Bayern Munich beat Man United to win maiden women's W7F title

CNA23-05-2025

Bayern Munich came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Manchester United and claim the inaugural women's World Sevens Football (W7F) title in Estoril, Portugal on Friday.
Matches in the $5 million prize-pool tournament consisted of two 15-minute halves on half-sized pitches, with golden goals in extra time for tiebreakers.
Simi Awujo gave United the lead in the 14th minute with a brilliant shot into the top corner, her third goal of the tournament.
Bayern equalised in the second half when Momoko Tanikawa scored with a left-foot strike, and Sarah Zadrazil clinched the victory four minutes from time with a powerful shot.
"It was such an important goal. So I just ran to the teammates that couldn't play because we are all one big family and it was also for them that we are champions now," Zadrazil said.
The tournament, featuring elite European clubs including Manchester City, Paris St Germain, AS Roma, Sweden's FC Rosengard, Ajax Amsterdam and Benfica, culminated in a final-day showcase including two semi-finals, with PSG beating City 3-1 to take third place.
The event launched two social initiatives - 'Community Champions', awarding $10,000 grants to three local non-profit organisations, and 'Rising 7's', aimed at countering the trend of girls dropping out of sports during adolescence.

Bruno Fernandes confirms he rejected Saudi move to stay at Man United

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has decided to stay at Old Trafford and reject a move to Saudi Arabia. PHOTO: REUTERS LONDON – Bruno Fernandes confirmed on June 3 he rejected a huge offer from Saudi Arabia to stay at Manchester United, saying he wanted to 'continue to play at the highest level'. Speaking at a Portugal camp before their Nations League semi-final against Germany in Munich, he revealed he received an 'exciting offer' from Al Hilal but wanted to be part of Ruben Amorim's rebuild at Old Trafford. Reports said Al Hilal were willing to pay United up to £100 million (S$174 million) for the 30-year-old. 'The president of Al Hilal called me and asked me if I wanted to move there,' Fernandes said. 'I talked to the gaffer (Amorim) and he asked me not to go. Man United said they didn't want to sell me. They said if I wanted to go I could but they didn't need the money.' The midfielder also said a transfer would have been 'easy' with several Portuguese players already in Saudi Arabia, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves, but added: 'I want to play at the highest possible level. 'I want to play major competitions. I know I still can and I want to be happy doing the thing I love the most. This is how I see football and I'm passionate about football and this is the decision I've made.' United endured their worst finish of the Premier League era, finishing 15th. They also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. Fernandes, who is United's captain, was one of the few players to emerge with credit from a disastrous season, scoring 19 goals and making 19 assists across all competitions. Former United skipper Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, said the development was 'significant'. 'United getting that level of money, for someone of Bruno's age, obviously, you couldn't say that it would have been a bad deal,' he said. 'But, on the other hand, Manchester United's star player – only player at times – for the last four, five, six years, has been Bruno Fernandes. He's so important. 'To turn that money down (Fernandes was expected to earn a huge salary as well) at a point where Manchester United are at their lowest ebb and say, 'No, I want to fight through this, I want to come out and achieve things', I think it says a lot about him as a person, as a character.' United are expected to be busy in the transfer market as Amorim reshapes his under-performing squad. The club have already signed Brazil forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are being heavily linked with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. Departures could include Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

England midfielder Kirby announces international retirement before Euros

England women's midfielder Fran Kirby, who earned 77 caps for the Lionesses, announced her retirement from international football on Tuesday, a month before the European Championship. Best known for her role in England's historic Euro 2022 triumph, the 31-year-old started all six games in the tournament, scoring twice and registering three assists. "After being in the England team since the age of 21, it's time to close that chapter of my life. I never wanted this day to come, but I cannot tell you how proud I am that it happened," Kirby said in a statement on social media. "Representing my country has been the greatest honour and a dream come true from my younger years," she added. Kirby joined the national team at the age of 21 and her last appearance came as a second-half substitute in last week's 6-0 win over Portugal. She was not included in the squad for Tuesday's 2-1 loss against Spain. Having struggled with injury and illness throughout her career, she missed the 2023 Women's World Cup due to a knee injury that required surgery. "My journey has been full of ups and downs, setbacks and achievements. Enough has been said and written about those, but regardless of whatever was thrown at me, I want you all to know that every time I put on that England badge, I gave it my all," Kirby added. Former Chelsea player Kirby won seven Women's Super League titles and five FA Cup trophies during her time at the London club. This season, she scored seven goals in 17 appearances for Brighton, who finished fifth.

Alcaraz was way too fast for me today, says Paul after French Open exit

PARIS :Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz played too fast and too aggressively for American Tommy Paul on Tuesday as the defending champion raced through their French Open quarter-final in straight sets and 94 minutes. Paul was mauled by the Spaniard in an eye-popping near-flawless 6-0 6-1 6-4 performance with Alcaraz firing 40 winners in the process. "Not particularly fun," Paul told reporters. "He played some great tennis, returned very well, had me on my backfoot all the time, playing so fast. "Even on the changeovers he was getting up so fast with 20 seconds left. I thought I have got to slow down. He played some amazing tennis. "He was on offence and that was not what I needed tonight. I did the best I could." The world number 12, who had spent close to 11 hours on court in his previous rounds, said he had tried to slow the match down in an effort to shake his opponent out of his rhythm. "Just waiting for the chair umpire to say 'time'," Paul said. "I felt like I was sitting down and there were 20 seconds left and Carlos was already up." The American put up somewhat of a fight in the third set but had trouble with a nagging abdominal muscle injury and was also feeling pain in his adductors. "I felt better today. I want to win the match but pretty early on it was pretty obvious I was not moving amazing," Paul said. "Everyone bought tickets for the night session so I thought I try my best. Obviously I did not want it to go like that." Paul said he was still planning to defend his title at Queen's in London later this month ahead of Wimbledon after a check on the injuries. "That's the plan. It's my ab(dominal) and the adductors. A couple of things. We are going to figure that out in the next couple of days," he said.
