‘Bihar First, Bihari First'—Chirag Paswan says will contest Bihar polls, backs Nitish for CM
Paswan was talking to reporters at Swami Vivekananda Airport here on his arrival to attend an event of a regional news channel.
He also said there is no vacancy for the post of chief minister of the eastern state as incumbent Nitish Kumar will continue to lead post the polls, likely to be held in October-November this year.
Raipur : Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president Chirag Paswan on Monday said he will definitely contest the upcoming Bihar polls if his candidature consolidates his party's position and 'strike rate'.
When asked about his contesting Bihar assembly elections, Paswan said, 'I have already said that I don't see myself in the politics of the Centre for a longer period. The reason for my entry into politics is Bihar and Biharis (people of Bihar). I have my own vision – Bihar First, Bihari First.' 'In such a situation, I want my state Bihar to stand at par with developed states. After becoming an MP for the third time, I realised that it may not be possible (to work for Bihar) by staying in Delhi,' he asserted, adding that he had told his party that he wished to return to Bihar (politics) soon.
Paswan said several parties benefitted when their national leaders have fought state polls.
'The BJP has tried this strategy many times by fielding their MPs in the assembly elections and have got its benefit. If my move to enter the poll fray strengthens my party and consolidates its strike rate (percentage of seats won against seats fought) then I will contest. We had a 100 per cent strike rate in the Lok Sabha elections. I would like my strike rate to be just as good in the Bihar polls,' he said.
Asked about the chief ministerial face of the NDA for the Bihar polls, he said, 'There is no vacancy for the post of Bihar CM. Nitish Kumar will be on the post after the polls.' The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is likely to soon call a meeting of its executive members to formalise a proposal urging Paswan to contest the Bihar assembly elections. PTI TKP BNM

Sensex jumps nearly 600 points as RBI cuts repo rate by 50 bps; realty, bank, auto stocks surge
Interest-rate-sensitive realty index jumped 2.80 per cent, while auto index surged 1.14 per cent and bankex climbed 0.98 per cent. Recovering all the early lost ground, the 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 591.94 points to 82,033.98 in morning trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty climbed 205.2 points to 24,956.10. Mumbai, Jun 6 (PTI) Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty surged on Friday morning trade after the RBI cut repo rate by a higher-than-expected 50 basis points to prop up growth. The RBI on Friday cut repo rate by a higher-than-expected 50 basis points to prop up growth, which has slowed to a four-year low of 6.5 per cent in FY25. Following the rate cut, the key policy rate eased to a three-year low of 5.5 per cent, providing relief to home, auto and corporate loans borrowers. This is the lowest repo rate in three years. After a detailed assessment of the evolving macroeconomic and financial development, as well as the economic outlook, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to reduce the repo rate by 50 basis points, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said. Malhotra, however, retained the GDP forecast for the current fiscal at 6.5 per cent. The inflation projection was lowered to 3.7 per cent from the earlier estimate of 4 per cent, supported by expectations of a good monsoon. From the Sensex firms, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, Maruti, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IndusInd Bank, State Bank of India, Bajaj Finserv and HDFC Bank were among the major gainers. Sun Pharma, Infosys, Nestle and HCL Tech were the laggards. 'A third straight cut in the repo rates this year with 50 bps cut instead of an estimate of 25 bps is a pleasant move. This demonstrates a pro-growth stance and a front-loading of rate cuts given our stable economic growth and declining inflation. A change in policy stance from accommodative to neutral is also justified as it can help to strike a right balance between growth and inflation, especially if geopolitical issues escalate further,' Umeshkumar Mehta, CIO, SAMCO Mutual Fund, said. In Asian markets, South Korea's Kospi and Japan's Nikkei 225 index were trading in the positive territory while Shanghai's SSE Composite index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng quoted marginally lower. US markets ended lower on Thursday. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 208.47 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data. Global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.28 per cent to USD 65.16 a barrel. On Thursday, the 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 443.79 points or 0.55 per cent to settle at 81,442.04. The Nifty rose 130.70 points or 0.53 per cent to 24,750.90. PTI SUM DR This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.

RBI cuts CRR by a steep 1 pc, to unlock Rs 2.5 lakh crore to bank funds by Dec
'The Reserve Bank remains committed to provide sufficient liquidity to the banking system. To further provide durable liquidity, it has been decided to reduce the cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 100 basis points (bps) to 3 per cent of net demand and time liabilities (NDTL) in a staggered manner during the course of the year,' RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said, while announcing the bi-monthly MPC outcome. With the reduction in four equal tranches ending November 29, 2025, the CRR would come down to 3 per cent. This means that the commercial banks would have to maintain a lower level of 3 per cent in liquid cash form with the RBI allowing them to have higher funds for lending. Mumbai, Jun 6 (PTI) Reserve Bank on Friday decided to cut Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by a huge 1 per cent, which will unlock Rs 2.5 lakh crore liquidity to the banking system for lending to productive sectors of the economy. This reduction will be carried out in four equal tranches of 25 bps each with effect from the fortnights beginning September 6, October 4, November 1 and November 29, 2025, he said. 'The cut in CRR would release primary liquidity of about Rs 2.5 lakh crore to the banking system by December 2025. Besides providing durable liquidity, it will reduce the cost of funding of the banks, thereby helping in monetary policy transmission to the credit market,' he said. Higher credit flow will help in boosting economic growth which hit a four-year low of 6.5 per cent in FY'25. 'I would like to reiterate that we will continue to monitor the evolving liquidity and financial market conditions and proactively take further measures, as warranted,' he said. RBI had last slashed CRR by 50 basis points to 4 per cent in the December 2024 MPC announcement. It was done in two equal tranches of 25 basis points, each with effect from the fortnight beginning December 14, 2024 and December 28, 2024. The move led to the unlocking of Rs 1.16 lakh crore to the banking system and easing the liquidity situation. The RBI on May 4, 2022 had raised CRR to 4.5 per cent from 4 per cent in an off-cycle Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, with effect from May 21 the same year. RBI, however, did not tinker with Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) and maintained it at 18 per cent. SLR is a regulatory requirement that requires banks to hold 18 per cent of total deposits or net demand and time liabilities (NDTL) in government securities. This ensures that banks have sufficient liquidity to meet customer withdrawal demands and maintain financial stability. On the liquidity situation, Malhotra said, a total amount of Rs 9.5 lakh crore of durable funds has been injected into the banking system since January. As a result, after remaining in deficit since mid-December, liquidity conditions transitioned to surplus at the end of March. This is also evident from the tepid response to daily Variable Repo Rate (VRR) auctions and high Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) balances – the average daily balance during April-May amounted to Rs 2 lakh crore. Reflecting the improvement in liquidity conditions, the weighted average call rate (WACR) – the operating target of monetary policy – traded at the lower end of the LAF corridor since the last policy, he said. The comfortable liquidity surplus in the banking system has further reinforced transmission of policy repo rate cuts to short term rates, he said. 'However, we are yet to see a perceptible transmission in the credit market segment, though we must keep in mind that it happens with some lag,' he said. HDFC Securities' Senior Analyst of Commodities Saumil Gandhi said the 'price of silver reached a new all-time high in the domestic market. The broader sentiment in the bullion space remains positive, driven by geopolitical tensions and ongoing imbalance in global trade and financial dynamics, Trivedi added. Meanwhile, spot gold in the international markets rose USD 21.58 per ounce, or 0.64 per cent, to USD 3,393.93 per ounce. Also, spot silver went up nearly 4 per cent to trade at USD 35.80 per ounce in the overseas markets. 'Spot silver has surpassed the previous resistance level of USD 35 per ounce and is trading above that mark, reaching a 12-year high,' Gandhi said. According to Abans Financial Services' Chief Executive Officer Chintan Mehta, investors are focused on Friday's US non-farm payroll report for further clues on the Federal Reserve's monetary policy direction. In addition, any new geopolitical developments could add another layer of uncertainty, once again driving investors toward the safe haven of gold, Mehta said.
