AFL great forced to apologise to premiership-winning coach after embarrassing insult live on air
Dale Thomas has issued an on-air apology to Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan after making an awkward comment during Channel 7's coverage of the Dreamtime at the G clash.
The former AFL star labelled Fagan 'old' in a light-hearted discussion about potential coaching candidates for Tasmania 's new AFL team.
Fagan, 63, led the Lions to a long-awaited premiership in 2024 and has taken the club to back-to-back grand finals.
His name was floated as part of a coaching wishlist alongside Nathan Buckley, Chris Scott, Ken Hinkley, John Longmire and Adam Simpson.
During post-match analysis, Thomas questioned what role Fagan might play if he joined Tasmania's AFL project.
'Would that be a coach or more of a mentoring overview from Chris Fagan who, with no disrespect, is getting old,' Thomas said.
The remark drew a laugh from co-host Matthew Richardson, a proud Tasmanian and former Richmond great.
But moments later, Richardson's phone lit up with a message from none other than Fagan himself.
Realising the situation, Thomas quickly addressed the audience. 'I did just reference that maybe Chris Fagan - I did say 'with no disrespect' - was old,' he said.
'I just saw Richo's phone go ping, and the name that popped up was Chris Fagan. Do I need to order an official apology?'
Richardson grinned and urged him to do just that. 'He's not old, Fages,' he said.
Thomas responded with a red-faced retraction. 'Look ... I probably didn't ... Chris, I'm tremendously sorry,' he said.
'I love everything you're doing and if you do want to come to Tassie, I'll be there with you. I think you'd be a perfect candidate.'
Richardson chimed in again. 'Oh, you want a job down there as well?' he joked.
The moment came amid renewed focus on Tasmania's bid to enter the AFL, with Tasmania Devils CEO Brendon Gale addressing the state's hopes at a Melbourne breakfast.
Gale stressed that if a stadium at Macquarie Point wasn't approved, the entire bid could collapse.
'It's that black and white,' Gale said.
Richardson added: 'If this doesn't get up, it'll be Tasmania's biggest mistake in 20–30 years.'
Meanwhile, Chris Fagan's credentials speak for themselves. Born in Queenstown, Tasmania, he played more than 260 senior games before moving into AFL coaching.
He spent almost a decade as an assistant coach at Melbourne and then Hawthorn, playing a key role in the Hawks' premiership dynasty. In 2017, he took over as senior coach of Brisbane.
After transforming the struggling Lions into title contenders, Fagan capped his efforts with a grand final win in 2024.
He became the oldest coach to win an AFL premiership - and the first to do so without playing at the elite level.
Thomas, affectionately known as 'Daisy', enjoyed a decorated career at Collingwood and Carlton, winning a flag with the Magpies in 2010 before retiring in 2019.
He has since made a name for himself in media, hosting TV shows, appearing on reality programs, and staying involved in community footy.

The Celtics replaced Udoka with interim coach Joe Mazzulla, who won a title in Boston last season before being upset by the Knicks in the second round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs. Wright has been mentioned by a number of basketball insiders, due to his connections with Knicks stars Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart, all of whom played for Wright at Villanova. These days Wright works as a college basketball analyst at CBS alongside Seth Davis, who appeared to shoot down Wright's candidacy on Tuesday. 'I have been working with Jay Wright on TV for three years,' Davis wrote on X. 'Based on every conversation we have had I would say there is a greater chance that I will be the next Knicks coach than him. The difference is if they call me I will say yes.' Although many expect the Knicks to inquire about Connecticut head coach and two-time national champion Dan Hurley, a more realistic option may be Bryant, who worked under NBA Coach of the Year Kenny Atkinson in Cleveland this season. This season the Knicks reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000, but were ultimately upset by the Pacers in six games. Footy star Thomas Baulch, who is also the CEO of fitness company Prime Train, has opened up on the lifestyle changes he has made which have helped him improve his health, wellbeing and foster new friendships. Baulch is well known among footy circles for his Instagram account where he helps others get in the shape of their life. The fitness trainer, who has over 45,000 followers on his personal Instagram account, is also a well-established footballer, having played in the WAFL for East Perth, NEAFL and the VFL for Aspley and Port Melbourne. The footy player, who is often dubbed 'PrimeTrain' himself, regularly publishes clips of himself playing footy on social media, battling with opponents while kicking goals. As part of his fitness business, Baulch, a midfielder, has also had clients including Brownlow Medallists Patrick Cripps and Tom Mitchell. In recent weeks, the 21-year-old appears to have been enjoying a getaway in Bali with several friends. The Queenslander, who was born in Gladstone, shared a picture of himself enjoying a meal with two friends and fellow fitness coaches, Keenan Chapman and Ned Wagner. McConnochie and Van Velze join Bath coaching staff
Bath have confirmed Ruaridh McConnochie and Gerrit-Jan van Velze will join a new-look backroom staff from the beginning of next McConnochie, 33, last week announced his retirement from professional rugby at the end of this season having made 97 appearances for the club so has been appointed as Bath's new skills coach, which the club describe as a part-time role that aims to "support injured players on their return-to-play programmes, as well as back-three players across the pathway".He said: "I'm delighted to be staying on at Bath Rugby in a coaching capacity. "I've always loved the game and to be able to use my experiences to hopefully improve players coming through the club is something I couldn't say no to." Van Velze, 37, has been appointed to a new consultancy role of player innovation and performance futures, which will involve him working with players on an individual level to "accelerate their personal growth."The former Northampton Saints and Worcester Warriors forward retired from playing at the end of last season."I'm proud to continue the journey with Bath Rugby," he told the club website., external"It's an exciting place to be right now, and I'm looking forward to seeing how far we can push this."Bath confirmed that former England and Scotland coach Andy Robinson, the club's head of academy coaching, and scrum coach Stevie Scott have extended their deals, keeping them at the club next season.
