Tejashwi seeks support from Opposition and ruling parties over SIR in Bihar

Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday (July 20, 2025) shared letters he had written to 35 leaders seeking their support in the fight against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, alleging large-scale disenfranchisement. The Rashtriya Janata Dal leader has posted the letter on X. Along with Opposition leaders at the national level, Mr. Yadav has also written letters to ruling coalition leaders at the Centre and the State, including Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Lok Janshakti Party (RV) national president Chirag Paswan, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) founder Jitan Ram Manjhi, Telugu Desam Party national president N. Chandrababu Naidu, All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) president Sudhesh Mahto, and Apna Dal (Soneylal) party president Anupriya Patel. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and CPI-(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya were also among those who received the letters. In the letter, Mr. Yadav said that he was writing the letter with a deep sense of anguish and urgency. 'The farce and tragedy of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) going on in Bihar has shaken the very foundation of democracy through large-scale disenfranchisement. It is a clear indication of how the independent institution of the Election Commission is adamant on eroding public trust in the integrity of our electoral process,' Mr. Yadav said in the letter. He further wrote that every person in the country, irrespective of their background or status, is proud of their vote and the ability to participate in the governance of the country is deeply empowering. Expressing apprehension, Mr. Yadav said that lakhs of voters, for no fault of their own, are being disempowered and humiliated. 'According to the EC press note dated July 16, 2025, around 4.5% of the population has already been left out because they were not 'not found at their addresses'. This is in addition to the 4% who 'probably' passed away or have permanently shifted. Going by these numbers, journalists on the ground and political scientists closely observing the exercise put the disenfranchisement figure at a whopping 12% to 15%. This is unprecedented in the history of our country,' Mr. Yadav said. Raising questions on the timing of revision, Mr. Yadav pointed out that even the Supreme Court had hinted at suspicion. He added that the EC had not done itself any favours by announcing and carrying out the exercise in a haphazard and high-handed manner. Mr. Yadav alleged that the poll body has not been transparent and it is making and breaking its own rules on the fly. 'Worse, they are targeting anyone and everyone who demands transparency and accountability,' Mr. Yadav said. The former Deputy Chief Minister said the experience of the Maharashtra Assembly elections are still fresh in the memory, and he was still waiting for a proper response from the EC. 'Now it is Bihar's turn. This needs to be resisted in the strongest terms possible. Because, if we do not raise our voices and register our strong protest, the same will be carried out in other States as well. The Constitution demands that we defend the republic. We should not be found wanting at this historical juncture,' Mr. Yadav said.

Chirag Paswan recalls RJD's rule, blamed Lalu-Rabri for Bihar's backwardness

Ahead of the Assembly election, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) national president and Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Saturday (July 19, 2025) targeted the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) by recalling the day of 90s during this rally at Polo Ground in Munger district of Bihar. Attacking the rule of Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi, the LJP (RV) leader said that their regime put the State in back gear and that's the reason even today, Bihar is rated a backward State. Accompanied by senior leaders of his party and MPs, he pointed out that the State of Bihar is at the bottom in different parameters in terms of development. Mr. Paswan urged the people that time has come that will shape their future for the next five year and can put Bihar on the top rank in the country. 'In the coming few months, Bihar election will be held, which will determine our next five years' future. In the 90s, we wasted so many such five years, due to which Bihar ranks at the bottom in terms of development. But this time, we have the opportunity to build a Bihar that is counted not only in the country but among the developed states of the entire world. Where Bihar, along with every Bihari, is first,'Mr. Paswan said while addressing the Nav Sankalp ((New Resolution)) Mahasabha. Attacking the Opposition parties, Hajipur MP said that the path towards the development of the State is not easy and plenty of obstacles will come. 'As the election approaches, leaders of RJD, Congress, and all opposition parties will come to present their views. Then you should ask them when their coalition had a long opportunity, why they did not make Bihar a developed state. In the 90s, a deep divide was created, which forced Biharis to migrate to other states and countries,' Mr. Paswan said. Criticising the earlier government, he added when he visits the other State and country, he sees the pain in the eyes of the people of Bihar who have migrated from their own state leaving the families back home to earn their livelihood. He also said that many even have settled there. He promised that he will not allow youths to go outside the State in search of employment and education. He pledged to create such opportunities in Bihar itself. 'The Opposition parties in Bihar do not want any Bihari to become educated. They do not want better employment opportunities to be established in Bihar. Because they know that the day Bihar's youth become educated and start asking questions, like Chirag Paswan does, their politics of caste and religion will come to an end,' Mr. Paswan said. Mr. Paswan claimed that many political parties are afraid of him and they cannot tolerate him and his campaign of Bihar First Bihari First. Without naming anyone, the Union Minister alleged that there are people who want to end his political career. 'Those who want to keep my Bihar backward, I stand tall and firm before them. I too will see how my Bihar does not progress, how my Bihar does not become number one. I am not afraid of anyone because I am the son of lion Ram Vilas Paswan who has never bowed down in front of anyone,' Mr. Paswan said.

Chirag Paswan's explosive claim at Bihar rally: ‘Conspiracy to blow me up with a bomb'

Bihar: Union Minster Chirag Paswan, on Saturday, claimed that his detractors have allegedly hatched a "conspiracy" to blow him up 'with a bomb'. Paswan's explosive claim comes a week after a Lok Janshakti Party leader said that Chirag had received a death threat via social media. The party chief made the comments while addressing a rally in Bihar's Munger, where assembly polls are due later this year. The Lok Janshakti Party president also hurled several barbs at his estranged uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras, and Lalu Prasad's RJD with which the latter has aligned, without mentioning by name any of his opponents, reported PTI. The 43-year-old leader, who has lately been referring to himself in third person when addressing public meetings, said his detractors have always 'tried to stop Chirag Paswan.' "There have always been attempts by Chirag Paswan's detractors to stop him. They split his party and, later, got him dragged out of his house, leaving him to fend for himself on the streets. But nothing could break Chirag Paswan", said the leader. Paswan, who found himself sidelined in the Lok Janshakti Party founded by his late father Ram Vilas Paswan after a split led by his uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras, recalled his time in political isolation. He spoke of the difficult phase spent in the wilderness before being brought back into the fold by the BJP, which offered him an alliance ahead of last year's Lok Sabha elections. "Many people are upset with Chirag Paswan's 'Bihar First, Bihari First' slogan, which strikes at the roots of their caste politics. Such people had caused the state to sink in poverty and backwardness while in power and now, ahead of the Assembly polls, they are trying to rob people off with false promises", said the Hajipur MP, reported PTI. Leaders from the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), responding to the striking claim made by Paswan, said that Chirag might have referred to the recent FIR lodged regarding a threat to the MP. 'It may have been a reference to the FIR lodged recently against a social media troll. Chirag ji may have made use of it for rhetoric,' news wire PTI quoted a LJP leader as saying. As per the LJP leader, Paswan was referring to a police complaint lodged at cyber police station in Patna, by the party's chief spokesman Rajesh Kumar Bhatt, against an Instagram user who had threatened to blow up Paswan.
