Stillman Valley's postseason run ended by defending 2A champion Peoria Notre Dame
MANLIUS, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Stillman Valley didn't have an easy road trying to get to the IHSA Girls' 2A State Tournament. First, they had to get by Byron for a sectional championship. Then Monday night they had to get by defending 2A state champion Peoria Notre Dame at the Bureau Valley Super-Sectional. That test they couldn't quite overcome.Peoria Notre Dame jumped out to a 10-0 lead and the Lady Irish never trailed. They shot the lights out from behind the arc. Stillman Valley got as close at eight points in the fourth quarter before falling 67-56.Senior All-State guard Taylor Davidson had a magnificent final game for the Cardinals. She scored 31 points.That was countered by Peoria Notre Dame's Julia Mingus with 25 points and Lexi Baer with 21 points.Stillman Valley's final record is 32-2. Rockford IceHogs MVP Cavan Fitzgerald to return for 2025-26 season
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The IceHogs already have begun building their roster for next season with one very important piece. Monday, they announced they have signed defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald to a two-year AHL checked a lot of boxes last season. He was named the team's MVP and the team's 'Hardest Hitter.' He also was an alternate captain. He led all IceHogs defensemen in scoring with 22 points on eight goals and 14 assists in 63 regular season season was Fitzgerald's first in Rockford. He had previous AHL stops with the Chicago Wolves for four seasons where he was part of a Calder Cup Championship team in 2022, and he spent two seasons with the San Jose Barracuda and one with the Charlotte Checkers. 3 hours? How about 25 minutes. Meet Freddy, the robot painting Byron's athletic fields
BYRON, Ill. (WTVO) — Long before a touchdown pass or a pitcher's perfect curveball, the athletic fields at the Joe Parks Athletic Complex must be ready to go. Athletic director Jeff Milburn said he had a high-tech helper for the last two years: Freddy, the turf tank, a line-marking, number-painting automated robot. 'For keeping these grounds up. We got a lot of land here in Byron, a lot of ball fields and a lot of grass area,' Milburn said. 'Basically, when our guys let this thing go, they set it up and let it go paint it the fields and they can be doing something else while it's painting the fields.' The turf tank, named after a retired custodian, is about the size of a medium-sized suitcase, and is satellite guided by the global positioning system (GPS). 'It is going to cut down labor and most importantly, time,' said grounds manager Nick Sapoznik. The turf tank can paint the lines on a soccer field in about 25 minutes, much faster than the 3 hours it would take a 3 person human team. Milburn says the machine has been a game changer, and has been in use now for two full seasons. However, it's not inexpensive, but Milburn said it is worth every penny. 'It's about $10,000 a year take keep the license. It does more than just our fields. It does the logos and that sort of thing, too,' he said. Dakota loses hard-fought state semifinal game to LeRoy in extra innings
PEORIA, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Dakota's Class 1A state semifinal game Friday against LeRoy was literally a game of inches. A tenth inning ground ball by LeRoy's Emil Mennega glanced off the glove of Dakota's diving shortstop Finley Banks. The ball caromed into short centerfield allowing LeRoy to score the game-winning run and take the game two starting pitchers were superb. Dakota sophomore AJ Howarth pitched 9.2 innings allowing only six hits and two runs. Only one run was earned. She struck out nine sophomore Jacey Hagerman pitched ten innings She allowed eight hits and one run for the win to improve her record to scored its only run in the top of the second inning when Natalie Bartha sent a fly ball to deep right field for a triple that drove in Hailey Kerchner. Dakota led 1-0 until LeRoy answered in the fifth inning on a pop fly that dropped into short centerfield. An ill-advised throw to third base to try to get a LeRoy base runner was late and wild. It got away allowing the LeRoy runner to score and tie the record is now 25-6. The Indians have one more game to play in Peoria.
