European leaders had gathered in Washington a day prior to vouch for Ukraine and plead with Trump to back a motion to offer Kyiv concrete security guarantees in the event of a peace deal with Russia. American commentator and YouTuber Benny Johnson posted the picture on X and wrote: 'The single most powerful image of 2025: President Trump at the Resolute Desk with world leaders crowding around him, just listening. Nothing else comes close.' Zelensky returned to the Oval Office on Monday for the first time since February - the disastrous summit in which he was asked to leave after being challenged by U.S. Vice President JD Vance on his gratitude for continued American support.
This time, the Ukrainian premier insisted upon expressing his thanks several times and deftly navigated the American press with humour before heading for talks with Trump and his European counterparts. Ashok Swain, a Swedish professor of peace and conflict research, said: 'Europe's 'most powerful' leaders sat like obedient pupils as Donald Trump held court in the Oval Office. Does this look Europe to Europeans?' One user said: 'All of them came to support Zelensky and not Trump.' Another said: 'We are watching history being made right in front of our eyes. Look at all the world leaders in the Oval Office with all eyes on Trump.' A third, joking about Trump and the US's authority, said: 'He called them over the weekend and said, 'Be here on Monday.' They all showed up. America is back.'
European leaders have been trying to steer Trump towards a lasting ceasefire palatable to Ukraine and the continent since he took office. It was Italy's Giorgia Meloni who first raised the idea that non-parties to the war could offer Ukraine security guarantees resembling NATO's Article 5 pledge of collective defence, even if Trump is unwilling to welcome Kyiv into the alliance. Trump's administration in recent days appears to have warmed to the idea, though has ruled out putting U.S. boots on the ground as part of a major peacekeeping force.
Ahead of Monday's talks in Washington with Zelensky, which followed Trump's historic summit with Putin in Alaska, Secretary of State Marco Rubio made clear it was inviting European leaders as friends and allies, not as 'backup' against bullying. Zelensky was harangued by Trump and his Vice President during their meeting in February, but Monday's talks appeared to go better. Still, neither the meeting with Putin nor Zelensky has yet yielded definitive progress towards ending the war.
Trump is trying to steer Putin and Zelenskyy toward a settlement more than three years after Russia invaded its neighbor, but there are major obstacles. They include Ukraine's demands for Western-backed military assurances to ensure Russia won't mount another invasion in coming years.
Kyiv's European allies are looking to set up a force that could backstop any peace agreement, and a coalition of 30 countries, including European nations, Japan and Australia, have signed up to support the initiative. The viral photos of European leaders in the White House prompted comparison to a 2018 photo of leaders roused and on their feet around Donald Trump - indicative, some said, of the changing state of international affairs. In that picture, former German Chancellor Merkel, flanked by other world leaders, is seen standing over Trump, who is seated with his arms crossed.
After Monday's meeting, Trump announced that plans were underway for a trilateral meeting involving himself, Zelensky, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, although Moscow's response remained cautious. Zelensky expressed optimism and gratitude, while European leaders reiterated that no serious peace could proceed without Russia halting hostilities. Discussions also touched on a proposed $90 billion weapons package for Ukraine.

US Defense Department to buy cobalt for up to $500 million
Aug 21 (Reuters) - The U.S. is seeking to procure cobalt worth up to $500 million for defense stockpiles amid the country's move to boost its critical mineral supplies. Companies have been scrambling to source rare earths after China imposed restrictions, leading to a 75% drop in rare earth magnet exports from the country in June and causing some auto companies to suspend production. U.S. President Donald Trump in March invoked emergency powers to boost domestic production of critical minerals as part of a broad effort to offset China's near-total control of the sector. In July, Reuters reported that the White House tapped a former mining executive, David Copley, to head an office at the National Security Council focused on strengthening supply chains. According to the tender document published by the U.S. Department of Defense and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) on Wednesday, they are looking for offers for alloy-grade cobalt of about 7,480 tonnes over the next five years. Cobalt, mostly imported by the U.S., is used in batteries, a component in nickel superalloys for high temperature sections of jet engines and industrial gas turbines, among others. However, the defense department was seeking offers from only three companies - units of Vale SA in Canada, Japan's Sumitomo Metal Mining and Norway's Glencore Nikkelverk. The document also said the purchase amount can range from between $2 million and $500 million in the five-year period.

Head for the bunkers — nuclear grade hokum incoming! The heart of British democracy is under attack, not from the Russians, nor Islamist extremists, but from an even bigger bunch of loonies... Netflix. The five-part political drama Hostage sees Suranne Jones playing a Labour prime minister who has to save the NHS (hurrah!) while facing down a neo-Fascist French president (boo!) planning to station Euro-troops in England (boo! hiss!). Meanwhile, there's a boatload of African asylum seekers fleeing persecution who need safe haven in the UK — and, gulp, they've all got ebola. And just when you think the stakes couldn't be any higher, masked gunmen only go and kidnap the PM's lovely husband, Dr Alex (Ashley Thomas). He's in South America with a Medecins Sans Frontieres team, giving vaccinations to happy village children and their poor-but-grateful mums, when terrorists take all the doctors prisoner. They shoot a translator dead. At first this appears to be more proof of what rotten rotters they are, but Dr Alex overhears them talking in English, so perhaps they just realised they wouldn't need a translator. With a gun to his head, Dr Alex is forced to record a video message to his wife. She must resign within 24 hours or one of the hostages will be killed. Suranne Jones, who excels at melodrama, does her best to breathe credibility into all this over-egged nonsense. We're so used to seeing her in extreme situations — wreaking vengeance on an unfaithful husband in Doctor Foster, solving murders aboard a submarine in Vigil — that it doesn't seem too delulu when she takes command of a hostage rescue attempt... and then apologises to the Chief of the Defence Staff for failing to let him know what she was doing. Mind you, it's not much of a rescue. British special forces have apparently been reduced to one soldier, a grizzled veteran called Thomas. And he's armed only with a pistol and a telescopic camera that looks as though he ordered it from one of those sales booklets that fall out of the Sunday supplements. He probably bought a nice pair of orthopaedic sandals and a reversible jacket at the same time. If the PM has any chance of getting her husband back, she's going to have to rely on the French military. But President Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy) has her own problems — she's been having an affair with someone she really shouldn't, and now a blackmailer is threatening to release a video of them in bed together. No wonder Vivienne is so spiteful and mean to her family... though it doesn't explain why, when they're alone, they speak English with 'Allo 'Allo accents. If all that stretches your credulity, consider this. It's only in a fictional drama as bonkers as this that Labour can manage to elect a female leader.

Trump visits police, military in Washington amid crime crackdown
WASHINGTON, Aug 21 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump took his law-and-order message to the streets of the nation's capital on Thursday, visiting a command center to thank law enforcement officers who are carrying out his crime crackdown. Trump last week deployed National Guard soldiers and federal agents to the city. He said he was temporarily taking over the city's police department in an extraordinary assertion of presidential power, citing what he said is a violent crime wave. City officials have rejected the assertion, pointing to federal and city statistics that show violent crime has declined significantly since a spike in 2023. Trump, without citing evidence, told several hundred uniformed personnel gathered at the U.S. Park Police Anacostia Operations Facility that their efforts were leading to a drop in crime.
