available for pre-order now,' reads the website for Trump Mobile, run by a new business called T1 Mobile LLC that's licensing the Trump family name. 'The 'T1™ Phone' will be available in September 2025.' The '47 Plan' will be available for $47.45 a month – a symbolic nod to him being the 45th and 47th president. Tech and gadget experts say this specific phone, at this specific price point, manufactured entirely on American soil, cannot possibly exist by September of this year. By entering the cellphone market, the Trump Organization would be competing directly with American-based companies like Apple, and operating in an industry that's heavily regulated by the federal government. Ethics watchdogs say this, along with the cryptocurrency, watches, shoes, Bibles and other heavily branded products, are examples of the Trump family financially benefiting from the patriarch's role as president, profiting off supporters and potentially foreign governments, and stomping on the traditional norms and guardrails of the presidency in a way that's even more brazen than in his first term. 'It really seems to be just a blatant conflict of interest at every turn,' said Meghan Faulkner, the communications director for Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington. A 'bad and impossible' phone – and the plan's not much better In a press release on the president's eldest sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump touted 5G service through three existing major carriers, roadside assistance through Drive America and telehealth services from an unnamed provider — plus free long-distance calling, which has been widely available from all cell service providers for the past 20 years. The service also promises customer service based in America where customers can speak to 'a real person.' 'Hard-working Americans deserve a wireless service that's affordable, reflects their values, and delivers reliable quality they can count on,' reads a quote from Eric Trump. But the plan isn't particularly affordable when you look at comparable ones on the market: Mint Mobile is $30 a month, and Verizon's Visible is only $25 a month. The plan doesn't require you to buy a new phone to use it. But it is selling one: The T1 Phone 8002 (gold version). The computer-edited image on the preorder page does not depict a real phone that exists right now. And that's not the only confusing thing, according to David Pierce, editor-at-large for The Verge, who wrote that it looks 'both bad and impossible.' There's been a lot of talk this year about making smartphones in the United States. Trump threatened a 25% tariff specifically on smartphone companies unless they agreed to move manufacturing stateside. The reason Apple and other companies don't immediately shift to making smartphones here is pretty simple: They can't. We don't have the factories, we don't have the parts pipeline established, and we don't have the workforce with the skills needed to make a highly sophisticated product like an iPhone. It's not impossible to build factories and upskill a workforce. But it would take years to get it all set up, and would make phones cost a lot more. Experts told CNBC the price of an iPhone 16 Pro — currently available on Apple's website starting at $999 — made in America would wind up somewhere in the ballpark of $1,500 to $3,500. And CEOs are unlikely to make that kind of major investment when Trump keeps waffling on tariffs. So how is the Trump Organization going to set that up in three months and sell their phone for $500? Also pretty simple, Pierce said: They aren't. 'The idea that you're going to do it between now and September for $500 is just lunacy,' he said. What's most likely to happen, he said, is they're going to rebadge an existing phone — take a cheaper model already on the market and rebrand it. A few different tech reporters have tried to figure out which candidate is most likely, based on the specifications listed on the website. A frontrunner appears to be the T-Mobile Revvl 7 5G, which you can buy from Amazon right now for $169. Is Trump Mobile a conflict of interest for the president? Technically speaking, President Trump no longer runs the Trump Organization. When he first became president, he bucked historic precedent by refusing to fully divest from his company by selling his assets or placing them in a blind trust, like Jimmy Carter did with his family peanut farm. Instead, he put the Trump Organization in a revocable trust controlled by his oldest sons. Throughout Trump's political career, the Trump Organization has leveraged the president's name, slogan and office to sell all sorts of things. In his first term, critics and political opponents raised concerns about how foreign governments, corporate interests and bad actors could access and enrich the president via his golf courses, hotels and Mar-A-Lago clubs. What we've seen so far in his second term is an acceleration of that trend. Today, a foreign government that wouldn't legally be allowed to donate $5 to the Trump campaign can spend an unlimited amount of money buying his cryptocurrency, said Eric Petry, counsel for elections and government programs at the Brennan Center. 'There were unprecedented conflicts of interest in the first Trump term, but everything we're seeing now is well beyond what we saw then,' he said. 'The guardrails are down and we're really seeing an administration unrestrained from norms and tradition.' Foreign governments probably aren't too interested in a phone plan. This seems to be more of an appeal to his base, who seem hungry to spend money on Trump-branded products despite their history of spotty quality. This phone plan isn't the best or most affordable, this phone isn't the best deal for the money. From a personal finance perspective, there's no reason to engage with Trump Mobile. But it's not about that. 'Trump is president and has fans who will buy whatever has his name on it, and they're going to take advantage of that in every way they possibly can,' Pierce said. Presidential campaigns selling merch is nothing new. Remember the Jeb Bush guacamole bowl? But these aren't campaign donations, which are tightly regulated with transparency requirements. These sales represent profits for Trump's company and family members. So that's one potential conflict of interest. Though not the only one: Again, this plan and phone would compete with both American and foreign companies. The telecom industry is regulated by the federal government, and Trump has never been shy about asking for special treatment from officials he appointed. Petry brought up a couple hypothetical scenarios: Could new federal regulations tip the industry's scales in favor of Trump Mobile? Will every federal employee be required to carry a government-purchased T1 Phone 8002 (gold version)? There aren't a ton of checks on the president's ability to profit from his office and engage in self-dealing. That's because every other president wanted to observe those norms without them having to be enforced, said Faulkner. Congress has the ability to conduct oversight on these things and hold hearings on emoluments and conflicts of interest – a responsibility members from the president's party, which currently controls both houses, have shown no interest in upholding. So the Trump Organization and affiliated companies can continue their efforts to sell you a cellphone (and a watch, and a pair of shoes, and more or less whatever else they want). From a consumer standpoint, you're probably better off hanging on to your current model.
