Syme's silverlining underlines the value of patience
Or, at least, you're used to hearing the band's name muttered on the golf course as auld Cammy hoiks one off the toe of his 5-iron and gasps, 'that's only going in one bloody direction', as it veers wildly into the impenetrable shrubbery. Again.
The reason I bring Horan into this week's meander is that his management company, Modest Golf, looks after the affairs of Connor Syme, who became the latest Scot to win on the DP World Tour at the KLM Open in Amsterdam.
Horan, as you can imagine, has quite the following on social media. On the platform X, the site that flabbergasting madcaps, Donald Trump and Elon Musk, have clashed handbags on recently, Horan has over 39 million disciples. Tiger Woods has a paltry 6.4 million in comparison.
Given that he's handy with the stick and ba', Horan posts a lot about golf. Back when Syme won his maiden professional title on the second-tier Challenge Tour in Turkey in 2019, Horan stuck up a message of hearty congratulations above a picture of the Fifer.
Underneath flowed a torrent of gushing responses from dreamy pop fans saying things like, 'I love you', 'you are amazing' and 'will you marry me?'. Funnily enough, it was a bit like the comments of the readers under the Tuesday column on The Herald's website.
This tsunami of adoration, of course, was largely directed at Horan himself and not for Syme's Turkish triumph although, amid the giddy worship by teenyboppers, was the odd response saying, 'ever since he won the Northeast District Open Amateur in 2013, I've followed Connor's career keenly.'
Six years on from his breakthrough as a professional, Syme now has the KLM Open trophy plonked on his mantelpiece.
As he gazed at the names engraved into the clump of silverware that was presented to him on Sunday, the 29-year-old was understandably cock-a-hoop to have his own name chiselled into a decorated roll of honour.
Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Jose Maria Olazabal, Colin Montgomerie, Payne Stewart, Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke, Sergio Garcia?
Syme certainly won't tire of giving this spoil of golfing war a regular polish with some Silvo and a lint free cloth. This win was the 150th by a Scottish golfer on the European circuit. A nice little milestone.
It's a case of welcome to the club as far as Syme is concerned. Over the past few years, he's watched old amateur sparring partners like Robert MacIntyre, Grant Forrest and Ewen Ferguson win on the DP World Tour.
In that time, he knocked on the door more times than an Avon lady but couldn't quite get over the threshold. Since 2020, Syme has had three second place finishes, four thirds and 18 other top-10s on the main tour.
Eager observers would often say, 'his time will come', but there are never any guarantees of that in this game. And you can hing on a heck of a long time too.
Oliver Wilson, the former Ryder Cup player, had nine seconds before he got to savour his first tour victory at the 228th attempt.
Syme's fellow Scot, David Drysdale, meanwhile, played 576 events on the DP World Tour and never got over the winning line despite a number of close shaves which featured a quartet of runners-up finishes. For many, that time never comes.
Patience and perseverance remain great attributes in this pursuit and Syme continues to display those in spades.
The former Walker Cup player, who lost narrowly to a certain Scottie Scheffler in the final day singles as GB&I suffered a grisly thumping in the 2017 transatlantic tussle, made the switch into the paid ranks that season and marked his debut by finishing 12th in the tour's Portugal Masters on an invitation.
At that time, there was a dearth of young Scottish talent on the circuit. In this relatively barren land, it was hardly surprising that Syme's sturdy showing in Portugal was greeted with the kind of triumphant reaction that could've been accompanied by the 20th Century Fox fanfare.
He breezed through the qualifying school at the end of that campaign to fast-track himself to the DP World Tour, but he just failed to hold on to his card.
His stint on the Challenge Tour – now the HotelPlanner Tour – in 2019 not only gave him a first pro victory in Turkey, it also equipped him with a lot of the various golfing tools that were, perhaps, missing in that rookie campaign when he'd just made a big leap from amateur golf to the rigours of the main tour.
The second-tier remains an uncompromising coalface and its no frills cut-and-thrust certainly provides an eye-opening, at times eye-watering, yet wonderfully robust apprenticeship. Earn your stripes there and you've made it the hard way.
Syme knows that. 'The Challenge Tour was essential to my development,' he said in a chinwag with this correspondent a couple of years ago.
'I won my first event of the season on it but still just held on to one of the promotion places. It was a hard year, but it set me up for tour life again.'
It certainly did. After this latest tartan-tinged tour triumph, let's hope Syme's career trajectory continues in, well, one direction.

Vaclav Cerny Rangers transfer hope dashed further as Trabzonspor outline plan to meet Czech's demands
Cerny is in demand this summer following his eye-catching loan spell at Ibrox Rangers' already slim chances of signing loan star Vaclav Cerny have suffered another blow after reports emerged that transfer rivals Trabzonspor are clearing the path to make a move for the Czech star. Turkish outfit Trabzonspor want to land the 27-year-old. but could face competition from league rivals Besiktas and several clubs in Spain. We also revealed how Cerny's next transfer could see him bank a lucrative wage packet of up to €3.5million (£2.9million) a year off the back of his impressive season at Ibrox where he registered 18 goals and nine assists in 52 matches in all competitions. And according to reports in Turkey, Trabzonspor could cash in one one of their other stars to free up more wages for Cerny's potential arrival. Taka Gazete claim that the Trabzon-based side are hoping to sell attacking midfielder Oleksandr Zubkov for around €11million (£9.3million) despite only signing him back in February. Ukraine international Zubkov was purchased for a fee in the region of €6million (£5million) and caught the eye with eight goals and four assists in 20 games for Trabzonspor. But the report states that they will be willing to cash in on the 28-year-old this summer, making a tidy profit in the process. In turn, that cash could then allow manager Fatih Tekke to push the boat out to try and bring Cerny to north-east Turkey. Rangers might miss out on Cerny but sporting director Kevin Thelwell is ramping up the Ibrox transfer drive to give new boss Russell Martin some much needed reinforcements ahead of the new season. Record Sport told last week that talks over potential deals for Leicester City defender Conor Coady and Maccabi Tel Aviv frontman Dor Turgeman are both in the offing. Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises vowed to pour £20million into the transfer kitty this summer and a former Manchester United insider is now calling on Gers to use those funds to seal a sensational swoop for Christian Eriksen. The Denmark hero will leave Old Trafford at the end of his contract next month and ex Red Devils transfer chief Mick Brown reckons the 33-year-old might put his lofty expectations aside to make the move north of the border. He told Football Insider: "Rangers have to be clever in the transfer market. "They have to assess where they can get players who will lift the quality in the squad and help to close the gap to Celtic, but won't cost too much money. "From what I hear, they will look to explore the free agent market because there's some quality there. They're considering whether to take a chance on somebody like Christian Eriksen. "He's into his 30s now, he's not going to get box to box, but he can pass and manipulate the ball in ways that their current crop of players can't do. "After leaving Man United, he'll be looking for a new club and Rangers is an interesting opportunity. "He could become an orchestrator in the middle of the park, if they can get runners around him and let him focus on what he can do in possession. "On the other side of it, they have to consider he'll probably be on high wages and might not have the legs any more if that's what they want. But it's move they're looking at and one they might decide is worth the risk and worth the gamble.

Leroy Sane's thoughts on Arsenal move emerge amid Bayern Munich contract dispute
Arsenal are among those linked with Leroy Sane, who is keen on a move to north London with his Bayern Munich contract winding down as talks fail to lead to an extension Leroy Sane is 'very interested' in moving to Arsenal as the Bayern Munich star prepares to become a free agent this summer with his contract saga still rumbling on. The German has been at the Allianz Arena ever since he left Manchester City for just over £50million back in 2020. He's remained a regular but has been unable to iron his out his future in Bavaria which could leave him on the lookout for a new club. Arsenal are among those linked with the winger, who was a big hit during his time in the Premier League. He won several titles and, on a personal level, was named the PFA Young Player of the Year back in 2018. Throughout his time in Manchester Mikel Arteta was Pep Guardiola's No 2 and worked closely with the German. A reunion could now be on the cards as Arsenal look to bolster their forward line with a winger on their radar over the coming months. Sane is also aware of interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, who are both ready to make lucrative offers to tempt him to Istanbul. German outlet Bild claim that Sane is yet to make a final decision on his future despite the fact he is set to become a free agent on July 1. But a move to London is 'appealing' to him and his wife Candice, which could put the Gunners in pole position to sign him. Sane's other options include a move to Saudi Arabia or Serie A champions Napoli but it is understood those are not overly tempting for the player. Bayern bosses are keen to keep hold of their player and have already offered him a new three-year contract, but on reduced terms. Sane rejected the offer as he is unwilling to take a pay-cut which has seen rival clubs circle. Sane has scored over 60 times throughout his time on Bayern's books - hitting double figures every season - and could add another dynamic with pace one of his great assets. He previously scored against Arsenal in his City days. Arsenal's priority this summer is on adding a new No 9 and they've made Benjamin Sesko their preferred target. They want to sign the Slovenian, who has continued his progression at RB Leipzig with the German club often selling their top talent for the right fee.
