Aston Martin first to launch Apple's next-gen ‘CarPlay Ultra' software
Listen to article
Aston Martin has become the first carmaker to integrate Apple's next-generation CarPlay Ultra system, marking a major step forward in in-car infotainment technology.
Announced on Thursday, the updated system will roll out to all new Aston Martin models sold in the US and Canada, including the DB12, Vanquish, Vantage, and the latest DBX SUV — provided they feature the brand's post-2023 infotainment platform.
Unlike previous versions, CarPlay Ultra takes full control of both the infotainment display and digital dashboard, offering granular customisation of instrument clusters, themes, and wallpapers.
This includes speedometer, tachometer, and full-screen navigation layouts, all styled to match Aston Martin's distinctive design language.
Apple's updated CarPlay also enables users to control climate, media, and vehicle settings using touch or Siri voice commands.
Some essential functions, such as reverse camera feeds, will remain independent of the CarPlay interface.
CarPlay Ultra requires an iPhone 12 or newer running iOS 18.5.4 or later.
Aston Martin confirmed that eligible existing models will receive the upgrade via a dealer-installed software update in the coming weeks.
The move places Apple in direct competition with Google's Android Auto, which already offers deep system integration in several car brands.
Apple noted that Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis are also planning to support CarPlay Ultra soon.
This long-awaited launch follows Apple's original 2022 promise of a more immersive CarPlay experience, although several brands listed then — including Mercedes-Benz — have since opted out of implementing the new platform.

Apple gives Tata India iPhone repair business as partnership expands
BENGALURU: Apple has brought in Tata Group to handle repairs for iPhones and MacBook devices in its fast-growing Indian market, signalling the Indian conglomerate's deepening role in the U.S. tech giant's supply chain, two people familiar with the matter said. As Apple looks beyond China for manufacturing, Tata has fast emerged as its key supplier and already assembles iPhones for local and foreign markets at three facilities in south India, with one of them also making some iPhone components. In its latest partnership expansion, Tata is taking over the mandate from an Indian unit of Taiwan's Wistron, ICT Service Management Solutions, and will carry out such after-sales repairs from its Karnataka iPhone assembly campus, both sources said. The market for repairs is only going to boom in India, the world's second-biggest smartphone market, as iPhone sales skyrocket. Counterpoint Research estimates around 11 million iPhones were sold in India last year, giving Apple a 7% market share, compared to just 1% in 2020. Apple airlifts 600 tons of iPhones from India 'to beat' Trump tariffs, sources say The latest contract award signals Apple's growing confidence on Tata as it hopes to win more business from the world's most valuable smartphone company. 'Tata's deepening partnership with Apple could also pave the groundwork for Apple directly selling refurbished devices in India, like how it does in the United States currently,' said Prabhu Ram, a vice president at Cybermedia Research. The takeover from ICT by Tata is currently ongoing, both sources said, who declined to be named as they were not authorized to speak on the matter. Apple and Wistron did not respond to requests for comment, while a spokesperson for Tata declined to comment. While Apple's official service centres across India can do basic repairs, they would now ship phones and laptops to Tata's facility for more complex issues. Wistron's ICT however will continue to service other clients excluding Apple, one of the sources said. Amid an impending threat of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on China, India is also emerging as a favoured destination for iPhone exports. Apple CEO Tim Cook has said the bulk of iPhones sold in the United States during June quarter will be made at factories in India.

iPhone 17 Air Tipped To Be First Apple Phone Without USB-C
Listen to article Apple is reportedly poised to take a bold step into a wireless future, with the upcoming iPhone 17 Air expected to ditch the USB-C port entirely, ending cable charging for good. The move would make the iPhone 17 Air Apple's first fully portless smartphone, relying entirely on Qi2-certified MagSafe wireless charging and cloud-based data syncing. According to various media reports that cite industry insiders, Apple sees this as the beginning of a broader transition to cable-free mobile devices. Read more: Leaked images suggest iPhone 17 features, specs ahead of launch While previous reports suggested Apple had delayed the shift due to concerns about European Union regulations, the European Commission has now clarified that such a portless phone is fully legal under current law. 'If a phone does not offer wired charging, then it is not required to have a USB-C port,' said Commission spokesperson Federica Miccoli. The clarification clears a key regulatory hurdle, paving the way for Apple to lead a new generation of wireless-only devices. Apple was previously required to switch from its proprietary Lightning port to USB-C to comply with the EU's Common Charger Directive. In the past, the European Union mandated the adoption of USB-C ports for all mobile devices to reduce electronic waste and streamline the consumer experience. But the law applies only when a physical charging port is present. Read: Apple iPhone 17 Air: What we know so far By removing the USB-C connector entirely, Apple effectively opts out of the mandate, provided the wireless charging experience is as seamless and efficient as a traditional cabled connection. Apple's Qi2-compliant MagSafe technology, now standardised and adopted by other manufacturers, appears to satisfy those expectations. The company has already removed SIM card slots in some models and is expected to eliminate more physical components to further reduce thickness and improve design. Also read: Leaked designs for Apple's foldable iPhone 17: What to expect and how much will It cost? The iPhone 17 Air is expected to be the slimmest iPhone ever made and will debut in September. Analysts say it could set the tone for future iPhones – and the broader smartphone industry – by initiating the complete phasing out of physical charging ports.

WhatsApp cuts off support for older iPhones and Androids: Find out full list
WhatsApp has officially discontinued support for several older Apple and Android smartphones, effective 1 June 2025. The decision is part of the messaging app's routine update cycle and is expected to push users with ageing devices towards modern alternatives. The Meta-owned platform will now only function on iPhones running iOS 15.1 and above and Android phones using Android 5.0 and newer. The original cut-off date, scheduled for 5 May, was extended by Apple to allow users additional time to transition. Affected devices include: iPhone 5s iPhone 6 Galaxy S III HTC One X Sony Xperia Z Though some reports also flagged the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and the first-generation iPhone SE, these models currently operate on iOS 15.8.4 and will likely remain supported for at least another year. In a statement posted on its Help Center, WhatsApp explained the rationale behind the change: 'Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.' While the update will not affect users of new iPhone or Android models, it underscores a wider industry trend of phasing out support for outdated hardware. Experts say the shift is not just about performance—it also helps improve user security by consolidating updates across fewer devices. The move comes as WhatsApp continues to expand its platform with updates, including multi-device functionality and a long-awaited iPad app. Users still relying on older devices are now being urged to consider upgrading.
