Kerala rapper Vedan arrested after ganja seized from flat
The police on Monday (April 28, 2025) arrested Kerala rapper Vedan (Hirandas Murali) after recovering nearly six grams of ganja from his apartment near Vyttila in Kochi.
The narcotic substance was recovered by the personnel from the Hill Palace police station following a tip-off. It is learnt that he had reached the apartment along with eight of his friends after a stage programme on Sunday night (April 17, 2025). Police were questioning the rapper and his friends at the time of filing of this report.
'He will be booked as per the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act after the interrogation is completed,' they said. He may be released on station bail as the quantity in possession was minimal. Police said that further details related to the ganja seizure will be revealed soon.
A native of Thrissur, Vedan's 'Voice of the Voiceless' rap video was a hit online. He had also collaborated with music director Sushin Shyam in the promo song 'Kuthanthram' for the movie 'Manjummel Boys'.

Odisha IAS officer Dhiman Chakma caught accepting ₹10 lakh bribe
Dhiman Chakma, a Sub-Collector of Dharamgarh in Odisha's Kalahandi district, was caught on Monday allegedly accepting a ₹10 lakh bribe from a local businessman, according to the Odisha Vigilance Department. M Radhakrishna, SP (Vigilance), said that Chakma was presented before the special vigilance court in Bhawanipatna, which denied his bail request and sent him to 14 days of judicial custody. Following the arrest, officials conducted searches at Chakma's government residence, where an additional ₹47 lakh in cash was recovered. Investigations are ongoing, the department said in a release. 'During the search, ₹47 lakh in cash was found from his quarters at Dharamgarh. As he could not give any satisfactory explanation regarding such huge cash, the same was seized,' Radhakrishna said. According to the Vigilance Department, Chakma, a 2021-batch IAS officer, allegedly demanded a total bribe of ₹20 lakh and threatened to take action against the businessman's enterprise if payment was not made. The Vigilance Department wrote on X: 'Today, Sri Dhiman Chakma, IAS (2021 batch), Sub-Collector, Dharamgarh, #Kalahandi, has been nabbed while taking a bribe of Rs. 10 Lakh from a businessman, threatening to act against his business otherwise. Further, ₹47 lakh cash was recovered during the search at his government's residence.' It further added: 'The overall bribe demanded was ₹20 lakh, & this was the 1st instalment. In this connection, Vigilance Cell PS Case No. 6 /2025 U/s 7 P. C. Act, 1988 as amended by P. C. (Amd) Act, 2018 has been registered. Investigation continues.' A video shared by the vigilance department showed currency notes recovered from Chakma's residence spread out on a bed as officials continued their search. Chakma called the complainant to his official residence According to a vigilance statement, 2021-batch IAS officer Dhiman Chakma allegedly threatened a local businessman, demanding ₹20 lakh to avoid action against him. The businessman reported the demand to Vigilance authorities, prompting officials to lay a trap on the night of June 8, 2025. 'Based on the complaint, a trap was laid on June 8, 2025, night, wherein accused Dhiman Chakma was nabbed by a team of Odisha Vigilance in his government quarters at Dharamgarh in Kalahandi district,' the statement said. It added that Chakma was caught red-handed accepting ₹10 lakh — the first instalment of the bribe — which was recovered from his possession in the presence of witnesses. The IAS officer was caught "red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹10 lakh from a local businessman," the department said in the release. The accused Sub-Collector called the complainant to his official government residence at Dharamgarh, received the bribe amount, verified the '26 number of 100-note bundles of different denominations with both his hands, and kept the same inside his residence office table drawer.' Both hand wash and table drawer wash 'gave a positive chemical reaction,' the release said. A case has been registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018). More details are awaited as the probe continues. The SP said a case has been registered against IAS officer Dhiman Chakma under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Chakma initially joined the Odisha cadre as a 2019-batch Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer. After completing his training, he served as Additional Chief Conservator at Baripada in Mayurbhanj from June 2021. He later cleared the civil services examination in 2021, was appointed as an IAS officer, and assigned to the Odisha cadre. Have issued norms to monitor use of loan money by builders: RBI to SC
NEW DELHI: As many banks and financial institutions have come under scanner for harassing homebuyers in connivance with real estate companies particularly in case of subvention plan and facing Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe on direction of the Supreme Court, banking regulator RBI has virtually shrugged off its responsibility and told SC that it has over the years issued various guidelines and circulars to monitor use of loan amount by developers to prevent misuse and siphoning of funds. It also said that it had directed banks not to resort to intimidation or harassment of any kind for recovery of loan amounts from buyers. Under the subvention scheme, banks disburse the sanctioned amount directly to the the builders, who then have to pay EMIs on the sanctioned loan amount, until possession of the flats is handed over to homebuyers. As many builders did not complete construction and started defaulting in paying the EMIs to the banks as per the Tripartite Agreement, the banks started action against the buyers to recover the EMIs and it is the SC which came to their rescue by ordering a probe into the alleged 'unholy' nexus of builders and banks. In an affidavit filed in the apex court, RBI referred to various directions and guidelines issued by it from time to time and said, "RBI has performed its duty in discharge of its statutory obligations under the various statutes, including those under the BR (Banking Regulation) Act." The regulator said it had way back in 2015 taken cognisance of the practices such as Subvention Schemes and had issued guidelines as per which disbursal of housing loans sanctioned to individuals should be closely linked to the stages of construction of the housing project and upfront disbursal should not be made in cases of incomplete or under-construction housing projects. In a relief to many homebuyers who booked flats under subvention plan and have not got possession of their flats because of inordinate delay by developers, SC had in July last year directed that no coercive action could be taken against them by banks or builders regarding payment of EMI and no complaint shall be entertained against them for cheque bounce cases. Seeking intervention, hundreds of homebuyers had moved the SC against banks and builders.

FIR against BJP leader, kin of Ex-PM Chandrashekhar's son, for threatening Dalit scholar in UP; audio clip goes viral
Representative photo NEW DELHI: A BJP leader closely associated with former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar's son Neeraj Shekhar has been booked for allegedly threatening a Dalit research scholar from Lucknow University on Monday night at Ubhaon Police Station in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. The FIR was filed based on a complaint by Deepak Kannaujia, a native of Turtipar village and scholar at Lucknow University, who alleged that BJP leader Alok Singh called and threatened him on May 21. According to the complaint, Alok Singh said, "Record this conversation if you want. I am not afraid of the administration or the law and order in Uttar Pradesh." BJP's Bilthara Road area president Arun Kant Tiwari confirmed Alok Singh's affiliation with the party and his close relation to Neeraj Shekhar. Kannaujia claimed there was a longstanding political enmity between his family and Alok Singh. He stated that his father, Kamlesh Kannaujia, died of a heart attack last October due to stress from repeated harassment. The complainant expressed fear for his mother's safety, who lives alone in the village, suggesting Singh might harm her. Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh confirmed that an audio clip related to the incident had recently gone viral on social media. Following a preliminary inquiry conducted by Rasra Circle Officer Alok Gupta, Alok Singh was booked under sections 352 and 351(3) of the BNS for intentional insult and criminal intimidation. Additional charges were filed under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
