New Delhi: The government on Friday said that various schemes to promote food processing have helped reduce post-harvest losses in fruits and vegetables over the last five years while emphasising the need to further develop the sector to boost farmers' income and meet growing food demand. Food Processing Industries Minister Chirag Paswan , speaking at the SUFALAM event organised by NIFTEM-Kundli in Haryana, said the food processing sector has a crucial role in achieving India's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047."So far, we have not been able to tap and explore the sector fully. In terms of exports and processing, we are nowhere at present although there is endless scope to develop further," Paswan said. The minister added that India could emerge as a "global food basket" given the sector's huge potential. The government is working to establish an ecosystem to boost food processing through various schemes and by encouraging startups, though Paswan noted that "it is still not enough as potential is huge."Food Processing Industries Secretary Subrata Gupta said the ministry was "relentlessly pursuing projects" to support the creation of cold chains and other food processing infrastructure to reduce food wastage "In fact, over the last five years, there has been a decline of food wastage because of lack of processing," he said.Gupta highlighted the challenge of feeding a growing global population, expected to increase by 2 billion from the current 8 billion. He noted that 77 per cent of agricultural land is used to grow food for animals, which provides only 18 per cent of calories and 37 per cent of proteins consumed by humans. The secretary emphasised the need for alternative protein sources, mentioning that NIFTEM has been sponsoring research in frontier areas of processing, including cultured meat and plant-based meat technologies.

‘Bihar First, Bihari First'—Chirag Paswan says will contest Bihar polls, backs Nitish for CM

Paswan was talking to reporters at Swami Vivekananda Airport here on his arrival to attend an event of a regional news channel. He also said there is no vacancy for the post of chief minister of the eastern state as incumbent Nitish Kumar will continue to lead post the polls, likely to be held in October-November this year. Raipur : Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president Chirag Paswan on Monday said he will definitely contest the upcoming Bihar polls if his candidature consolidates his party's position and 'strike rate'. When asked about his contesting Bihar assembly elections, Paswan said, 'I have already said that I don't see myself in the politics of the Centre for a longer period. The reason for my entry into politics is Bihar and Biharis (people of Bihar). I have my own vision – Bihar First, Bihari First.' 'In such a situation, I want my state Bihar to stand at par with developed states. After becoming an MP for the third time, I realised that it may not be possible (to work for Bihar) by staying in Delhi,' he asserted, adding that he had told his party that he wished to return to Bihar (politics) soon. Paswan said several parties benefitted when their national leaders have fought state polls. 'The BJP has tried this strategy many times by fielding their MPs in the assembly elections and have got its benefit. If my move to enter the poll fray strengthens my party and consolidates its strike rate (percentage of seats won against seats fought) then I will contest. We had a 100 per cent strike rate in the Lok Sabha elections. I would like my strike rate to be just as good in the Bihar polls,' he said. Asked about the chief ministerial face of the NDA for the Bihar polls, he said, 'There is no vacancy for the post of Bihar CM. Nitish Kumar will be on the post after the polls.' The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is likely to soon call a meeting of its executive members to formalise a proposal urging Paswan to contest the Bihar assembly elections. Chirag may shift to state politics to boost poll prospects: LJP (RV)

Patna: Amid growing speculation that Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan may transition to state politics, the party's Bihar in charge, Arun Bharti, on Friday said they want him to contest the upcoming state assembly elections to improve their electoral prospects. Currently, the LJP (Ram Vilas) has no representation in the Bihar assembly. Its sole MLA, Raj Kumar Singh, elected from the Matihani seat in Begusarai district, subsequently joined the JD(U). Chirag is presently a Union minister in the Narendra Modi govt, heading the ministry of food processing industries. Contesting state elections would mean resigning from the Union cabinet, but the party says his top priority is now "the development of Bihar and Biharis". Interestingly, PM Narendra Modi has already kick-started the NDA's campaign for the assembly elections, visiting Bihar twice within a month, a move seen as a sign of the BJP's determination to win the state. Speaking to TOI on Friday, Arun Bharti, who is also the MP from Jamui, said, "The party's state working committee has sent a formal proposal to Chirag to contest elections from Bihar for the party's better poll prospects." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Emphasising Chirag's commitment to the state's development, Bharti added that he "could go to any extent to achieve that goal". Bharti described Chirag as the "most talented" youth within the NDA and a potential future chief minister. "Among all the promising youths from the NDA who could be given leadership of the state, Chirag Paswan appears to be the strongest contender. However, after Nitish Kumar..." he said, without completing the thought. He, however, refrained from commenting on seat-sharing discussions. During an interaction with mediapersons in Hajipur on Thursday evening, Chirag had said the matter was under active discussion within the party. "The party is debating the issue and also conducting a survey on whether his contesting elections will benefit the party and the ruling alliance," he said. However, political observers said Chirag entering the assembly poll fray could intensify the internal power struggle within the NDA in Bihar. Sources close to the party said it is demanding a respectable share of seats under the seat-sharing agreement, citing its 100% strike rate in the last two Lok Sabha elections and its ability to transfer votes to allies. In the 2020 assembly elections, Chirag fielded LJP candidates against JD(U) nominees in at least 145 constituencies after alliance talks failed. Though the party secured just one seat, it dealt a severe blow to Nitish Kumar's JD(U), pushing it to third place.
