VENTNOR claimed their second Southern Premier League Division One victory of the season in extraordinary fashion at Old Tauntonians and Romsey on Saturday.
The home side batted first, but were unceremoniously demolished by the Ventnor pace duo of Chris Russell and George Watts.
Working in tandem, the pair produced inspired spells to rout the hosts for just 41 in just 9.5 overs and 50 minutes.
Russell, the former Worcestershire bowler, took 6-15 while Watts claimed 4-18 as the Sports Centre team narrowly avoided an unwanted record.

Continuing the theme of the game, Ventnor lost five wickets in pursuit of the meagre target, but with Dineth Thimodya hitting 30 and Josh Carpenter 12 not out, a 20-point victory was secured with the match done and dusted inside 22 overs.
Ryde continued their flying start to the Hampshire League season in Division 2B — notching up their third win out of three by beating Lymington seconds in an exciting game across The Solent.
Ryde set a below par 219-8 from their 45 overs — opener Ian Hailes top scoring with 55 and Mark Oatley pitching in with 43 not out.
In reply, Ryde's bowlers did a fine job of containing Lymington's batsmen, to win by just four runs.

After Mark Fletcher and Ben Attrill fell cheaply, Martin Blackman played an outstanding innings, underpinned by 15 boundaries and a six, as the home side set a total of 270-7.
Blackman's momentum was aided by a 120-run stand with Jack Powell, who scored 58.
Ethan Short and Sam Read made early inroads, but Burridge fought back before two crucial wickets saw Ventnor clinch victory by just two runs.

In Division 1 of the Island League, Ventnor thirds (191 all out) beat St Helens (184 all out) by seven runs at The Green, with Souvak Sanyal (73) and Gary Legg (62) contributing to the Ventnor total.
Defending champions Newport (257-8) beat new team Wight Whizzers (180 all out) by 77 runs at Whitecroft, with Gareth Bricknell (58), Tom Dye (52), and Kev Winchcombe (39) among the runs for Newport.
Newport seconds beat Shanklin and Godshill seconds by one wicket, while Ventnor IV beat Arreton by 71 runs.

Tottenham contact Brentford as they look to appoint Thomas Frank as new manager

Tottenham contact Brentford as they look to appoint Thomas Frank as new manager Tottenham Hotspur are close to appointing Brentford's Thomas Frank as their new head coach. According to The Athletic, the Lilywhites have made contact with Brentford for the 51-year-old, and hope to reach an agreement in the next 48 hours. Advertisement Frank is reportedly ready to succeed Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed from his position on Friday after remaining two seasons in charge. The two clubs are said to have a healthy relationship and talks will centre on the cost of releasing the Danish boss as well as the backroom staff, which is expected to be around £10 million. Tottenham endured a disappointing 2024-25 Premier League campaign under Postecoglou, losing 22 of their 38 matches to finish 17th in the table. But the Australian boss secured them Champions League football for next season by leading them to Europa League success, beating Manchester United in the final in Bilbao. Advertisement That suggested that Postecoglou would continue as Spurs' manager, but the club chairman Daniel Levy made the brutal decision to sack him, which reportedly angered many of their players. Now Tottenham appear to be on the verge of signing Frank, who has done an excellent job at Brentford since becoming their head coach in 2018. He led the Bees to Premier League promotion in 2021 after beating Swansea City in the Championship play-off final. The West Londoners have since become an established side in the English top-flight under Frank, securing 13th, ninth, 16th and 10th-placed finishes. He has certainly overperformed at Brentford but doesn't have the experience of managing a top club like Tottenham, who will be playing in Champions League next season. Stats from Transfermarkt

Diallo opens grass-court season with win over Vukic at Libema Open

Canadian tennis player Gabriel Diallo kicked off his grass-court season with a 7-5, 7-6 (2) win over Australia's Aleksandar Vukic on Monday at the Libema Open. The 23-year-old from Montreal had 13 aces and no double faults in the win at the ATP/WTA 250 tournament in s'-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. Diallo had the only break of the match, and crucially it came in the final game of the first set when the Canadian returned to love. He did not have another chance to break in the 92-minute contest. Vukic was not as productive on his chances as Diallo saved all four break points he faced, including two in the 11th game of the second set. Diallo will face another Australian, sixth seed Jordan Thompson, in the second round. In women's doubles action, Canadians Bianca Andreescu and Carson Branstine defeated Russian pair Anastasia Potapova and Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6 (2), 7-5. They will next face the second-seeded team of Hungary's Fanny Stollar and Russia's Irina Khromacheva. Meanwhile, at the WTA 500 Queen's Club Championships in London, England, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., lost her first-round match 7-6 (4), 6-2 to Germany's Tatjana Maria. Maria fired seven aces and converted three breaks on seven chances, compared to one in four chances for Fernandez. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 9, 2025.

Tottenham approach Brentford over appointing Thomas Frank as head coach

Photograph: Nick Potts/PA Tottenham have approached Brentford over appointing Thomas Frank as their new head coach. The Dane is the club's No 1 target to replace Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked on Friday, and there is confidence that a deal will be struck in the next 48 hours. Negotiations are due to take place on the cost of recruiting Frank, who has a £10m release clause, and his backroom staff. The 51-year-old wants to join Spurs after almost seven years at Brentford, with c already in place. Advertisement Spurs have moved swiftly after parting company with Postecoglou, who lost his job despite winning the Europa League and ending the club's 17-year wait for a major trophy last month. The Australian's fate was decided after the chairman, Daniel Levy, looked past the side's European run and focused on a dreadful Premier League campaign. Spurs finished 17th last season after losing 22 games. That has not made the job less attractive to Frank, who will be taking over a team that earned Champions League qualification thanks to their triumph over Manchester United in Bilbao. Frank has established himself as one of the most respected managers in the top flight since leading Brentford to promotion from the Championship in 2021. They have steered clear of relegation battles and finished 10th last season. Frank has operated with a modest budget and has admitted that Brentford cannot hope to hold on to their best players if bigger clubs try to buy them. Bryan Mbeumo is expected to depart for Old Trafford this summer. It remains to be seen how Brentford respond if everything goes smoothly with Spurs and Frank departs. Kieran McKenna has been suggested as a potential replacement for Frank but it is not clear if he wants to leave Ipswich Town.
