Vancouver Giants add coach search to GM one, as Manny Viveiros leaves team
The Vancouver Giants are now looking for both a coach and a general manager.
Article content
The Giants announced Monday morning that Manny Viveiros won't be back for a third season with the WHL club because he's landed a job in professional hockey.
Article content
Viveiros, 59, was under contract with Vancouver for this coming campaign but he had an out clause if he was hired by a pro team. There's no official word where he's headed, but there have been reports connecting him to Red Bull Salzburg, an Austrian team. Viveiros has coached in Europe previously.

The Giants and general manager Barclay Parneta, 54, parted ways on April 30. Parneta had been in the post since 2018-19 and his contract had run out at the end of this past season.
Article content
Owner Ron Toigo isn't ruling out the idea of combining the jobs. That might put the Giants in the mix for higher-end coaches wanting control of hockey operations.

Appears the @WHLGiants, who recently parted ways with GM Barclay Parneta, will be on the hunt for a coach now, too. (Google translate for below: Manny Viveiros is rumored to take over the position of head coach at ice hockey champion Red Bull Salzburg.) https://t.co/NZdMrkmzBE

The Giants aren't alone in the WHL in looking for hockey operation staff. The Kelowna Rockets are among the teams looking for a head coach. Kelowna is hosting the Memorial Cup national championship next spring, so should attract some bigger-name bench bosses.

Viveiros had been the coach/director of player personnel for two seasons in the WHL with the Swift Current Broncos but it was the trio of vice-president of operations/assistant general manager Peter Toigo, director of player personnel Greg Batters and head scout Terry Bonner who led the way for the Giants with both the WHL draft and Penticton Vees expansion draft, which both took place after Parneta departed.
Article content
The Giants finished in sixth spot in the Western Conference in both seasons with Viveiros as coach, and were a combined 66-58-12-0 in that time. They lost in the first round of the playoffs both times as well.

The team has won just a single playoff round in the past four campaigns. They did go to the WHL final in 2019, which was Parneta's first year. There were no playoffs the next two seasons because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Viveiros was quoted in a Giants statement on Monday as saying: 'First off, I'd like to thank Ron Toigo and the ownership group of the Giants for the tremendous opportunity I've had. I'd also like to thank the hockey operations staff I worked with on a daily basis. More importantly, I would like to thank the players, and wish them continued success in their young careers.'

Soo Greyhounds will not bid on 2027 Memorial Cup
Article content The Soo Greyhounds decided the third time was, in fact, not the charm. Article content After unsuccessful bids in 2021 and 2024, the team announced Monday morning that it will not bid to host the 2027 Memorial Cup, the Canadian Hockey League's marquee tournament. The event is slated to be hosted by an OHL team, as part of the CHL's regular rotation with the WHL and QMJHL. Article content 'This decision was made following a review of the factors necessary to stage an event of this magnitude, including the resources required, the current state of the local economy in an environment of tariff uncertainty, and the competitive landscape among other potential communities looking to host this event,' reads a statement from team president Tim Lukenda. Article content The Greyhounds previously bid for the 2021 and 2024 tournaments. The first was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the second went to the Saginaw Spirit, who hosted in 2024. Article content Article content Hosting the Memorial Cup requires a significant financial commitment. City council previously approved $300,000 in funding to support the 2024 bid, drawn from the Community Development Fund–Economic Development Stream, designed to spur local economic activity. A similar investment would've been needed to support a 2027 proposal. Article content Competition for the event will also be steep. The Kitchener Rangers, Niagara IceDogs, and Guelph Storm have all expressed interest. Kitchener in particular is seen as a frontrunner, boasting a larger, 7,200-seat arena and more hotel capacity in the surrounding region. The Rangers last hosted in 2008, drawing more than 53,000 fans and generating a $1.95 million profit — the most lucrative Memorial Cup in CHL history. Article content Article content Guelph hosted its only Memorial Cup in 2002, while the IceDogs have never held the tournament at the decade-old Meridian Centre in St. Catharines. Article content 'Competing to host the Memorial Cup would require significant financial and logistical commitments, and our responsibility is to ensure that any bid we submit is both achievable and competitive against larger markets that may currently have greater capability and capacity to meet the event's extensive requirements,' Lukenda's statement reads. Article content The Hounds have hosted the tournament once, in 1993, when they captured their lone CHL championship at the old Sault Memorial Gardens. Before its 2021 cancellation, the tournament was set to be held either in the Sault or Oshawa.
